SUPPORT GROUP/CHALLENGE for 20-somethings!
This is a now CLOSED support group for 20-somethings looking to loose 20+ pounds over the next several months. We will have our weigh-in closing date on Monday (meaning if you would like your weigh in to be counted for the week the posting should be made by midnight on Monday night). We also will have weekly challenges for whoever wants to participate! Which I believe should start on Mondays unless anyone thinks otherwise.
I have posted all of the stats as a Journal entry under my name, and will post an abbreviated version below which I will update weekly. I still believe the important part of this group is posting and helping each other on a consistent basis, so if you don't want to do the weigh in that's fine, you just need to be actively participating in the group by posting. At this point looking at everyones goals I think that this group should go at least until the end of the summer (last weigh-in 9/1/08) and then we can choose if we'd like to continue. I also think those of us who are committing to the weekly weigh-ins should maybe set mini-goals for ourselves. Something like the end of May and middle of July may be good.
Future Weigh-ins should be posted like this:
LW (Weight last week): ***
CW (Current Weight): ***
Just to make it easier for me to find and post. Let me also note that because of the nature of this group (it's size and it's purpose) the only thing that I feel needs to be steady in this group is people being consistant. It is totally fine if you choose to not weigh in, or if you are busy for a few days or are going on vacation, but the main purpose of this group is to have a support group, and I don't want the group to be defunct by the end of the month because everyone has forgotten about it or has just given up (which this group should help anyone from doing!). I have done it myself, joined a group and fallen behind, and just forgotten about it, but since this group is so small to begin with, it would be pretty pointless if that happened. So the one rule that I feel should be in place is that you need to check in at least weekly, and if you aren't going to be able to just place a post saying that you will be gone for awhile. If you are gone for more than a week I'll send you a message seeing how you are doing, because I am here to help :) But if anyone vanishes for over 2 weeks your spot will be open for someone else to take. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, I just feel that it's the only way to guarantee that everyone is committed.
Please let me know if there are any mistakes in my postings of your stats.

6/25 Our loss for this week is 9 pounds!
This brings our total loss to 114.8 pounds!!!
REMEMBER The challenge this week is to stick with the basics of healthy living.
**You can stop it from double-spacing if you hold down the shift key while you press enter. I'm not sure why the bold wouldn't work though? Also, my stats are right in the forum post but wrong in the journal entry. Not a big deal.
Thanks for the info. I fixed the journal entry, I keep trying with the double spacing and that isn't working either?!?! Maybe it's because I have a mac, some other stuff has been wacky on this forum because of it. Maybe if I go back to regular CC I will be able to fix it?
I'm also wondering where everyone else is! I guess I'll make another post on the last page to let everyone know to head on over. And the activity challenge sounds like a good start :)
Sweet! whitelyte, checking in! XD
Thank you for all your hard work! It looks fantastic!
I totally up for the first challenge... Lets. PUMP. YOU. UP! *flex*
... sorry about that, dork moment ^^;
Im really excited to start this. Ive never taken part in anything like this before and I think that's probably why i've always failed at my goals.
I only started CC on Sunday, and I didnt have access to a scale so i guestimated my weight.
I bought a scale today and hoped on today.
****So my starting weight is actually 183 (only 3 lbs more than my estimate, so thats not too bad)
The first mini-goal i set for myself was: By June 8th (day before my anniversary and vacation) 172lbs. So thats about 1.5 lbs per week. I hope I can do it :)
Ive also set up weekly goals for myself. Next week my goal is to do a full body workout at least once ( 2 sets at 10 reps) , and 3 cardio workouts ( I do Turbo Jam 20 min workout, and Turbo Jam: Ab Jam) Im adding in Turbo Jam: Turbo Sculpt which seems more like a lower end weight routine.
My second week goal is to add an extra set to my weight training and try to squeeze in one more day.
I just wish I wasn't so busy with school. Spending 9 to 12 hours in class then having to do homework and working leaves little time for the gym.
