Sushi Lovers- if you wanted to splurge but not too much?
On Saturday I have a pretty active day planned and am hoping to have fairly calorically light meals for breakfast and lunch so I can go out for dinner with friends and eat a bit more than I otherwise would let myself.
The plan is to go out for sushi for dinner. I'd feel really good about a dinner with about 800 calories but would be willing to hit 1000. The restaurant we are heading to has a pretty good, well rounded menu and I am willing to eat just about anything (just not wild about tempura).
So, this is a question for fellow sushi lovers...staying in that caloric limit, what would you order?
Oh my goodness I LOVEEEE Japanese Food!!! Whenever I go I always get a HUGE sashimi platter and eat it ALL by myself: I am talking the sashimi PLATTER meant for 3 to 6 people! Ha Ha Ha!
Well I usually order sashimi entry, spicy scallop handroll, and scallop nigiri and Uni. I was at this Japanese restaurant the other day and they had an awesome cod liver as an appetizer. WOW! If they have it cold soba noodles with qual egg is also a good choice. I also order jelly fish appetizer sometimes, but it is kind of mediocre in most places. Tuna in ponzu sauce is also a great choice.

i start with a sunomono (cucumber salad with vinegar and crab) with octopus sashimi.. hot edamame.. and ill usually get poke and some kind of sashimi combo.. and cajun albacore or superwhite tuna sashimi is to die for! try it! wow i want sushi NOW!! ohh btw if the sushi place you go to does it i'll get spicy tuna roll wrapped in cucumber (which means no rice) or with brown rice.
Definitely sashimi. Salmon, smoked salmon, and yellowtail. Then maybe an unagi handroll and some poke and seaweed salad...mmm...
It's awesome to see that other people love sushi the same way I do.
I pretty much NEED to start my meal off with a bowl of miso soup... I think I feel the same way about miso soup other people do about chicken noodle soup, it's somehow good for the spirit because it's a comfort food. If somebody at the table will split an order of edamame with me I'll order it, I don't usually eat a whole order on my own.
Usually I have assorted sashimi but have started to especially like the scallop and mackerel. I never really ate a lot of mackerel before but I read you can eat it more often than some other kinds of fish because it is smaller and doesn't contain as much mercury.
I've never really brown rice rolls except as take-out in the grocery store but if I found a restaurant serving them I would definitely try it.
My weekend sushi dinner feels like it's a long way away ![]()
Tuna and salmon sashimi as without the rice its a good low cal starter.
Beef tataki as probably the lowest cal meat meal (also my favourite) and fantastic with some miso soup and some rice.
All washed down with a green tea.
I am with you on the Miso soup - that's a good starter. I prefer nigiri and rolls to straight sashimi, so I would do 4 pieces of nigiri - tuna and salmon, maybe a shrimp, whitefish or mackerel instead of two tunas. Also, a small roll - like spicy tuna or cucumber. I usually have a small hot sake, also, because the whole thing is such a treat and I love sake. Have a great dinner.
Oh yes how could I forget Miso soup! Although I am not a big fan of sake, or alcohol in general. lol.

A bowl of miso soup, an eel and avocado roll, and 4 pieces of salmon sashimi
Yum :) Sooo much delicious healthy fat!
I would have an ebi (shrimp) sunomono, with a rainbow roll (california roll with sashimi on top. Yum. I think thats actually what I'm going to have for dinner today...), and then usually another roll of some sort picked at random off of the menu. Sometimes an order of tempura or gyoza. I do, however, usually only go for sushi with my boyfriend or friends, and share both the rolls. If I am alone, the sunomono and the rainbow roll are sufficient for me.

mmmmm - eel! I love unagi & anago!! Those are melt in your mouth AMAZING... Escolar is also a really good one but it's pretty hard to find because a lot of people don't digest it well... and get the sh**s! ha ha - I don't so unfortunately all those who do, ruined it for me! Although I definitely had sashimi the other night and they loaded me with escolar - they definitely knew who they were serving! ha ha!
saba, yellowfin, and a bowl of miso
