surgery related weight loss
I just had what amounts to a gastric bypass because of recurring ulcers. I'm taking this opportunity to start eating healthy and lose the stubborn last 15 pounds I've always wanted to lose. I'm so frustrated though because I can only eat about 2 cups of food at a time. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get a days nutrition into six small meals? I'm having a hard time figuring it out. Also, since the surgery, I'm lactose intolerant, and not sure how to get calcium in my diet.
did your Dr recommend a nutritionist that can help with meal ideas while your tummy heals? My aunt had something similar and she tried to figure it out but always was hungry or stuffed feeling. We went to the nutritionist and she laid out like a dozen meal plans for her. She also couldn't handle milk afterwards, as I recall she took supplements and was told to eat certain veggies as they have calcium in them (spinach was one of them), I think she could eat yogurt ???.
Hello! :] Can you only eat small amounts of food at a time per doctor's reccomendation, or because you feel physically unable? Either way, I suggest low-density high-calorie foods. Good examples are nuts, dried fruits, peanut butter and avocados.
Calcium-wise... I've had to cut dairy (it was upsetting my stomach! ><) and aim to eat fairly clean, so avoid eating processed soy products too much so source a lot of it from other foods. Tofu is a good source of calcium as are spinach, figs, chickpeas and broccoli to name a few! Soy alternatives do tend to be fortified with calcium, too, if you're happy eating them. :] I hope you get better soon.
I had Gastric Bypass almost 6 years ago. At the time the most I could eat was 1/2 cup. Even at 2 cups it's going to be difficult to impossible to get all your nutritional needs met. My doctor recommended protein drinks, vitamins included calcium, magnesium, iron and a multi vitamin. The one thing you want to do is avoid empty calories and make sure your foods are all good quality nutritious foods. Lean meat, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables. I'd eat the meat first, the vegetables second, the fruit third and if you have any room left save the carbs for last. Also you may find that even though you can't tolerate dairy now, later you may be able too. A lot of people who had gastric bypass think they are lactose intolerant. Some really are but frequently it's just the stomach getting used to it's new size and healing from surgery. I also found that because I could eat so little denser foods made me feel more full. This was more neccisary as I got farther away from having had my surgery. I can eat 2 cups now even though at first I couldn't get down 1/2 cup. By dense I mean a piece of meat or any food that is firm in texture will satisfy longer then something creamy or soft. Hope this makes sense.
It does make sense! Thanks so much for the tips. I definitely think I need a mult-vitamin and I've already stopped empty calorie eating and drinking (like soda).
How long did it take you to heal? How did the weight loss process go for you?
Where can I see 1/8th or 1/6th of a pie or angel food cake?
This is the best way to picture a portion of pie or cake: Draw a circle to represent the circumference of the cake or pie (9" pie? 10" cake?... Read more
