Honestly what is it with white rice getting such a bad treatment: "no, no food", "taboo food". Ok it's not as nutritious as brown, but it won't freaken kill you! If the rest of the diet is not horrible there is nothing wrong with white rice! Ok end rant, on to the question.

Sushi (sashimi, nigiri),  is pretty healthy. Only thing with nigiri is that rice is mixed with vinegar, so it bumps up sodium. If you are concerned about high sodium intake keep an eye on that, or go with nigiri option.

What is not all that healthy are all the rolls that American's LOVE. Specially the baked ones or with "spicy sauce" since it's basically mayo. California rolls have imitation crab which is fish mixed with mayo. If you do go for rolls go for basic ones like spicy tuna roll (tuna in a roll).

P.S. I LOOOVE sushi also. :)

^I do that. If I get a roll I usually get the tekka, which is just tuna. Sometimes I'll splurge and get the Philadelphia roll, but it's not very good for you, haha.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE JAPANESE! The reason I say Japanese and not sushi is because when I go I eat SASHIMI and grilled meats that don't have sauces on them! I also get miso soup and boiled spinach with bonito and sesame seeds! Hmm! I just had some Japanese a second ago (just finished) and wish I could eat more! When I get it to-go I wrap my sashimi in nori to make my own "rolls" - and did you know when you go out to eat, if you eat at the sushi bar you can ask the sushi master to do anything you want - just as long as you're nice of course!

Here is a website that states the calorie content for sushi and such too... http://homepage3.nifty.com/maryy/eng/calorie. htm#table

I love Sushi too!!  This is my favorite site for calorie content.

Don't forget to click the tabs!!! the first page shows you the Whole Roll!

I just wanted to add (Im working right now as a server in a sushi restaurant) that our place (and im sure other places will do this too) will make a cucumber maki wrap (aka just sashimi wrappy in cucumber) it is AMAZING!!! Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon, Sawara, Avocado, and other veggies all wrapped in cucumbers!!!

My advice is stay away from anything with the words "Super" "Dynamite" "Crunchy" "Tempura" in the name.

Hmm oh and if you havent yet tried Super White Tuna go for, its so yummy!!

The super white tuna you are referring to is ESCOLAR! And by the way - I am super jealous of you for working in a sushi restaurant because I am sure you get a NICE discount!!!!! If only I have the patience to wait on people! ha ha!

Have you ever tried Hamachi Kama?

the rice in sushi and crepes are the only non whole wheat/grain carbs i eat. most of the time they make the rice with vinegar, which helps with digest/makes you fuller faster/good for dieting in general. but yeah as previous posters say, ur not going to gain from it unless you either eat the whole sushi bar or eat the fried stuff.

YES! The Escolar, it is so good I cannot begin to tell you!!
I havent tried Hamachi Kama yet, but will def put it on my list to try (Im currently trying to try all sashimi varieties).  I did get to taste o-toro which was super yum! The only thing I havent really been a fan of was Uni (Sea Urchin) texture was just not my thing. Also had some Salmon Roe and a Quail Egg the other day which I suprisingly loved.

Oh and I totally did pick a sushi place to work to reap the benefits of a discount, which is awesome, for someone who is sushi obsessed!!

How often do you get to eat Japanese?

Hm well so far this week I have had sushi TWICE! ha ha ah ah! And I might actually be getting some tonight because whenever I meet up with my brother for dinner we ALWAYS do sushi! I got him completely HOOKED on EEL - I couldn't believe he had never tried it! Now I am trying to get his girlfriend to try it but she is adamant in NOT trying it... Oh well, more eel for me! ha ha ha! I wish you and I lived close - we would so have a sushi pig out fest and it would be amazing! LOL!

Typically though I have sushi at least once a week - At Whole Foods they serve up some sashimi SLABS in the fish department so I raid them whenever I go! Currently I have about a pound of sashimi grade salmon in my freezer (to kill the parasites of course.. ha ha) and about a pound of eel! :)
