Sweet Success

By Sheila on Apr 26, 2010 12:00 PM in Success Stories

Restricting sweets, exercising and having the "I can DO this!" attitude went a long way towards P31wit's achievement of losing 35lbs.  She tells us about her dietary and physical fitness regimens, and advises people not to look for diets per se. It's better to go instead for a lifestyle change that can be followed wholeheartedly and successfully for life.

She contacted us through our Share Your Story feature, and provided the following answers to our questionnaire.

1. What made you decide to lose weight this time?

I was getting ready for a friends wedding and we took a picture, I looked at myself after it was printed and I said "that's it, I'm doing something about this".  So the next day I figured out how many months I should go off of sweets (since sweets are my thing), I decided to restrict sweets for 6 months and I promised myself I would not weigh myself for that time either. At first it was pretty hard but the Lord helped me through all the cravings and having to firmly say "no".

After the 6 months were up, I weighed in at 160 having lost 20lbs.  My Goal weight was 145 by May 4th, 2010 (a year from when I started this journey!) I have lost 35 lbs in a year and I took it slow and one day at a time!

I am now maintaining a healthy weight for my body, I have toned all areas of my body except my abs and that is my focus for right now.

2. What other "diets" (programs, products, plans, or services) had you tried in the past?

I did a program called First Place, which is a Christian diet program. Basically you just count calories and have devotional, this was sort of my inspiration for this "diet" that I did.  I say "diet" but truly I hoped that it was a new way of life.

3. What changes did you make to your usual diet, activity, lifestyle, and attitude?

I stopped eating sweets and drinking sodas. I started walking everyday except weekends and going to my local Curves (a women's fitness place) three times a week. I think the most important change I have made is making myself get up in the mornings and walk.  I love to walk but I hate getting up early to do it, but once I have done it, it makes the rest of the day go better and gives me strength and energy for my other workout routines.

4. How did Calorie Count help you to lose weight?

Calorie Count helped me be accountable for what I put in my body and helps me to realize that there are more calories in some things than you realize and they add up fast!

5. What was most challenging about losing weight?

Not being able to eat exactly what I felt like eating, especially when I wanted it.

6. How long did it take you to see results?

Until Thanksgiving of 2009, my sister wanted me to be her model for her website and for the first time I really realized I looked skinny in the pictures.  I couldn't believe how much weight I had lost!

7. When did you realize that you were a success?

When I put on a dress I wore when I was thirteen and it fit...WOW!

8. How do you prevent relapse?

I let myself have a cheat day on Saturday's.  I eat whatever I want but in moderation, it helps curb the cravings for the next week and it has seemed to work for me.

9. How has your life changed now that you've lost weight?

I'm able to play volleyball a lot easier and I'm faster than I was, I have more energy and I no longer feel like an old woman, I feel like I'm the 21 year old that I really am!

10. What tips do you have for other dieters?

  • Exercise!
  • When you fall down, make a push up out of it, you'll come out the
    better for it!
  • Have a buddy to do everything with, my sisters have been the ones
I talk to about all of my troubles whether diet, life or anything else.
  • Record everything, you don't realize how much you eat until you
    write it down!

Congratulations!

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." - Phillipians 4:13

"But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. " -  Romans 13:14

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." - 1 Cor. 10:31

Great job! Really encouraging story. I just started to restrict sweets 13 days ago. First days were really hard because 1. Sweets a my thing too, I was really addictive to chocolate  2. I am a student and most of the food in the campus store is snacks and sweets :( Whenever I feel hungry there is no choice of a healthy food :( 3. Too much stress while studying so I think of sweets as a healer

These reasons prevented me all the time. When I read that you could do this for 6 MONTHS. I felt that the strength of my will is not as strong as yours that's why I used to fail. Now I know what I want. Thank you a lot.

here is my question. How about other food restrictions? or restricting sweets was the main thing?

as you said you didn't weight yourself for 6 months. Why? How does this influence? I am asking because I am confused whether I should weight often or it is better to do the way you did.

Thank you a lot. Keep it up!

Wonderful job and congratulations - you look great.  I totally agree about the sweets - it's amazing what cutting sweets, or restricting sweets from your diet can do for you.  Keep up the good work.  I lost about 15 pounds a year ago and thought I had it all under control, but I stepped on the scale this morning and some of it has returned.  So I'm returned to counting calories, which is really eye opening.  Thank you Calorie Count for making it easier.

I'm am rally inspired!

Weight lose is a battle that has to be fought slowly

adank85 - slow is the way to go :) I hope you can too!!!

lazyking - I give all the glory to Christ Jesus My LORD...Thanks!

tomfran7 - wow, that last verse and the 2 Cor. 12:9-10 really helped me through those six months!!!

wcd_mylife - I am glad that I could encourage you, keep up the good work!!! As for your questions yes, sweets were just about the only thing I restricted, I would eat whatever I wanted but tried to do it in moderation. I did not weigh in for those six months because of my vanity (I hate to even say that, but it's the truth) I knew that I would not continue if I lost a little weight, because I would feel like I deserved a "break" or something. I wanted to leave it in God's hands and not mine!

bronco1970 - sometimes I wonder if sweets aren't the devil..lol...keep up the good work!!!

vet225 - I am glad to inspire you! Yes it is better to take it slow!

If any of you would like to be buddies, don't hesitate! :) I love to be encoureged and I would love to encourage you!!!

Awesome progress! Continued success in your journey!

hey girl you look amazingggggggg...no seriously your face is so much more defined....i have another 30 lbs to go..and i am hoping to lose it if not in 6 months...8 months...!!!

what type of exercises did you actually do at the gym?? i do cardio 40 minutes 5 days a week..and i am starting to feel like i still need to tone up and firm up with resistance training...so i have joined some group classes...!!!

anyway, great work girl.!!!!

You have reallyhelped me feel better about myself. I have lost 35 lbs the same way you have in the past year and I had wanted to lose 50 and thought that I wasn't working hard enough, but now i realize that 35 lbs is a HUGE accomplishment, and I am so glad that you and I have about the same kind of stories.

God has blessed you with wonderful sisters too! Have a great life!

Great job!!!  You look great!!!

fanaticalboutfitness - Thanks, Jesus is my continued sucess!!! Thank you for your encouragement!!!

shybrownie - Thank you! I walked daily (excluding Saturday and Sundays) did circuit/strength training, as low as 150 up to 300 crunches and extensive stretching...the walking a doing the crunches are what really toned me (I don't do 300 of the same kind but find different ones that I can do that tone different areas of the abdomine) Joining the group classes is a GREAT idea!!! I think your body gets used to certain exercises and you have to change your regime just so you can keep losing weight :)

driemcatchir - it really is a big accomplishment!!! Take it slow!!! I think thats the best way to get it off and keep it off!!!!

sfpokerpro - Thanks, it's only by the grace of Christ that I can do any of this!!! Thanks for the encouragement!!!!
