Support Group for Teens
A lot of times when im having a bad day, it helps me a lot to talk to someone in a similar situation as me.
For me, being a junior makes it very hard to find time to exercise as much as id like too. And on those late nights of homework, the pantry calls.
When im having a bad day, it makes me feel better to talk to someone who has been in a similar situation. And on any day, reading other people's success stories, even if its just about a small thing like resisting that free cookie, motivates me to work harder!
SO, this is a support group for high schoolers who are currently working to lose/maintain their weight and want a place to vent frustrations, get advice, or share successes!
Introduce yourself, post stats so we can get a feel of what situation each of us are in, post goals if you'd like, and chat ![]()
Christine
Age: 16
Stats: 5' 4", 108.5 lbs
Goals: Turn my flab into muscle, start eating healthy every day, and to stop binging when im stressed
age: 15 (16 in 2 weeks)
starting stats: 5'2", 175 lbs
lowest stats: 5'2", 107 lbs
current stats: 5'2" 115-116 lbs :( :(
goal stats: 110 lbs
i was anorexic for about 6 months, and then started eating normally again and was able to maintain 108-111 lbs for about 3 months and then binge ate my way up to 115-116.
my goals are to get back down to 110, tone and quit binge eating and consistently eat 1700 per day. i tend to eat 2200 one day and then 1300 the next and then 2000 and then 1500 and so on.
glad to hear you are eating normally again! :D
i know just what you mean with binge eating
i do it too. like, after dinner, ive had my fill for the day and i know it and i go and eat a chocolate chip cookie anyway. and then some.
your eating habits sound a lot like mine too! except i'll eat 2200 one day, and then the next day too, and the day after i'll try to make up for it and still eat 1800 :(
im trying to consistently eat 1600-1800 per day
btw, you look really skinny in your picture... are you sure you need to lose weight? maybe a lot of your weight is muscle
you both are teeny (:
i'm alaina. 5'9 1/2, 113 lbs, 16 yrs old. i do dual credit at a college in addition to homeschooling, and i'm in a ballet company, so i know what it's like to be totally stressed out :/
at any rate, i think i have body dysmorphic disoder, i have anorexic tendencies sometimes, and i'm getting over addictions to certain things. i know i'm underweight but i'm not interested in gaining and all i'm trying to do is get enough calories in a day to maintain.. i almost never have a problem with binging, my main problem is actually eating enough, sadly.
so my goals are to eat at least 1200 a day, maintain a healthy vegetarian diet, try not to lose any more weight, and to keep a good body image.
Yay! something for teens! alright, I am 16years old . I want to lose weight, but i'm not too stressed about it. Right now i'm eating about 2000calories daily. I know that sounds like alot(it is!!). About a month ago, i started eating an average of 500-800 calories daily and i lost 8lbs. then i realized how unhealthy i was being, so i upped my calories. I ended up gaining like 3lbs cause my metabolism was slow, but i've now lost 2.5 of those three pounds and am still losing on 2000 calories(slowly but surely).
I'm not really sure what my goals are. Now i'm less worried about weight and my goal is to fit into smaller jeans. I just joined a gym, so hopefully i can turn my fat into muscle rather than just eating nothing & wasting away my body.
I'm Sian, and I'm 15 and 9 months. I live in Merry ol'd England, which is (more than) a tad rainy at the moment. I'm 5 foot, or was last time i measured, and weigh 121 pounds, having lost 11 pounds in the past 6 months. Goal weight at the moment is 112 pounds. I'm a british size 10, but can sometimes wear size 8 tops. I would like to become a low size 8. Nothing lower lol, i like my curves, specially my boobs :D I eat 1000calories a day during the week, but weekends are normally 1500 or higher. Compared to everyone else on this thread 1000 sounds quite small but I'm never hungry so it works for me ![]()
Ohh I agree with everyone else pretty much. I'm also from the UK (yay rain). Trying to eat around 1200 a day, although often about 1000 durring the week. I just got out of a rut where I binged a lot but back on track now!
Age:16 &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; Stats: 5'2, 119lbs &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; Goals: 110lbs and to tone up stomach area.
yay nice to meet you all :)
wow alaina...that does sound pretty stressful
at least you're trying to eat enough though, yeah? :D
isn't 5'10.5" and 125 healthy? i started out at 125 lbs before i lost weight and but the difference is i was 6.5 inches shorter than you are. i feel short.
curves are better than skin and bones by far :]
magnolia_blossom same here haha, i'm like the tallest out of all my friends.
i know what you mean about curves, what i meant was more along the lines of actual boobs and a butt. i'd rather be skinny though i think.. i've never seen anyone with boobs that was really skinny besides like victoria's secret models. so probably never gonna happen.
I am sure you all know that Calorie Count is all about healthy weightloss goals and sustainable weight management.
Several of you are persistently undereating by eating less than 1200 calories a day (which is the barebones healthy minimum for a grown woman of 100 lbs weight, 5'1" height). Teenagers need more calories and many of you aren't even reaching 1200. Unless you change your eating habits this thread is subject to deletion or locking per posting guidelines.
Here is some nutrition information for Teens:
http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/nutrition/
In fact, you should understand that this site is not really appropriate, at this stage, for teenagers. The site tools are meant for adults, and not children. For children, sites like http://www.kidsnutrition.org/ are much more appropriate. They can tell you how many calories you should be eating, along with how much you should be weighing.
Take it from me, a rather lazy 34 year old who needed to lose 30 lbs ... I did it by eating at least 1500 calories a day! So bottom line is up your calories to a new healthier you!!!
hm..
me personally, id rather be a BIT meaty than skin and bones
skin and bones, like some models are, can look grotesque and creepy, while extra meat just looks like extra meat
of course, im not saying id rather be morbidly obese than a bit underweight
magnolia_blossom
i dont think there's a healthy way to bring yourself down to an unhealthy weight :/
and if you think about it, since your so tall, you'll always tower over your short and tiny friends. its better to look proportional than to look the same size as someone 6 inches shorter than you :D im sure you are gorgeous...and you do ballet! so you must already have a nice/fit body.
Nycgirl - I have to agree that 12year old girls should probably not be obsessing over calories, but as many of us teens are at the pre-adult age of 15-18, I think it's good that we are learning how to be aware and keep our bodies fit & healthy as we arrive into adulthood. In society, often teens are told not to worry about weight and are driven to Mcdonalds and fed icecream causing them to be obese by the time they are 40. So at least us teens here actually want to learn how to stay fit so we don't get fat when we go to college, and when our metabolism drops, and then when we have babies.
shadowmystika - what you said makes sense, but i've actually been eating about 1800-2300cals a day for the past 2 weeks and i've lost half a pound. Most days I eat enough to maintain my weight or even over maintenance level, but I must have boosted my metabolism or something by eating so much.

