Does anyone lese have this problem:

You are a tall gal, and so all of your weight spreads out so much that you don't look very large and everyone always tells you that your'e crazy for wanting to diet, even though you KNOW you aren't healthy?

I swear i get that all the time, to the point where i don't want to admit that i'm trying to lose weight because of the stares!

I'd really like to start a a forum going, and even a group maybe, for tall people who want to lsoe weight. it's so hard finding a buddy your height with your weight, so let's help each other out!

I'll start.

Age: 18

Height: 5'10

Weight: 161 lbs

Goal Weight: 130lbs.

so i actually did good with snowballs, not eating them i mean (and we were too busy for me to try any workout things today), biut then i fell victim to the chinese place in the same shopping center. oops.

SInce i give myself one "normal" eating day a week (my off day from dieting) i'lljust make it today. I am disappointed with my willpower though.

And cellulite! i really want to try that. if anybody does it, let me know ho wit works out(though i can't imagine only one time would make much difference, is it supposed to be something you repeat?)

Original Post by cmiriah:

I really am not sure if i want to get all the way down to my goal weight, or just until i feel or look healthier, but either way, i want to maintain it once i get there.

As long as your within a normal BMI level, and eat healthy (I don't have the mentality that eating healthy forcibly needs to be called dieting) you will be healthy therefore, look and feel healthy. Oh and as for cellulite, drink lots of water, preferably 8 cups a day, which is what you should be drinking anyways, and the appearance of cellulite will lessen. Trust me I know for a fact that worked.

Good luck reaching your ideal weight!

Nice job with the snowballs!  Also, try not to give yourself too much grief over the  chinese food...I always try to remind myself that what's done is done and I can't change it...but what I CAN do is do better the next day.  I find when I try to think about not eating sweets (my weakness) for a whole week (much less a whole month), I kind of freak out.  But if I only think about TODAY, then it isn't so bad.  I know I am strong enough to resist for one day, and if I tell myself, "just for today" everyday, it isn't so bad.  :) Also, the one day a week thing is a great idea.  Mine is always the day I make homemade pizza (my husband loves it).  I always treat myself to a piece of candy that day as well!

Keep up the good work girls!

I'm feeling ya - at least though since we're tall if we're carrying a few extra pounds it is not too noticeable!! I've always thought if I'd been any shorter, I would have been 'fat' and opposed to the more 'healthy' way I was described (when my friends say 'healthy', they mean a little bit chubby, lol, it's their euphemism...!!! Oh the irony...)

Now that I've ditched 10ish extra pounds, people (especially my mum!) say I don't need to lose any weight. But truth be told I've been eating quite badly lately and have stopped going the the gym so much - so when I return to my routine I will probably lose a bit more!!

OH and I am by no means trying to be unhealthy, I'm 5"8 currently at 136.5ish pounds, my goal is 132 :)

Ps - for those of you concerned with cellulite - for some reason, I find elliptical training on a crosstrainer just makes it VANSIH! I find if I do that 3x a week it's GONE. Try it!!

i already drink a lot of water, but more can't hurt since i am not a huge fan of cellulite=) (though i might try the coffe grounds thing too, haha)

I am going to be extra good today, since i had chinese yesterday, and definately do some treadmill in my basement(sadly no gym this week, i'm too busy). But since i love the elliptical, when i do get into my gym-grove, i'm definately trying for 3x a week, haha.

Oh and being called "healthy"? Gosh, how many times have i heard that, haha.

Just chiming in as another tall-ie.  Well, sorta.  I used to be anyway before my kids made me shrink Tongue out

Through HS I was 5'10" and between 115-120.  Not that I cared, just every once in a while for curiosity's sake I would stand on the scale.  And I didn't have an eating disorder -- unless you count eating like a race horse a disorder (my mom actually took me to the Dr. at one point to have me checked for a tapeworm :-0 ).  I just simply had a high metabolism without athletics or anything.  In my mid-20s, my ideal weight landed between 125-130 (I'd made curves and a bum and wore a size 7/8 or so, which translates into a current 5/6 I think -- these vanity sizes make me crazy).  Now keep in mind, I still ate like a race horse, and except for working a lot and going out with friends, never worked out and never gave a damn about the scale.  My clothes fit and that was all good.  And I looked healthy, not super-skinny.  I had meat on my bones, my face was full, I had a lot of energy.  And I was 5'10".

I don't think a size 5/6 7/8 is underweight by any means, right?

Jumping forward to today, I'm now in my upper-mid-30s and everything's changed.  2 kids, wider hips, 1" shorter (hips spread a LOT when I had them) and a new ideal weight.  I'm 165-167 or so right now and it's NOT a pretty look on me.  I have rolls and hail damage and all kinds of things that should be unmentionable in public Surprised  No one can tell me that THAT is a healthy look.  As far as the weight goes, I'm just trying to fit back into a size 8 (which would have been a size 10 or so years ago -- I still have a lot of my old size 8s from years ago and it was impossible to fit into them when I was buying new size 8s 1 & 2 years ago).  But that size, with a weight between 135/140 looks okay on me.  My plan this go around is to gain way muscle though, as opposed to just aerobic workouts and losing fat, so I don't really know what weight I'll end up at.  Heck, me all lean and stuff may even wear a smaller size but weigh 150.  Who knows.

