the sugar in yogurt

Quote  |  Reply

so i've been trying to cut down on my sugar intake (i can eat upwards of 150 g per day on a weight gain diet) and am confused about the sugar in yogurt that's not plain. is this sugar natural sugar from dairy or is most of it added? if so, should i avoid eating flavored yogurt and get the plain kind but flavor it myself?

also, does anyone have suggestions for snacks that don't contain a lot of sugar?

thanks!

yes, just avoid eating.

EDIT-most foods have additives, its very hard to live a life eating foods that are raw or dont or whatever was my point.  no foods are "bad" and as long as its not poisonous or your allergic, everything in moderaion, sugar, whatever.

the sugar in the yogurt is  mostly added.  you can try those diet yogurts sweetened with sweetners but personally i don't like to touch those at all.  sometimes i make a smootie with yogurt, juice/water and fruit... of buy plain yogurt and sweeten with a bit of honey or maple syrup... that way, you can control how much sugar you are getting... otherwise, just sweeten with fruit, musli etc.

hope that helps... i've given myself some good ideas now too :-)

If it says sugar, or high fructose corn syrup on the label, sugar has been added.  I like to eat plain yogurt and mash up a banana and mix it together.  Sometimes I will even throw in some nuts like raw cashew pieces or sunflower seeds.  It's very tasty!

I use plain yogurt & flavor it myself. I use Nustevia (the only nonbitter I've tried), splenda, davinci's syrups or sugar free jam or sugar free fruit cups to sweeten it. I've been on a stevia, lemon extract cinnamon hook lately. So delicious!

I used to always eat the Danon Light & Fit yogurts and occasionally the Bryer's & Yoplait light one's as well....they are all low in sugar and therefore low in cals. However, I have recently cut out all artificial sweentners from my diet, so they obviosuly had to go and I still needed my yogurt fix...so I now am eating the Stonyfield low-fat organic yogurts. They are much higher in sugar and calories (they start at 120 compared to the 80-110 range for the atificially sweetened brands), but definately are more like "real" yogurt (not watery like danon light and fit) and don't have that junk in them like the others....I don't eat a lot of sugar anyway so the amount in there doesn't hurt me at all, and actually helps me to make sure I get some sugar into my diet which I struggle with...I highly recommend them as well as the yogurts by Silk....they are all excellent

I manage my triglycerides by keeping sugard/serving around 8 gms or less. For yogurts I eat Oikos plain greek yogurt (add my own Cinnamon and sweetener) and, Kroger's Carb Master Vanilla & Peach.

fage non fat greek yogurt doesn't have any added sugar. You should give it a try and it is high in protein. Good luck.

Oh, I second the suggestion to try Fage non-fat greek yogurt, or Chobani non-fat greek - great texture, low sugar (9 grams per 8 ounces - none of it added) and creamy. I add different things to mine, like the posters above suggested, too.

Bear Naked granola makes a line called "Fit" (it's linked to the left there) that is a great add-in to the plain yogurt - no added oil and very low sugar. And I second the note to add in sunflower seeds, dried fruit, maple syrup or honey. Yum!

For my other snacks, I tend to have veggies with hummus or cheese with fruit or peanut butter (natural.) I can't think of any other low/no sugar snacks at the moment...
