Sweating through my shirt.....HELP!!

Quote  |  Reply

When I exercise I find that my back sweats alot and you can see it through my shirt. This hasnt been too big of a problem since I have been working out at home, but next week Im going back to university and will be working out at the gym. I also find that my back sweats when Im not exercising, but when Im out in general (like on a hot day or when Im shopping and its REALLY EMBARRASING!!). Is there any product out there that can help? Does anyone else have this problem? Any advice or tips that you can give me?

I have this problem in the gym, don't worry! White and black shirts will be your saviour. It shows up the sweat less. You can buy plain black or white shirts pretty cheaply, so invest in a couple and wear those to the gym. :D

For in general... I have less advice. D: Sorry.

Buy more black shirts.

I sweat.  A lot.  All the time.  And it doesn't help that I live in Florida.

It's a lot harder to tell you are soaked when you are wearing black.  It's not a coincidence that I'm decked in all black in my av even though I'm at home.  I wear black as often as possible.

White works, too, but some white shirts become see-through when wet and I tend to get permanent pit stains in my white shirts after 5-10 wearings.  Sexy, I know.  lol

Its comforting to know that Im not the only woman that has this problem.

When exercising, I wear:

  • a sports bra
  • a tight t-shirt
  • a loose jumper over it

My sports bra and t-shirt get soaked through with sweat, whereas the loose shirt/jumper stays dry. It's a great trick.

Go to a sports or running store and pick up some microfiber/wicking shirts. They're starting to make them in really nice styles now too. They really help your skin breathe, which helps to reduce sweating, and when you do sweat they dry really, really fast. Stay away from cotton, because although it's breathable it takes a long time to dry.

I sweat A LOT when I work out. My friend Courtney and I will go to the gym together and we're the only ones dripping when everyone else is just dry as can be. I just assume we're working harder than everyone else because we're sweating so much, so I think it's a good thing. It is pretty gross, but I have never found any ways of solving it either, so just do what jamminatorr said and buy some moisture-wicking workout clothes. And for days when you're just out and about, try baby powder. It works pretty well.

Sweating is normal at the gym.  Why spend time worrying about it?

I liked sweating at my University gym. I'd look at the non-sweaty, perky little girls running around with earrings in, makeup on, and KNOW I'm working harder than them. Ha!

why would you be embarrassed about sweating? I don't get it.. I'm 24 yo male and I got to my university's gym and see nothing wrong with guys or girls sweating... It's more like a sign of a good workout...

I can see it being somewhat uncomfortable when out shopping or something, but I still wouldn't care one bit if the weather was hot... I would just see it as a natural thing.

Also try tye-dye shirts.  Laughing

I don't know how bad you are talking about when you are just out, but there is a condition called hyperhidrosis.  It is basically over active sweat glands.  Something worth researching if it is a big enough concern for you.  I used to sweat excessively under my arms (even when NOT exercising) so I did a self diagnosis and found an over the counter deod. made specifically for people with hyperhidrosis.   It cleared me up almost instantaneously and I haven't had any problems since.  I  only have to wear one shirt per day now and I can actually smell my deodorant!!!  Also, my shirts don't have a lingering unpleasant odor  that couldn't be washed out.  Talk to your doctor.  I know there are treatments out there, mine just needed the OTC deodorant stuff.  I'm not sure about backs.

Good luck!!

All I have to say is...you at the gym sweat baby sweat, id be embarrased if I was at the gym and not sweating. But if it bothers you that much definetly white or black shirts stay away from pretty colors :) gluck!

I bought new exercise clothes last night. One shirt and pants are black and the other is blue, but its microfiber and Im going to wear a tank underneath it. Im going to go try it out now on the treadmill. Thats for all the tips!

I know where you're coming from with the excessive sweating even when not working out. Once this summer I was riding the metro standing up, and sweating so much that I could feel it running down my legs (I was wearing a short dark skirt)- EW!! Social interactions are uncomfortable for me as well because I always have sweaty hands.

Printed tank tops are great, they let your armpits breath and don't show the sweat as badly. I also wear flip flops as much as possible, because feet release a lot of heat. Dark mini skirts of a heavier material work well for me (when I'm sitting, they don't crease as bad as lighter skirts). Finally, I always carry a travel size baby powder with me so I can freshen up throughout the day.

Thanks Queenmedia. I was thinking about trying some baby powder but I wasnt sure if it would help or not.

I also tried my new blue workout shirt on the treadmill today. I pushed myself pretty hard for 30 mins. The sweat did show up a little but I didnt wear the tank, so Im thinking it will be okay. And Im going to try to stop obsessing about how much I sweat at the gym and just focus on getting a good workout!!!

Just an update that I have been working out at the gym for a month now and have gotten over my fear of sweating!! When I leave the gym, my shirt is usually soaked but I no longer care because I have lost 7 lbs in the last month!

Yay! Glad to hear. And congrats on your loss!
