Suvery for college...interpersonal communication

Quote  |  Reply

So I'm getting pretty desperate trying to find people to take this survey (my college is in a small town, so we don't have a lot of options outside of students at the school) so I'm hoping a few of you can help me out.

The scenario for the survey is that you are wearing a short skirt to work and a coworker approaches you with the intent to criticize your attire.  Please indicate, on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being most competent and 1 being least competent) how competent you feel they were with the criticism in each mini scenario.  Competence (for this survey) is a combination of effectiveness and appropriateness.

1- Very incompetent

2- Incompetent

3- Neither competent nor incompetent

4- Competent

5- Very competent

Thanks!

  1. Your coworker makes a positive initial statement (for example, by saying your skirt is cute) and proceeds to tell you your attire is not appropriate to wear to work.

    2. Your coworker gives you a friendly greeting (for example, by saying “I have not talked to you in a while, I hope you have been well) and proceeds to tell you your attire is not appropriate to wear to work.

    3. Your coworker asks about your well being (for example, by asking “How are you today?) and proceeds to tell you your attire is not appropriate to wear to work.

    4. Your coworker directly and confidently tells you your attire is not appropriate to wear to work and does not apologize for making the criticism.

    5. Your coworker uses several verbal fillers (for example, “uh” and “um”) while making telling you your attire is not appropriate for work.

    6. Your coworker tells you your attire is not appropriate to wear to work and specifies why it is not appropriate.

    7. Your coworker tells you, face to face, that your attire is not appropriate to wear to work instead of faxing or emailing you the criticism.

    8. Your coworker does not threaten you (for example, by saying “Wearing attire like that is going to get you fired”) when delivering the criticism about your attire.

    9. Your coworker does not compare you to other women of your age group (for example, by saying, “A woman of your age should dress more appropriately for work”).

    10. Your coworker does not justify the criticism with cultural ideas (for example, by saying “In the country I am from, women do not wear short skirts).

Please indicate your age range Under 18 18-25 36-44 45 and older

Although, I'm not sure what business it is of my co-worker to comment (and even give me reasons why) on my attire! LOL I mean, I gave them a 5 for giving me reasons - but that drops to about a 2 if they have no business telling me what to wear.

Crazy...I totally agree.  I got stuck with this as my topic and it seems to me like it isn't really appropriate for a coworker to criticize my clothing.  Personally, I think it's a human resources type thing :/

Why aren't you interviewing people on your campus or something? I think it's funny when people post their homework here for other people to do...

Chill, she wasn't insulting you and the point she's making is valid.  Though this isn't asking us to do the homework (which I appreciate as I've seen many that are), an internet forum is not the best way to get a random sample of people to fill out a survey.  ESPECIALLY on something like communication.
