Sushi question?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm a big lover of Sushi, and I'd like to know which one is the healthiest/most low cal one, and of course keeping the fabulous taste. I usually eat tempura tiger rolls which have loads of fat u_u

Which one do you recommend?

The california roll is the lowest in cals but is the most boring for sushi lovers...about 25cals per piece....the internet has some sites that offer an estimation of calories per piece in most sushi.

i love spicy tuna/salmon rolls without the cream cheese cuz i'm lactose intolerant. BUT if you're looking to reduce calories sashimi is a good alternative - it's [good-quality] fish on rice. get plenty of wasabi on there and you've got a great protein/carb mix. ask for brown rice and you get more fiber too.

cali rolls/imitation crab rolls are good too, but kinda boring like knevils32 said.

Sashimi is just the fish, nigiri is the fish on rice. Nigiri is about 50 calories more than sashimi (because of the rice, of course).

I am actually taking a sushi class right now and it's been interesting because of three things

1) there isn't really that much mayo in the rolls, I always thought that contributed to the high count in spicy tuna or spicy salmon but I was so wrong, it's about 1-2g max

2) there is an incredible amount of rice on rolls that have rice on the outside, about one cup (size of a baseball), rolls with rice on the inside are smaller and use much less rice

3) in nigiri the goal is to get between 13g and 15g of rice underneath

Since taking the class while in sushi restaurants I have asked them them to go light on the rice in both rolls and nigiri and all of the restaurants have been really great about it.

I'm a HUGE sushi lover. When my fiance and I get it, we almost always get spicy scallops, philly roll and some kind of speciality roll, like Las Vegas, or anything else that has 3 kinds of fish, cream cheese, black eel sauce and is tempura.

Oops!

I generally make my own sushi so I can control what goes in it.  I just made a roll last night and two tonight.  I am a sushi addict I believe.  I put a small amount of rice, then stuff it with salmon, fat free cream cheese, bell pepper, carrots, cucumber.  The beauty of sushi is that anything tastes good in it.  Well, almost anything.  I'm a firm believer in making my own.  I don't remember the last time I got sushi from a restaurant, but I will agree, it's pretty darn good anywhere I go.

if you order a basic tuna or salmon roll, it will be just the fish, rolled with rice on the inside, surrounded by seaweed (nori). this is probably lower in calories than a california roll, since there is no avocado and less rice. sashimi is my favorite and the lowest calorie option, but some people can't stomach raw fish by itself (hard for me to understand since i LOVE it, but it is different)

I don't like sashimi, it's not the same as sushi, and I think it was way too boring for me.

Kutiepi555: Thanks for the advice! I had the same idea since my father bought me a japanese food book, but I don't know where to get all the ingredients... most of supermarkets don't have them all, like some veggies like hakusai, daikon, nashi... and stuff.
