It's summertime and it's hard to get outside and exert yourself when the heat's high. Anyone have any suggestions for exercising despite the heat, aside from the traditional working out in a gym?
We wait all year for this weather - rain about 3/4 of the year. Go for a strenous hike - like Dog Mountain, Eagle Creek...
There are kayaks to rent on the Williamette River and you can take rowing lessons down at Station L.
Bicycling along the river or if you are in for more then do Skyline all the way out!!
My favorite is the cooling air of Forest Park and I run there. Althought last evening it was even hot for me.
Hey there, I live in outer SE Portland and yeah, it's been getting hot lately so I've been avoiding exerting myself out in the sun. I use the treadmill in my garage but that gets old fast so, in the past, I've hit the springwater corridor on my bike and headed out to gresham or inner SE.
Probably my best suggestion for something indoor to do is rock climbing. I use to belong to Portland Rock Gym but that can get pretty spendy between renting gear and paying to get in. When my membership ended I looked into cheaper locations and found that Mt Hood Community College has a wall up by their pool for a whole lot less. Monday - Friday, 3pm to 8pm and Saturday noon to 4pm they accept drop in climbers and their is always a trained attendant there to give you tips and instruction. It's $6.00 daily plus $5.00 to rent gear or a 10 climb pass including gear for $67.50. Don't forget that you've gotta bring a friend as an anchor. You can call the aquatic centerwhere the wall is at (503) 491-7243
We have been going camping. We may eat a little more but we exercise a lot. Hiking on the tree covered trails, walk the park in the evening, swimming, tennis, basketball etc. Getting away on the weekends has not only been relaxing but it has the whole family moving. If you don't like camping you can go to one of the many nearby WA or OR state parks that have trails to hike. Most are heavily forested so you are in the shade (really nice in the later afternoons/evenings). Just take a friend.