The activity challenge sounds good to me! My weigh-ins will have to wait until I get a new scale...accidentally splashed water on the old one and it died (oops).
Oh I wanted to add:
Im from North Bay, which is in Northern Ontario.
I hope there are some other Canadians :)
yay! i'm excited for this! it's nice to have a group of ppl about the same age working towards the same goal. we all deal with mostly the same things.
my sn and goal weight should be changed: ktcort13 and goal weight of 160.
little challenges should be great. maybe we can all send you our ideas in messages and you can come up with what challenges to do. it's great to be accountable to each other every week.
so i am going to start my triathlon training tomorrow with a swim workout. i'm super excited. if anyone wants a great challenge, check out your local Team in Training chapter. It's a great way to get in shape, make a difference, and meet a lot of amazing people. If anyone has any questions about that, feel free to ask me!
I'm going to plan out my mini-goals and get back to you all with them!
Is anyone from California? I live near San Francisco...just came up here in January from L.A.
steviegiles~
LOL I am!! I'm from So Cal! In between LA and San Diego. Ever heard of Hemet?
Oooh, may I join? :)
I'm 22 from Ontario Canada, and in college. I'm almost done my program [2 more dreadful weeks!] then I'm going into Autism & Behavioural sciences field. Here are my stats:
Starting weight [Aug.07]: 265
Current weight: 197
Mini goal: 185
Ultimate goal: 140
Good luck everyone!!
<3 Jenn
I think sometimes it's a bit easier to stick to challenges that someone else has set for you (ever tried to make imaginary deadlines for yourself in classes where the prof doesn't really set due-dates? Impossible! I always end up handing everything in the last week, it's awful!)
mysticdragon - I bought TurboJam on dvd but I've only used it once or twice. Everyone talks about how great it is but I found it sort of awkward, I guess because I was pretty used to a couple of the tae-bo videos I have. I took karate for a long time when I was younger and Billy Blanks moves were all really familiar to my body (and the videos kick my butt, they're so intense and long!)
I guess I should give TurboJam another try, I'm sure it would be more fun if I let myself learn the moves. TurboSculpt interests me too because I don't think I'm doing enough strength/weights.
stevie! i live in sacramento! my boss is actually in san fran today haha. hwo are you enjoying being back in norcal?
I live in Oregon (near Portland), but near the end of April I'll be moving to Santa Barbara for a few months. I might have limited internet access during this time, the place I'll be living doesn't have internet access. But there are internet cafes and stuff.

ktcort13 - I think it's a good suggestion to send messages with challenge ideas and let xzcandizx pick one for the week, it seems like an easy, organized way to do things. But I guess it's really up to xzcandizx. Would you mind that job?

That sounds perfect! I was worried about coming up with all the ideas anyway...I thought I'd run out of them after a few weeks and not know what to do?!?
And it does totally make sense because of the fact that for the most part a different person will come up with the challenge every week so everyone has input and we all will be accountable :)
I have that procrastination problem as well. When you try to set deadlines for yourself before things are actually due, and then you figure it's not actually due for another couple of days/weeks and you just wait and it all piles up. It's something that needs to be fixed before I get to law school in the fall! Because pretty much all the classes are either midterm and final or just a final. Any suggestions? haha
jennisonamission- I will add you to the group, but I do not want this group to get too large, so if anyone else is reading this, I'm sorry but the group is CLOSED.
Other than that, how is everyone doing in their first week???
I am also one of those people who tends to weigh themselves (almost) everyday, out of fear that if I wait a week I may have "wasted" that week if I wasn't doing that well. I am definitely trying to pace myself, but it's that feeling once you start living healthier you want almost immediate gratification, I want to see some difference! Anyone else get that way?
Other than that, it isn't too busy of a week for me. My days to the gym have been a little scattered because I am just starting to get allergies and they are not being kind to me! It seems like there are a lot of Californians and Canadians, any New Yorkers or Northeasters on here?
kingje - Wow thats great that you've done all that. When I was say, 12 to 15 i was really active, I played baseball all the time. I sorta lost interest when I moved to the North. Mainly because the summer season is so short. For the past 3 years Ive basically been sitting at a desk, thats the extent of my activity.
