I swam for a year in high school, and while I don't know if I lost any weight, I was in really good shape! Swimming is great for building muscle, endurance, and it's easy on your joints. As for the losing weight part, I think if you are focusing on being in good shape and eating healthy, the weight loss will come.
Never heard of fat growing under skin cause of water sports...that doesn't really make much sense - look at serious swimmers - none of them have layers of fat anywhere. :-)

Any activity that gets your heart rate up will help you lose weight, and swimming is great exercise! So yes, swimming can help. and the water provides some resistance, which is why it is also good for toning.
That said, I read somewhere that losing weight/fat is 70% diet. So if you are swimming a lot but eating like crap, you will not get the results you want. I say this from experience - I have always been active in sports and at the gym, but I have been known to indulge in things like sweets or beer, which, as I get older have totally not helped!

swimming is a great cardio work-out! and, cardio burns the fat... but, as michelle54 said, you still have to eat well!

News to me LOL. I agree with all the postings above. Swimming is a good low impact resistance training + cardio combines. If you have the luxury to swim as part of your workout, by all means, do it!

You should probably have a snack soon after your swimming. 45 mins straight swimming - makes sense to me that you're hungry! :)
Maybe a protein bar, or cheese stick and apple or something.

swimming is probably the best workout. i joined it last yr as freshman and i am in water polo as well. did i lose weight? plenty, it acutally got me to a stable healthy weight. im also in good stable condition.
I do laps for 45 minutes 2-3 times per week and always eat a protein bar after on my walk home.