i TOTALLY agree.
what's with the people on here saying we need to eat so much? older teens are NOT that different from adults.
Hey guys, my name's Allie, I'm 13 and 83 lbs, 4'10". My goals are to eventually stop counting calories, and overall to just be healthy. =D.
I disagree to some extent that 12 year olds should not be obsessing over calories, many 12 year olds ARE in fact overweight and I don't think there's necessarily a certain "age" that you become healthy at. It's never too early to start forming good habits, I do agree with that though to some extent because calorie deprivation at a young age can stunt growth and development...

yes i didn't mean to offend at all, i do agree with you that it's never too early to start forming good habits. I just think children/young teens should worry more about being healthy than counting calories. I'm glad you eventually want to stop counting calories, and just be healthy! Trust me, you will be MUCH happier once you stop obsessing over food. I wish I didn't have to count calories, but i'm too scared i'll gain weight if i stop.

Obviously, I agree that teenagers should learn to be fit and healthy and not eat fast food. Clearly I was a teenager once not so horrifically long ago ... However several girls on this thread are consuming less than 1200 calories a day when teenagers (yes, even the ones 15-18 years old) need to consume more calories. In fact, I assume the girls who are eating only 1000 calories may not even realize that undereating can hurt their weightloss rather than helping it! In addition, several girls have the desire to lose weight which will make them underweight.
Staying fit and good habits do not equate to undereating and having unrealistic and unhealthy goals. That was my point and besides that as a moderator I need to let you know what the Calorie Count posting guidelines are.
Teenagers should of course get in shape and take control. Truly good habits can never be started too soon.
hey samantha :)
well, hopefully this support group doesnt just become one giant debate.
being thin is very important to me but being healthy comes right along with it.
so anywayy...just to make this more of a support group, we should post updates on how we're doing with our goals
im having issues with eating healthy everyday.
instead of bread and PB for breakfast today, i ate a poptart.
which is definitely a crappy choice :/ dont know why i did it
