Erm, this is probably silly sounding.. but like.. what is it? What does it taste like? Does it have some kind of spice on it or something? It's not like banana chips in that it SOUNDS and LOOKS healthy, but is actually deep fried and sugared, right?

Also, has anyone tried rice wraps as an alternative to tortilla wraps? Any good? =P

i personally wouldn't consider sundried tomatoes that healthy.  they are pretty much slices of tomatoes that have been seasoned and then roasted in the oven (so they turn kinda raisin looking) then they are packed into an air tight jar filled to the brim with olive oil until served.  they are one of my favourite things in the world because they pack so much flavour... unfortunately they also pack a wallop of calories too, so i try and avoid them.

(they're soo good on pizza!)

In my experience, they're very sweet chewy things.  Good though.

I think traditionally they're packed in oil, but recently I've seen them at one of the local grocery stores in a sealed bag (sort of like the bags of tuna they're selling now).  That variety isn't packed in oil, and doesn't have near the normal amount of fat and calories.  They were with the fresh vegetables, near the bottled fresh garlic.

I don't buy the oil packed ones. I only get the dried ones in bags in the produce section.  I just rehydrate them with boiling water.  (They're not really edible without rehydrating - too tough).  They have a lot stronger flavor than fresh tomatoes, and they're handy in the winter when the fresh tomatoes have no flavor.  The oil packed ones are seasoned sometimes, but the bagged ones aren't.  This time of year, there really isn't much need for them, though.

They are actually quite healthy.  However, they are typically very high in sodium and have much more sugar than one would imagine.

I get the dry packed ones in sealed bags, and I think they're quite tasty to dice up and throw on a sandwich, tuna salad, or regular lettuce salad.  Also goes great in a sauce when you're poaching chicken or fish - they soak up the marinade/broth, and add a lot of flavor.

if you try them and love them, you can make them yourself to control the oil and salt content. BUT they are time consuming. just heat your oven to 200 degrees. then wash and halve your tomatoes, squeezing out most of the seeds. (i usually do at least 3 pounds at a time to make it worth it). then put tomato halves on a NON STICK cookie sheet (or oil the sheet) and sprinkle with a little salt. place in the oven until they look like wrinkled, around 7 hours, less if your tomatoes are small. they are great in pasta dishes and pizzas and also with chicken.

I get the dry packed bagged ones and put them in soups.

I love love LOVE sundried tomatoes! Especially in pasta and sandwiches. It depends on how the particular ones you get are made if they're healthy or not. They can be healthy though.

I love them.  They have concentrated, sweet tomato flavor.  I buy the ones in packets with no oil, salt or sugar added. Read the label! The texture should be kind of leathery but not hard.  If they do dry out and get hard, a soak in hot water for a few minutes softens them right up.

Tomatoes are loaded with nutrients!  Sun Dried Tomatoes

they are (or should be!) what the name says, so that they are SUN dried, not oven dried.

the add flavor to salads, soups and pastas. i used to like the oil ones but duee to my weight loss eating plan i now just buy the dried ones - i do not like the whole chewy ones much, probably because i never got really good quality, but i buy chopped ones in a spice shop in my town and they are perfect and full of flavour, so that a spoonful is enough for  abig salad or two servings of soup

I have an abundance of tomatoes right now.  Maybe instead of making sauce to freeze I'll dry a few....Thanks.
