i've always suspected that the cashiers in the grocery store check out what people buy and make judgments.  i mean, if i'm in a long line, i'm doing the same thing (and feeling either smug or ashamed, depending on what's in my own basket).  well, the other day it was confirmed.  i was doing my post-holidays get-back-on-track shop, and the chatty cashier said to me, "Oh, you were doing really well until the chocolate almonds!"  I agreed.  She went on to say, "All organics and fresh stuff and everything!"

so, i guess my suspicions were correct.  they just don't say anything when i'm buying chips and chef boyardee.

Over a yr ago when I first started calorie counting I decided to go to a all organic grocery store that was over 2 hours from me. The cashiers and most of the employee's were all of asain descent. Since I dont speak the language I didnt have a clue what they were so chatty about once I got my cart up to the checkout line.

So the next time I went their I brought a friend with me that could interpret the language for me because it got me curious I must admit im a glutton for punishment. The first thing out of the cashiers mouth when in line was " Oh the fat american girl is here trying to be skinny again" with a large giggle. So I had my friend politely say to her yes my overly plump friend is here buying your rather expensive merchandise shall I ask for the manager or will you keep your trap shut the next time she is here? She turned about as red as can be and never looked either one of us in the eye hehe.
lol angie...that was a smart thing to do [=
ha!  that's wicked.

i have to admit, though, when i see people loading up their carts with pop and chips and frozen pizzas, with their kids in tow, i want to shake them.

way to go! i would never give them another dime of mine! i would have left my purchase on the counter too!

i was a cashier for many years and i never made judgments.  i would, however, make out my own grocery list for after work. "that looks good. i am almost out of that" that sort of stuff.

remember you will find judgmental people wherever you go. just remember it is about THEM not you! somehow they feel better about themselves by finding fault in others. don't buy into it. i would have said, "i can't wait till i get in the car! i am going to eat the whole bag before i get home because if my husband sees it, i will have to share! the organic food is for my pet bunny's that live in the house with us. we have 75 of those little rascals. " that auta give her something to talk about!!! hehehe

kat Cool

you guys wanna know something....

When im at the check out line....i peak at what the other person behind me is buying and analyze it ( i make sure im not obvious tho lol).
I am a cashier and I have to admit that this job definitely makes me think twice about what I feed my body. It is unreal how many people buy those lean cuisine meals and then chips, cookies, soda. And they are 9 times out of 10 overweight. I have never made fun of anyone however, only feel sympathy. Which probably isn't any better. I do comment on what people buy or ask them how they liked it. And when someone comes through my line buying the same items as I do, I sometimes have to wonder if they are on this website as well :)

hey!  don't knock the frozen pizzas.  they make me happy...granted i only eat 1/2 an individual pie per meal and it's usually from kashi or amy's...
i can't imagine doing that job and NOT noticing!  i thought my experience was amusing, actually.  she was very sweet about it, and i wasn't sensitive about my little bag of bulk candy.
hey bud.

don't you worry - i'm all over the frozen pizzas.  can you get dr. oetker's where you are?

no, this isn't canada, so obviously we are lacking on the good stuff.

BUT there is flatbread pizza which comes from a pizza place in vermont, and it rocks.  but then again, i guess vermont is practically canada, right?

when i worked in returant i judged you on what you ordered and your service was based off of that ^_^...  bad tippers all tend to order the same crap.

And what crap was that?

HK this is way off subject but I had a really odd dream about you the other night..... it was the you I know off of here from what I know and you really didnt have a face because I havent really looked at any of your pics before=) Just so you know you were sitting on a street corner with a can that said CC contributions needed, Love HK King Mod for CC.

Oh my gosh that is funny! I am going to stay in the dark about what my nail girl says about me when I'm there. It's probably along the lines of "Oh the neurotic girl is back again"

I was a cashier at a grocery store a lifetime ago, too young to worry about what I was eating, but I never judged a person's purchases. If they were overweight and buying twinkies, who cares. If they were underweight and buying diet soda, who cares. BUT I did do a lot of "Dang that looks good, I need to find some of that."

*SNORT* Oh my god! That's FUNNY! :D :D

*puts on King Mod Hat, notes it looks like the Burger King Crowns from the 80s, but ISN'T!*

OK, and now back to the topic at hand. :D

puppy, you're missing an element from your correlation: same crap [+ bad service] = lousy tip.
*puts money in HK's collection can*

i have to admit...i scope out other people's baskets at the supermarket all the time, and sometime i think things that i would never ever say to them! not proud of it, but i do it. i try to keep in mind that you never know who that person is shopping for though so it's really not fair to judge!

Angie, that is TOO FUNNY!!!

I once bought a slab of ribs and some chow mein and ate it for dinner and it was so good, I bought a slab of ribs and chow mein the NEXT day and somehow managed to get into the same cashier's lane and YES she commented about how I was eating the same thing again.  I guess the look on my face said it all because she said "Oh, I guess I should just mind my own business".

It DID kind of make me think about what I was eating, I knew I was eating too much, glutonous really.  Also, if I choose to be bad, I'm going to get in another cashier's line next time...lol.

Hey all, I just want say too, that it FEELS REALLY GOOD TO ADMIT TO A GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT I ATE A SLAB OF RIBS AND CHOW MEIN.Embarassed
No it stems from table after table same thing after same thing... these people just tip poorly... we started calling it back in the kitchen no matter if the server was male or female (girls tend to always get more) and no matter how nice you were.
