Am I taking in too less calories?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone, I would to like start saying that I'm new here and can't wait to see the end result of me. I am 14 year olds, and I weight 135 pounds, standing at 5.6.

I began my diet 3 days ago, I have been digesting just a bit over 800 calories everyday. I do around 3 hours of exercise everyday. Also, I drink 1L of green tea everyday.

1 hour jogging.

1 hour basketball

30minute of jumping rope

30minute of weight lifting and stretching.

Also I don't know if I'm eating the right food.

Everyday I eat, 2 Apple, 1sandwhich with 2 lettuce and 2 slice of extra lean turkey meat, 3 cups of skim milk, 3 sticks of celery, and a lot of water and tea. Today tho, I kinda got a little lazy and ate a baked potato and some grilled chicken, but I won't do that everyday :P I eat around 6 meals a day, consisting of all those, but in different order. So some days I might eat sandwhich in the morning and the veggies at night.

So am I taking in too less calories? or am I taking too much? or is it in the middle. Thanks everyone!

Hello

You are probably consuming too few calories for your age, height, weight and level of activity.

I would recommend that you research healthy dieting guidelines within this site. There are quite a few good resources available...

BMI Tool - This will tell you what a healthy weight is for your age and height. According to this tool, you are already at a healthy weight.

Based upon your current Body Mass Index (BMI) of 21.8, you are currently classed as at a healthy weight.

A healthy BMI for your gender and age is between 16 and 22.7 and a reasonable weight loss rate is 0.5-2 pounds a week.

http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/bmi.php

Burn Meter - This will tell you how many calories you burn in a day. You can also use the Activity Log to see exactly how many calories you are using each day. Be sure to include sleeping and resting activities as those burn calories as well.

http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/calories-bur ned.php

Calorie Target Tool - This will help you set your weight loss target. You can put in any weight goal you would like to achieve and adjust the dates of your weight goal.

http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/calories-goa l.php

I put in your information in 135lbs, 5'6" tall, 14 years old, "Very Active" and a target weight goal of 125. Below are the results I got

You should consume about 1,965 calories a day to reach your goal weight of 125 lbs This is at a reasonable weight loss average of 1 lbs per week, which should be reached by September 14, 2009.

Experts recommend weight loss at the rate of 0.5-2 lbs/week. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and activity level. It may vary slightly depending on other factors.

Generally, women should not consume any less than 1,200 calories per day, and men should not consume less than 1,500 calories per day.

To lose weight, you will need to create a calorie deficit - Burn more calories in a day than you consume. 500 calories under the number of calories you burn in a day will enable you to lose 1lb/week (1lb = 3500 calories/500 calories x 7days = 3500 calories).

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

How is this helpful?

You are already at a normal weight for your age and height.  According to the USDA calculator (link below) you are burning at least 2000 to 3000 calories a day.  Please see the information we've linked to learn what will happen if you don't nourish your body during this crucial period of growth.

Calorie-Count is all about healthy and sustainable weight management.   Please be aware that this website does not support pro-ana type posts or eating patterns and those posts will be deleted/locked.

Better she learn the safe and correct way to lose weight if that's what she wants to do than to get completely useless advice. It isn't called tough love...You gave her absolutely no useful information and probably made her feel like she shouldn't have asked the question in the first place. She should be able to ask and get a real answer, not a flippant comment. Remarks like that can do more harm than good.

Perhaps it wasn't me who had no life as a tween....

I'm a guy by the way..also, I don't think I'm at a good health, since I can still grab stomach fat.

I apologize for assuming you were female. The username should have probably clued me in:-)

Are you looking to get more definition in your abdominal area? Maybe it isn't the number of calories you're consuming, but the type of calories. It is also possible that your exercise routine that needs an adjustment. Your current activities are mostly cardio....Maybe you should try interval training for your cardio and do more weightlifting. I would also suggest a regimen that includes an adequate amount of core training.

The following exercises should help...you can research, choose and combine whichever ones you prefer, but remember to switch it up a little every six weeks or so...Abs exercises only need to account for 10 minutes of your overall workout.

    • Hanging leg raises
    • Hanging knee raises
    • Lying leg thrusts
    • Decline bench leg thrusts
    • Reverse crunches
    • Ab bicycles
    • Ab scissors
    • Stability ball crunches
    • Bench crunches
    • Alternating crunches
    • Weighted cable rope crunches
    • Ab wheel
    • Stability ball hip flexion
    • Abdominal vacuums Front squats
    • Renegade dumbbell rows

yah, I was doing a bit of of ab excercises about 2 weeks ago, but I stopped and decided to lose some of my tummy fat. Also my face is kinda chubby, so I guess, a diet would help me lose tummy fat and overall fat. Since I can't see abs if stomach fat is blocking it.

oh i apologize, i could've sworn the question stated was plain and simple (too much calories, too little, or in the middle) and all i did was state a fact.  this kid is young and being male, will most likely still grow so taking in less calories than a grown average size, sedentary woman seems a little absurd.  sorry if i offended anyone

Reducing your calorie intake too much could make you lose lean muscle mass which would be counter productive to your goal. I wouldn't say to stop doing your ab routine, just to adjust your diet so that it assists you in building additional lean muscle.

As far as your face being a little chubby, that usually takes care of itself as you age...Your face will typically thin out as you get older.

    Good luck!

Are you choosing to ignore the information I posted for you?  If so, I strongly suggest you read it all.  You are on a dangerous and unhealthy path and will cause permanent harm to your body if you continue to undereat.

We've seen many teens here who think they can "grab stomach fat" when it's just flexible, adolescent skin they are grabbing.  You are not overweight by a long shot and shouldn't be trying to lose.

I remind you of the Calorie Count Posting Guidelines. which you agree to every time you post.  We can not support those who choose to undereat.
