Swimming (possibly an odd question...)
Hello all!
I haven't swam for about 10-15 years but would love to build up my confidence again and get better at it. My problem is that I wear glasses. I can't afford any prescription goggles or anything like that. I know it sounds weird but I don't know what to do with them - do I take them off and hope I don't bump into anything or do I leave them on and hope they don't end up at the bottom of the pool? Anyone else have this problem?
Vicky :o)
How bad is your vision? I probably wouldn't wear them if you can see well enough to know there is another person 10 feet in front of you.
I wear mine while I swim. Of course usually I am at the pool with grandkids and I need to be able to see them from across the pool. Without my glasses I wouldn't be able to.
So I do wear them, and I have never had a problem with them falling off. They do get water on them and it's annoying, but not as annoying as being blind.
I wear contacts and goggles.
Hmm...thank you for all your replies. My eye sight is quite bad, I think that for my first time at least, I will wear them into the pool. :D
If you are planning on actually swimming - as in face in water doing laps - then you shouldn't wear your glasses, just use goggles. Most lanes are indicated by a big black line on the bottom of the pool so you should be able to see that even without your glasses.
'm swimming with a Masters swim team, so my face is in the water constantly, and I'm trying to work flip turns back into my routine. So glasses on is not an option. I'm really blind as a bat (if you're really geeky, I'm a -6.00 prescription). I wear contacts under regular ol' goggles in the pool because my depth perception is really poor without my glasses. That, and I need to be able to read the clock and the coaching board.
If you're just doing laps on your own, and you're only moderately blind as a bat :), I'm sure you can forgo glasses all together and just go with goggles alone.
If you are really going to wear glasses in the pool, at least get one of those strap thingies that attach them to your head.
However, I say go blind. I have awful vision (also -6ish) and don't swim with glasses on. For laps, it should be perfectly fine. Just watch out in the ocean - I ran into the ocean once without realizing it was literally filled with clear jellyfish. Thankfully I didn't get stung - just grossed out.
My eyesights are around -4.5 ish. I'd never wear my glasses to swim. Water gets on your classes and you won't be able to see anything anyway. AND it would get in the way. Besides, you really won't have much trouble getting anywhere. You just have to squint real hard when you are opening your lock :D
Ok, cool. My eyes aren't that bad - only -3ish, which I thought was bad but know differently now! I shall definitely invest in a pair of goggles though and practice my squinting lol!
Thanks everyone :D
Sounds like you're around the same as me. I don't wear my glasses in the pool either and just squint like everyone else. I do really love my goggles though.
i do laps in contacts and goggles
if i didnt have contacts i think id do ok since theres usually big black lines on floor and crosses on the wall so id know when to flip
im - 4.5 and -4.0 - i think i cud deal with squinting
i ignore everyone anyways when im swimming laps hard to socialize with your head underwater
closest thing to meditation ive found :)
just go get in the pool again girl!
