Hey, I'm wondering if it's okay to eat steamed sweet potato 3-4 days a week with dinner? Is this too much while I'm trying to lose some weight? I keep my portions in check, and I don't add anything to it--just plain ol' sweet potato.

Thanks!

Sweet potatoes are a good starchy vegetable with plenty of fibre.  As  long as you're weighing the amount you cook and counting it accurately, and as long as your total calorie intake for the day isn't too high you should be able to lose weight.

'There are no bad foods, only bad diets'.

I eat sweet potatos all the time, they are so good for you and very filling.  Just a warning though that most sweet potatos found in supermarkets are very large.  Most are 250-500 grams, making them 200-450 cals each so make sure you are measuring them.

I think you should eat sweet potatoes in moderation.  But when you do eat them, try to find organic ones!  The best I've ever had were New Jersey organic sweet potatoes I bought at EarthFare.  They look like regular potatoes inside (yellowish white, not red), but they are VERY sweet and delicious!

I have actually eaten these New Jersey's and I find them to be wonderful!

haha this topic made me smile. As a college student, I was trying to find things I could make in my dorm room.

So I bought loads of potatoes and sweet potatoes. I had them at least twice a day. Mine were quite small though so I usually had two. Sometimes I would eat one for a snack.

I never gained any weight on either potatoe. I would have the sweet potatoe plain, but sometimes if I was craving french fries I would put my yellow potatoe in the microwave, then when it was cooked, add a table spoon of ketchup and a little sea salt and a tsp. of olive oil! Yummy! tasted like french fries.

oh and sometimes I would go to the salad bar in the food area, buy a some bit of veggies, cook them, and throw them on top of my potatoe.

I love sweet potatoes! I eat them at least 2 times a week! I have not gain any weight from them. If you just alot them into your calorie intake for the day you'll be fine! I bake mine in the oven on 450 for 40 mins (I buy the small to medium ones) and then take it out of the skin and just mash it up with a fork with some salt and it's wonderful! The fiber in them keeps you full!

I LOVE sweet potatoes... baked with a little in-moderation-butter melted on top and sprinkled with cinnamon... now i'm hungry :)

I don't think it would be a problem having them even 7 days a week to be honest. A 114g sweet potato is about 100 cals. Well good in my opinion. And like gijane says there are no bad foods, maybe badly cooked foods and bad diets.

Sure you can have a sweet potato - They are incredibly healthy and if you eat the peel/casing (whatever you want to call it)... it loads up in fiber (granted if you don't eat it, you still get a hefty dose)... Make sure you don't negate the health benefits though by topping it with BUTTER and SUGAR... How about sprinkling it with pumpkin pie spices (& stevia) for a nice dessert.

Lately I have been incredibly obsessed with canned pumpkin puree in which I sprinkle with stevia & pumpkin pie spices - and sometimes mix with egg whites to make a pancake... You could most definitely do the same thing with sweet potato!

I found a recipe for sweet potato burgers.  Man, talk about an all around versatile food!

hey thanks for all the input. I get the medium sized potato, and between my sister and I, we don't eat the whole thing, so I think my portion is okay. I don't add butter or anything, just some pepper occasionally.

I believed sweet potatoes would come as a threat to a balanced diet. When coming to know long before that they're recommendable as a healthy item, i got all frenzy. I simply boil them and this crude state is definitely soothing. It becomes pasty when munching on it. This afternoon, i noted that a piece of today's boiled sweet potato were very stringy (full of fibre), a state i don't normally find... which indicates its old age. Inspite of that where the fibres are capable of sticking in between the teeth, i didn't dump it.

I don't see why eating sweet potato with your meals could be harmful... it is a food after all. I know people who eat 2 cheeseburgers everyday for lunch and somehow they're still alive and kicking... something is up with that, eh?? So, your sweet potato in comparison is a brilliant substitute :)

woah... 2 cheeseburgers a day? It's remarkable that it's got no adverse effect on those people. quite away from the natural order of consumption and body functioning. how very rare. Surprised

I went through a sweet potato stage for like six months where I had to have one every day...I somtimes ate it for breakfast if I wasn't able to have it for lunch. Granted I was maintaining...I didnt gain any weight so I doubt it would hinder you from losing weight. Just be realistic about the size of the potato. Sweet potatoes are awesome! Enjoy them
