suggestions needed for TTOM cramping

Quote  |  Reply

I have horrible cramping and lots of pain when TTom rolls around. Anybody have any suggestions to help relieve this. Right now I can't even sit still I'm cramping so bad.

Raspberry tea is a traditional herbal remedy for cramping.
Aleve is my friend

Cal-Mag.... calcium/magnesium preferrably with zinc.

Look at health food stores, I found some once for my daughter that was in powder form.  Simply add the dose to a glass of juice or tea... all happy.  I should say it worked incredibly well for her, she was a BEAR to have around during TTOM.  It even seemed to calm her grumpies.

I took Cal-Mag pills when I was a teen with the same problem, worked wonders.  According to some research I read once, the reason we get cramps is because of calcium loss, and the Cal-mag offsets it.  Whether thats true, I dunno... all I know is... it worked.

water.  lots and lots of it.  most cramping can be relieved by good hydration.

Thanks I'll try some of these.     I am on a muscle relaxer and it is still very painful. Really want some relief.

Doing Aleve and water right now. The other I have to get.

I also get bad cramps at TTOM (today, in fact!).  I second the water, and I find ibuprophen is the only thing that works for me, including prescription meds.

Maybe it's the change of scenery or distraction factor, but I find that if I can get started, a little exercise is helpful.  There's no way I can go full out, though, on a bad day.

I get really bad cramps too--sometimes they're so bad that they're completely debilitating. Sometimes I'm in so much pain that I vomit! I find, although I usually can't bring myself to move at all on that first bad day, that if I am exercising regularly *before* the TOTM, that my cramps are less intense.

I used to down ibuprofen like candy during those first couple of days, but now I have stomach/intestinal problems and I can't. (Note: Make sure to eat food at the same time as taking ibuprofen, or you'll ruin your stomach lining!) I find that heat helps a lot--either a hot shower/bath, or a hot pad or something. I actually have a bag of rice that I heat in the microwave and apply down there. (You can cut off the end of a pantyhose leg, fill it with rice, and tie it off to make one.)

Another thing, which might sound weird, is to try to consciously relax all the muscles in your body. Try to mentally "accept" the pain, instead of fighting it, and relax, and it is much easier to deal with. Sounds weird, I know, but I've found that it works.

Good luck! We all sympathize with your plight!

Anti-diarrhea medicine...

I know that sounds strange, but I also have terrible cramping (the kind where you can't sleep, eat, move, or do anything at all!) and this is the ONLY thing that helps me personally.  My recommendation is to only take 1/2-1 tablet--otherwise it can lead to constipation, which is almost as bad as TTOM.  :)
