okay so I need help to win an argument.  My friend keeps insisting that they are 2 different kinds of potato.  I always thought they were the same potato called by a different name.

Can anyone help settle this strange debate?

Thanks

Please see this link for the differences between sweet potatoes and yams, they are not even related species. Although where I live in the American South the two terms are used interchangeably.