I joined a bowling team this year, its not exactly a huge calorie burner, but it was a good start to going out.
But as for TurboJam, I only just bought it about a week ago. I tell you, I am so out of shape, I did the 20 minute cardio and I thought I was going to die after 10 minutes. I found the Ab Jam not too bad because it was only 10 minutes standing, but the floor work i found challenging. So I think maybe its good for someone starting off, or if you're alittle more into the dance type moves. (Also Im jealous, I wish I could take karate but there are no teachers in this town)
I just did the Sculpt today, (like 15 min ago O.o) I my body doesnt ache (but that might change tomorrow) but during the actual video i had sweat pouring off me. I was using 3lb hand weights. I would recommend doing this one for sure, and its nice because if you find it too easy you can just grab more weight. Its basically all lunges, squats, rows, lifts etc.. and some compound moves that get your upper and lower at the same time.
I was looking at the Taebo stuff as well, but watching the clips it looked alittle too challenging for me right now. I think i might give it a shot when I get bored of just the turbo jam stuff. I need a good mix of things to keep me interested.
xzcandizx - I know what you mean about weighting yourself every day. I try to put my scale away now and only do it once a week. I get so down sometimes when I stand on the scale and dont see a difference. For some reason I seem to expect to see that 5lb drop every time i hop on. hehe..
I also try to go by how my clothing feels. When I put on my favorite pants and they fit alittle nicer that just makes my day :D
(hope people dont mind, I tend to be overly chatty when im posting .. prepare for more long ones ;) )
ktcort13--It's nice here in norcal...really beautiful! Though, I am missing it down in L.A., but that's probably b/c I don't really know too many people up here!
I'm from Texas and am really jealous of everyone on the west coast! In-state tuition will keep me here for a while longer.
So far I'm doing alright with weighing every day. Although it's really disappointing when my scale drops a couple pounds, but it comes right back the next day.
Does anyone else run? I've done it on and off for years, and just started again about 7 weeks ago. On a good day I can run around 3 miles in 30 minutes (or a bit longer). I love taking my dog (who can and does run circles around me and acts like she's just warmed up when I'm dying). I'm starting to transition to gym workouts (mostly elliptical) though, because it's already getting too hot and humid here! Well, it's not that bad yet, but I'm a wimp when it comes to hot weather.
Hey Everyone,
The goal sounds good, 3 times a week of activity. Though I do this every week I think it's a good place to start for everybody.
I guess everybody is sharing where they are. I am from Wisconsin. Yeah Ya!
My biggest food issue is bad carbs I guess. I've been a vegetarian since Oct and in January I became Vegan. Therefore I don't eat any dairy, eggs, meat etc. So I spend my days living amongst carbs like white rice and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. It's difficult to be a vegan living on campus, but im figuring it out.
Im also a compulsive scale checker. I think im going to limit myself to wednesdays for now on because it gives my body time to catch up from the weekends and wednesday is one of my freer days in life where I can log it on here.
Questions:
Are we starting this Monday for weigh in?
Should I send my stats to candi or just post them in here somewhere?
Do the "challenges" start monday and end monday?
anyways, peace out.

I think we should start the weigh ins this monday, because it's almost a full week. If you don't feel like it's enough time/don't feel like posting this monday but want to start your stats for the following week that is totally ok with me.
I think it makes sense for the challenges to start and end mondays? I don't know what do you guys think?
I'm totally open to suggestions here so it's whatever the majority wants to do. I just think there needs to be a day that the weigh-ins come in by just so I can post them all on a weekly basis and not be too unorganized.
As for the weigh-ins, also up to you guys. I've noticed in other groups that they do message the info, but then some people always end up posting it on the board, and I don't want to miss it because I'm looking in the wrong place. So I guess we can do a vote on that too!
Will I lose weight if I eat the same food over and over?
You can lose weight despite eating the same food day-after-day as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn. In fact, eating the... Read more
