struggs, I just popped over to look at your profile and noticed that you are a young lady who is at a healthy weight.  As such, I hope you are considering eliminating soft drinks from your diet for health reasons rather than wanting to lose more weight.

I know it's hard for you to focus on the long-term benefits of switching to water (such as you at age 30, 40, 50, etc.).  All I can do is restate what others have said, that switching to water WILL make a huge difference in your health.  At a time when childhood obesity is at an all-time high, why not become a healthy role model for your peers?  You've done a fantastic job at losing weight (171 to 125?).  Wonderful!  That alone sends a message to those in your age bracket that they to can lose weight if they give it a good try.  If they see you switching from soft drinks to water, then you're sending an even better message.

Keep up the good work and stay healthy!

Hi Stuggs, I never drank diet soda but did drink reg. soda, I quit over 15 years ago and haven't looked back.  My favorite drink is plain spring water (no sodium) I sometimes make a lemon aid with fresh lemons and a little sugar (sugar in the raw). For the most part i drink water only and love it.

OK, here is what i have seen since switching to water..... I feel much less hungry, my skin is much nicer and i look younger (from what i hear from everyone).  Basically water makes your skin very soft,  it is a natural appetite suppressant and you look and feel healthier, it's good for you and easy to switch over to!

Don't buy anything else and start drinking water, nice clean, fresh, cold, thirst-quenching water, soon you will not crave anything else, I promise you!

I've lost 9lbs since 1-6-08, most of it is due to CC, learning about food has been a blessing and I have only drank water, I did have a cappuccino a couple of times but it's definitely something i wouldn't do regularly.  Oh and I never get sick,  I don't know if drinking water has anything to do with it but it's nice to think so :)

Good luck and now go and have a glass of water with a lemon wedge on the side :) ~Linda

I too have been wanting to quite diet soda (I only drink one per day, but still). I notice there are many others here who need a bit of caffine fix. I would add that a 12 oz latte has some good points. Here's what calorie count says about shots of espresso.

Add to that 3/4 to 1 cup of nonfat milk and maybe a little flavoring and you've got a caffine fix hot or iced that isn't very high in calories and gives you the benefits of drinking milk. Maybe I'm talking myself into it but thought I'd throw that out there.

Through high school I drank tons of diet soda. In college I stopped, and really, it didn't make much of a difference for me. Now I drink mostly tea and water.

If you stop drinking diet soda, however, I would recommend having tea or coffee in the morning. A little bit of caffeine in the beginning of the day can boost your metabolism and help you burn more calories throughout the day. I would also recommend drinking very cold water: Your body will burn calories just by having to heat that water up to your normal body temperature.

So far I've been very unsuccessful in cutting out the diet sodas :(

At least you're trying.  Have you managed to at least cut back?

Have you tried what some people have suggested here by going to those individual sugar-free flavor packets that you can mix up in a bottle of water?  They aren't as good as switching to plain water but they are a tad better than soft drinks.

Keep your focus.  You can do it!!!

anything with bubbles causes the opposite of feeling full...it fills you stomach with air and slows digestion....

I used to drink regular Pepsi.  On average, probably two bottles/cans a day.  Switching to water took about 6 months.  I first went to diet.  Then to flavored waters.  Finally to bottled water.  I drink some tap water, too, but refrigerated, bottled tastes so much better.   To me.  Now, I have iced tea if I eat out, but otherwise all water.

Edit: I forgot to add that I've noticed a BIG improvement in my skin in the past year, which is about when I started going to all water.  However, better diet overall and exercise probably had as much to do with the improvement as did the water.

I have been trying to make the switch or at least drink 70% water and 30% pop.  It has been a really hard transfermation for me.... I have been doing it though.  In regards to feeling differently I'm not sure.  I notice that I have to go to the bathroom less.  I am hoping that I will notice a difference in my skin.  I have extremely dry skin every where but my face.  And I am hoping that it will help bring my weight down since I am stuck.  Plus it will save my money from my pop addiction.
Ugh I drink much too much diet coke, and I hate it because we all know the bad health affects of aspartame. blah. But since I have joined cc I have cut back, due to sodium. Wow. When you see your sodium intake, it makes me want to drink 15432 gallons of water!
Wow, as unhealthy as diet soda is... The idea of Diet Soda = formaldehyde poisoning is asinine and the signs of someone who obviously has never taken any advanced chem labs. Phenylalanine (comp of aspatarme) is broken down into methanol, which is broken down into formaldehyde, which is broken down into formic acid, and then into water and carbon dioxide... Not in your brain though (most humans struggle to digest milk, but i've yet to hear anyone that ended up with milk in the brain)...

Now for the real fun, a glass tomato of juice will produce about 5 times more methanol then the diet soda.. so by that logic tomato juice is going to cause MS? People need to stop buying into urban legends and know the facts...

Can diet soda be turned into toxic methanol levels? absolutely, but, you'd need to drink about 400 cans in say, 8 hours... I'm pretty sure i'd pop if I tried to drink 100 in 8 hours

If you are going to drink soda, drink the real stuff.  But water, over all, much much much better for you.  I drink almost 80 oz of water a day but I do have a little two litter of soda in my fridge for those Friday nights I feel like treating myself.

I don't understand how you can keep drinking that stuff when you know it's not good for you.  I mean, have you actually looked up all the words in the 'ingredient' list and figured out what they actually are?  I get a kick out of eating mostly natural foods and my big rule is, if you can't pronounce those words on the back of the box do you really want to put that in your body?

Could someone please tell me what good drinking diet sodas does for your body (besides the fact that you are obviously addicted).

My husband drank so many cokes when he was in high school (we're talking up to a 12 pack a day) that his body eventually rejected it and his doctor made him quit cold turkey, now if he has one drop of caffeine he has to go to the ER.  Again, I ask you, is that something you want in your body?

I don't buy that water 'fills you up.'  It actually makes my stomach feel empty and it just growls and churns like crazy, and I get that uncomfortable hungry feeling.  If I drink a ton of water after eating, I feel like it makes me hungrier faster - it could help process the food faster.  They tell people who have had gastric bypass surgery to not eat during/after a meal cause it pushes food through the stomach faster.  I still think its better than soda though.. I drink both.
