Sweeeeeets!!!! I'm out of control!!!!

Quote  |  Reply

Since Halloween I've been chipping away at sweets. Small candies, dark chocolate, office donuts, cookies when I'm making the kid's lunches... Last night was a friend's birthday, just had a sliver of pie... both the pumpkin AND the pecan... Got up at 3am and the only thing that was going to get me back to bed was a glass of milk and 6 cookies... I was doing really well keeping them off my pallet and so not craving. But since late October it's been full on Oompa-Loompa sugar boogie... I've been logging what I'm chipping and so not going over my calorie intake but the sugar is too much... It's really starting to piss me off!!

Any ideas of what I can do to clense my pallet so I'm not getting that sugar shaped hole in my face that just HAS to be filled. It's such a false sense of satisfaction, I hate those sweets!!!

I have the same issue with sweets... once I start, there's no turning back.

Have you tried keeping a few bags of sugar free candies around just in case?  The sugar free York peppermint patties taste almost exactly like the real thing, and you can eat 3 for just over 100 calories... so it wouldn't throw off your whole day.

I've found, eating a larger dinner helps curb the craving too.  And if you plan it right, it won't make you starve the rest of the day... I usually start with a 70 calorie soup-at-hand soup, then have a salad (usually around 50 cal for me... I like them plain), then a portion of chicken with mixed veggies or a potatoe (I try to keep it around 200-300 cal), and finish it off with a fat free fudge popsicle (usually 70 cal).  By the time I'm done, I'm so full I will turn down anything.

But as a rule of thumb, I keep low calorie sweet treats around the house... Fudge pops, Fruity popsicles, sugar free candies... and asked my roomates to hide their cookies and oreos.  =]
Good luck, hope you can stop the cravings!!!

I think most of us know your angst...the sugar cravings can be very frustrating. What seems to work for me is 'Out of sight, out of mind'...it's a cliche, but very true! Perhaps you could designate a special drawer/cabinet at home for the "junk"?

Imo, 100 calorie snacks make you crave more sugar. I think full fat and real sugar makes the cravings stop (at least for me it does!). For instance, I'll eat 1/4-1/2 a cup of peanutbutter-chocolate gelato and feel totally satisfied. When I'd have reduced fat/reduced sugar ice cream I'd usually eat a pint and feel gross, unsatisfied, and unhappy.

Also, I notice if I consume lots of protein I won't crave sweets as much. Whole eggs, peanut butter, nuts, seafood (shrimp, scallops, tuna, fish, etc.), beans, lean beef, cheese and yogurt are some good options.

Good luck!

It's a real crime that nuts and peanut butter have so much fat and calories per/oz because I do get satisfied when I eat them. But 2oz of nuts is over 300 cals! That's just not fair. My friend (who also struggles with an ED) brought with her some chocolate covered eatemame (soy beans) one night when we went out... That's just wrong Yell. They were like 200 cals for a 1/4 cup.

i've been on such a sugar trip. haha. I love love love sweets. just made a pumpkin pie today. In fact, it's still in the oven and the smell is amazing.

I suggest making your own treats. They taste so great and it gives you something to do! It's a win win situation. You also get to control the ingredients. Just have a serving or two, put a serving or two away and GIVE THE REST AWAY!! other people will think you are oh so sweet and thoughtful and you get your sugar fix.

i imagine you have tons of Halloween candy from your children, as do i.  it's very hard to fight that, so I'm actually looking into organizations that send candy to the troops.  a friend of mine that does not live in the same state told me that is what she is doing with her children's Halloween candy and i love that idea.  that way I'm teaching my children about doing good deeds and also feeling good myself for helping others (and myself for not eating it)!  we've had our fill of it...it's time for it to go.  holiday season in general is so hard....

what i do sometimes to help those sweet cravings....i drink a glass of chocolate milk.  prepared myself, so i don't have to add as much chocolate (unless it's a really bad craving Smile)  calorie wise, it's much less that what i would chose for a sweet option, and the calcium is good for me.

I find that if I eat enough fat my craving for sweets drops significantly. I have to get at least 30-40% of calories from fat for this to work, though. Also, if I'm going to fiend out on sugar I try to eat chocolate, the real stuff with fat in it, because the fat satiates a bit, so that I don't crash as hard blood sugar wise and I can also (sometimes) curb the crave early in...

Halloween candy is just trouble :) but if it's a regular sweet craving you might be deficient in serotonin, too. That happens with regular dieting, happens even worse with very low cal diets. So make sure you're eating enough healthy carbs...

Protein. Im a huge sweet monger when I dont get enough of it, and found that I had to stop my absolute vegetarianism in order to maintain my weight. Eating high-quality poultry has helped A LOT in the curbing of my sweet tooth, same with yogurt (plain european style with honey mixed in and eaten off the spoon you stirred the honey in with--tasty!) and cheese.

Haha, I took my candy to school to give to my students as rewards :P  Otherwise, Tootsie Roll would take on a whole new meaning...

I drink, drink, drink.  Wait, that sounds bad.  Okay, I *hydrate* ^_^;   I drink tea all day (no milk, no sugar, just plain), and if I'm not drinking tea, I'm drinking Crystal Lite.  I know a lot of people are against artificial sweeteners, but I simply don't like to drink plain water unless it's ice-cold, and I can't keep it that way and still have it on my desk.

I find that cuts the oral fixation, and the Crystal Lite works for the sugar craving.
