i am SO fed up of the unessisary animal products pilled into foods, what happened to keeping it simple instead of making a list of foods we cant eat we should be makin lists of foods we can! its ridiculous!

i just want some healthy vegetarian (tasty) snacks or meals, that i can enjoy! any ideas?

Basically I just keep it simple and make my own snacks. veggies, bread, fruit and the like. Then sometimes mix it up with some soy or whatever. It seems now-a-days if it doesnt say "vegetarien" across the label, it probably isnt =S theres animal products hiding in everything!!

yer, thanks.from now on its veggie label only! :)
fruit!!!! SO EASY TO GET and to take with you on the go!

Nuts

Some protein bars (careful with these)

Carrots and other small portable veggies

High fiber/high protein cereal
Best bet is to prepare your own food instead of relying on some factory to churn out vegetarian options.  Falafel is really tasty and you can carry it around for a couple of hours without it going bad.  Yogurt is good if you're lacto-ovo, but you also have to watch for gelatin if that's a problem for you.  Dried fruit and/or homemade trail mix is good.
Squares of cheddar and swiss are great for your calcium - you can get reduced fat varieties of both (sorry, vegans!). I love eating a handful of raisins mixed with walnuts - such a great combination. I also cut up slices of cucumber and put a drop of spiracha sauce (spicy asian red stuff) on each slice - it's cool and hot at the same time. I also really like snacking on chunks of the white wave tofu that has been marinated in a dressing - you can find them in the refridgerated section of health stores. Yummy.
a word to the wise about cheese...

i'm an ethical ovo-lacto vegetarian (meaning that i consume eggs and dairy that come ONLY from cruelty-free sources), and was horrified to find out that any number of cheese manufacturers use animal rennet (an enzyme taken from slaugtered calf's stomach lining - ewwww!!) in the production of their cheese products, and most companies don't tell you whether or not the rennet used is animal, vegetable or microbial.

HOWEVER!!!!

there is a God/Goddess/Other Being, becuase someone came up with this: http://cheese.joyousliving.com/Default.aspx

and now i can go to the store and cheese it up to my heart's content!!
Great link!  Thanks!

i love a tofu snack ($2.69 at Canada Safeway) called Mambo Italiano (under the brand name Pete's).  Its somewhat spicy and comes with a small packet of tangy tomato sauce and four large pieces of tofu prepared with red bell peppers, onions and garlic.  It makes for a very nice lunch (300 calories if you eat the whole tasty thing).  With a bowl of saskatoons and a cup of tea - its great.

For something to grab and eat - can't beat nature - fruit is delicious, and nuts (12 almonds for example) - make snacking simple.

Thanks for the post.

I suggest that you get some raw unsalted nuts.  But careful there's only like 5 to a serving, even though you wanna eat em all.

They may take getting use to if you are used to dry salty nuts.

Raw peanuts in soy yogurt mmm.  Calcium and bacteria that you need.

I like to make a vege dip with Mrs. Dash and Grapeseed Oil Veganaise, a sort of crudite, and eat it with any raw veges.  Baby carrot packs are easiest but you can buy precut celery too.

Celery with natural peanut butter.

Celery with hummus.  You can make hummus your self really easy too and make different flavors that you like.

I think some vegetarians tend to fixate themselves too much on cheese. I wouldn't only count on cheese alone for snacking 100% being that it also causes constipation.

How about grapes? olives? walnuts? a luna bar!
I like to snack on dry granola. I find that with nuts and dried fruit alone I can't stop myself, the granola sort of slows down the pace.
Roasted Chickpeas!  They come out like nuts.

Drain a can of chickpeas and pat dry with paper towels.  Toss with just a little olive oil and some seasoning such as salt and pepper or a spice mixture.

Spread them out on a baking sheet in a single layer and roast at 400 f for 20 or 30 minutes.  Stir them around and roast for another 10 or 20 minutes until golden and crunchy.

Cool and munch away!

Oh my....

I didn't know that rennet came from a calf's stomach. I thought it came from the MOTHER, when they're milking her that rennet was just in the milk produced, I had no idea that a calf was even involved, that's awful.

There goes cheese for me now, that puts me one step closer to becoming vegan.

Many cheeses that you can get in the average supermarket will say uses vegetable rennet, or no animal rennet used.  I always seek these out.  I am also a vegetarian for ethical reasons and have been for over 20 years.

luna bar!  always the best snack.  also pretzels, chips, and all those horrible good-tasting carbs are usually vegetarian/vegan (just gotta scan ingredients).  I love dried fruits too, and fruits in general - granny smith apples and apple bananas.

if you have a health food store nearby, check out their bulk section.  health food stores here (in Hawai'i) have massive bulk sections with everything from nutritional yeast to pretzels and dried mangoes (oh my god good).

omg thank you so much for that link above! i had NO IDEA that there was actually stomache lining from a slaughtered cow used to make cheese... i'm aware of the other issues with cheese... but.... wow.  i LOVE cheese, but i'll definately be making some changes in what types/brands i eat now.

Dips are a good snack, bean dips mostly. I just had an apple with chickpea-hazelnut dip spread on it, and have a container of assorted raw veggies (peppers, bok choy, steamed snap peas) and edamame dip for later. And a dish of eggplant-red pepper dip with garbanzo flour flatbread for even later... and at home have some caramelized white onion-rosemary-white bean dip that I'll probably have with some endive for dipping tonight. (I made a ton of dips to eat during the super bowl and am still munching leftovers)
