Sushi rice protein - for real?

Quote  |  Reply

Ok, so I was trying to log sushi for my lunch and was looking up the rice separately and discovered that calorie count says that 1-cup of sushi rice has 19.2 grams of protein!  This just doesn't seem right to me, especially compared to 1-cup of regular white rice which calorie count says has 4.3 grams of protein.  Is it just totally off, or is there something about sushi rice that I don't know?  This is entirely possible, as I am no where near a connoisseur of the food.  Any guidance here would be great.  Thanks!

Hm...maybe it's because the 1-cup of sushi rice was logged as raw? CC says that one cup of uncooked short-grain white rice has 13.0 grams of protein.

I think you were logging uncooked rice,

Yes, that would make sense, except it said cooked.

The calories also seem about right for cooked with the sushi add-ins.  I just wondered if there was some kind of additional ingredient in sushi rice that would increase the protein amount, or if the number was just off.  I'm guessing it's just wrong at this point.  Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, I'd say that's just wrong. It does say "sushi, rice only, cooked", 1 cup.

How does the Nutr Info get entered into cc? If this one is wrong/misleading, than I'm assuming others may be as well. Could be an issue. hmmm...

Just using common sense it doesn't seem right.  That's almost 20% protein and I don't know of any other rices that get much beyond 10%.  Perhaps it is special in some way....if so...I would add it to my list of foods to eat...lol....I"ll have to look into it further...

Here's a pretty good link to the USDA's data.  For glutinous rice (sushi rice) there are 3.5 grams of protein per cup cooked.  This is lower than most other rice types.
