Help! I just moved to Los Angeles and have been indulging in sushi...namely, cucumber rolls and spicy tuna/regular tuna rolls. but I can't find them on Calorie count so I can track my calories...anyone know what I should be looking up? And is it just a myth that sushi is good for you?
I'm curious as well. I just googled "calories in sushi" here's a few sites that popped up...
Calorie King, has a huge list of links to sushi types
Calorie-count, more types here
Sushi encyclopdia, a list of fish calories.
Sushi Calories & Nutrition Facts, lots of info on this page!
My guess would be that the white rice its wrapped in is the worst part (they add something to make it stick as well, not sure what it is). The other day I saw a sushi at PCC in Seattle made with brown rice! Think I'm going to try those soon...
Sweet! Thank you!
I've had brown rice sushi before and it is DELICIOUS!!! The stickiness in the sushi is actually just a little rice vineger. And I suppose if the white rice is the worst part, sushi must be pretty decent for you.
For calorie count, I added the "sushi, tuna" one, but it's pretty obvious that they're just counting the fish...I did a bit of research and a tuna roll can be anywhere from 40 calories for one roll to 290 calories and 11grams of fat!!! You can see why I'm freaking out a bit.
290-- that is a scary number for bite of sushi!!!
Dear Lord! the first link says that one spicy tuna roll is 449 calories!!! Granted, it's for 12 pieces, which would technically be two rolls...but still....
A lot of spicy tuna has mayo in it mixed with the spice. But you can order no mayo. A friend of mine can't eat mayo and I tried her roll and never noticed the difference, it'll save you big time on calories.
290 for a roll isn't that bad, afterall it is 6 pieces. I will order a roll and seaweed salad for diner and its 350 calories and I'm stuffed.
I eat sushi reguardless of the calorie count...honestly what part of it is bad for you? Plus little fat...a little bit of avacado but thats basically it.
Mmmm...I love sushi! This thread is making my mouth water!
I find that sushi is one of the best things for me to eat. You are getting your fish for protein, and it tastes delicious! I think really the worst part of it is the salt in the soy sauce, if you use it. I find that spicy tuna rolls are a little higher on the calories, but it is sooo much better than a california roll! Plus, I've discovered how great the fitness rolls are. They are pretty much the same as a vegetable roll, but they add lemon. Sushi fills me up so much, I take in so many less calories than if I were to go to Subway, for example. You can't go wrong with that!
The stickiness in the rice is vey normal for Japoneese rice the spices in the rice is a sugar and vinigar powder.
Yes, sushi is definately not low on the calorie count, but if you stay away from the tempura rolls, which, unfortunately, are very good, there really isn't anything processed or "bad" for you involved. Before dinner, order some edemame as an appetizer, and some miso soup. This will help to fill you up a little so you won't be starving once the rolls come. Also, check out what rolls are available wrapped in cucumber rather than rice. I have a restaurant by me that does a tuna "lollipop" with cucumber, which is really, really good.
GOOD quality sushi only has a really thin layer of rice on it. places that don't really know how to make it will just pile on the rice, leaving a much thicker layer. if you don't want to eat too much carbs, but still want to fill up, order edamame, one roll of sushi and some sashimi (raw fish without rice).
On CC, the average piece of Nigiri Sushi (w/ rice) is 70 cals. Sashimi is a lot less. Do a food search for Sashimi and Nigiri. They're on here. Edamame is great, but it adds up fast, so check it out before you eat!!
Love Sushi! (:
