Not too sure what to think, am I at a healthy weight?

Quote  |  Reply

I am currently averaging 126.5 lbs. I am 5 foot 3. This would make my BMI 22.3 according to the tools on this site and it says healthy weight. My starting weight was 163 in July of 2007.

I don't know if clothes are just being sized bigger these days or what. I have been trying on summer clothes and have found I fit in sizes anywhere from 1 - 5 .......this doesn't really seem right to me??? I think when I was around this size about 4 years ago, I was usually buying a steady size 6, but maybe my memory is wrong. I seem to be having trouble finding the sizes to fit me on the racks....there are way more double digit sizes and the low single digits are even kinda seem to be rare. I haven't really had this problem before, it used to be hard to find a large enough size and now I can't find a small enough size.

Also I saw my mother in law over the weekend and she made a huge deal over how much I have lost and went on and on that I don't need to lose anymore.

I would like to lose maybe 5 more pounds and tone up my giggly belly, thighs and bum. Can you people tell me what you think? I want to be healthy and I don't want to develop any Eating Disorders or unrealistic body expectations.

Yes you are at a healthy weight.  Now its not about losing weight its about toning your muscles.  As to the sizes, yes they have changed.   I couldn't figure out why I could fit into a size 12 in denium shorts, when the pair I was wearing when I got to the store was a 16.   Then, I saw the tag,  Walmart at least is now resizing their clothing to be more realistic with a womans body and healthy weight.    The last time I wore a 12 I was 140 lbs.  Im 190 now.  I would say they have definantly done something with the sizes.

yes, you are at a healthy weight.  and, yes, sizing has DEFINITELY changed!  i am also 5' 3" and i've worked in and around retail for years.  most clothing stores (aside from really high end or designer clothing) have made their small-numbered sizes bigger.  in other words, someone who used to be a true 10 may be fitting into a 6 or smaller!  this is VERY common.  and deceptive.  the thinking behind this marketing is that, when someone feels good about their size, they will buy more clothing.  and it works!

however, don't be fooled.  if you want to know your "true size," i recommend trying on some higher end clothing (even if you're not going to buy it).  this will give you a more realistic comparison of your old size to your new size.

you can find realistic sizing by trying on any of the following: united colors of benetton, eva franco, nicole miller, trina turk.

unrealistic sizing is found at: banana republic, gap, express, ann taylor, and most other major retail stores.

another quick note - let your weight goals be your own.  you are at a healthy weight.  and even if you do lose 5 lbs, you will still be at a healthy weight for your height.  try to ignore what may be misguided comments from others.  :)

and good luck finding a "true" size!

Well done for the weight loss first and for most, you are a healthy weight and should try and just tone up now because you'll convert anyother unwanted weight into muscle rather than lose weight and then tone to create more muscle.

Regarding the sizes, sizes are generally bigger, I live in the UK, and there is a difference especially between shops, for example those catering for younger people, topshops, miss selfridge etc. tend to have smaller sizes, whereas in, say Marks and spencers the 'same size' will actually be bigger measurements. You just have to get to know your body and what looks best where.

This is my next point start to love your body and your achievement rather than wanting to lose more and just live a healthy life both in respect to food and exercise!!

Congrats on your weight loss and becoming a healthier you. Yeah there is a lot of vanity sizing going on. at 140 I wore a size 4, a size 4 come on, lol. I'm about 146 now and trying to drop those last 5/6 lbs again and I can still fit my size 4s snuggly.

You're probably more muscular than you were which accounts for the same weight at a smaller size.  I used to be 140# and a size 4 at 5'8"