So the moral to the story is a) you can't judge a weight by it's height and b) stay the hell off the scales people!  It's just a number designed to make people crazy I think.  -- I'd weigh like what? 2 pounds on the moon but I'd still not be healthy (and on Mars I'd only be 18.5 years old but still have to color my hair ;-).  Forget the numbers and be HEALTHY.

And to all the growing girls out there (and yes, late teens to early 20s count as growing girls rather you want to believe it or not):  GROW.  Let your bodies become the women's bodies they want to be.  I'll never be 115-120 pounds ever again in my life, nor should I be.  It's great to be a woman and to LOOK like a woman, not a little girl.

I'm in this boat too--5' 9',  160.  And I just keep telling myself that a tone and trim 160 is better than the jiggly out of shape 160 that currently exists.  So that's what I'm going for.  Not so much weight loss (though the 140 lbs it says on my drivers lisence would be nice to see again), but just being in better shape.  And a flat tummy.Smile

I'm right there with you guys, people tell me every day how good I look and think I'm crazy if I even mention the word diet or exercise to lose weight. But they don't understand that I would like to do it for me to become healthier (which includes a healthier weight along with diet) not for everyone else. My current stats are:

Age: 22

Height: 5'9

Weight: 175

Goal Weight: 140-150

All through high school and up until I was 19 or 20 I was 130 pounds and ate everything in sight without ever gaining a pound. After getting a desk job (which not only causes me to be sedentary for the better part of the day but it also causes me to eat when I have no work to do), starting to move from an adolescent frame to an adult one, and what I assume is a metabolism that went from about 100 to 0 I blew up to a weight I never thought I would be in my entire life. Because of this I have decided I can't keep feeling sorry for myself and making excuses, I have to do something about it. I can't wear clothes that cover everything for the rest of my life, I like the summer weather far too much for that.

So, I am trying to start a workout plan along with trying to figure out how to eat healthier and beat the want to eat everything in sight like I used to.

Due to childhood health problems my althetic abilities are very limited right now but I would like to change that through slowly training myself. I have been alternating riding a stationary bike and going on a treadmill along with some light weight training and stretching.

If anyone has any suggestions that could help me with either exercise or eating better that would be awesome!

Alisha12886, for advice on how fitness activities, one would have to know about your childhood health problems.  Were they muscle related?  Asthma related?  Something else?  I have asthma and for me working out has actually been very important in increasing my lung capacity (even when I wasn't eating very well).  As for muscle related problems, the things that you are doing are perfect!  Other than that, I am not sure!  However, you have already taken a BIG step in the right direction!

As for your sedentary job, one thing you can do to cut down on cravings/eating when bored is to drink more water.  Sometimes the "hunger" you feel is actually "thirst".  Before snacking on something, try drinking a big glass of water.  I find that sometimes I wasn't actually hungry, I was just thirsty!

My health problems were always athsma related. I was always watching from the sidelines when I was younger rather than joining in so my lungs never got strong. Now that I'm in my 20's I have out grown the athsma but the lack of lung strength is something that is holding me back. I am hoping the direction I am going with help increase my lung capacity but I don't know anyone else with a similar problem so I have just been trying to figure it out on my own.

I have been trying water lately to curb my cravings and it seems to be helping somewhat but I am hoping to find some other strategies that might help as well. Or maybe it will just take a little adjusting to get me used to the change! Definitely not going to give up on trying it though that's for sure!

Thanks for the advice!

I guessi kinda am where some of you guysa are, where weight loss is nice, but just to be more toned and less flabby is what i want. I'm glad i'm not the only one who finds that a 130-50 lb goal is not "unhealthy". It really does just depend on the body.

Also, for alisha, for your job, definately eat a lot of water to cut down on pointless snacking. If you feel yourself grabbing for something ot put in your pmouth, water, even some flavored water is better than junk food. I always keep a 24oz propel (blueberry pomegranate) in my purse so i can be hydrated and it keeps me less hungry. Also, start brown-bagging it! especially now that summer is upon us, i have taken to packing a baggie with grapes, cherries and strawberries to much on, a much more nutritious snack. A lot of summer fruit feels like it's more snack than chore to eat. Try pomegranates as well. because of the small pods/seeds that you eat, you take more time to do so, and the more slowly you eat, the "fuller" you feel.

AND,haha, i feel long winded, there are simple things you can do at your job that help. If you need to go down the hall for something, do lunges, even find a partner to do it with you, so you don't feel self-conscious. While your sitting, contract your butt(funny i know) and hold for a few seconds before releasing. If you do these enough, it really does make a difference.

My asthma was never so bad that I had to sit on the sidelines, but it definitely did inhibit my ability to play extremely competitive sports.  I can sort of empathize with you.  In any case, you are going in the right direction.  In the past when I have worked out, I could definitely feel the difference in my lung capacity (and see the results on the spirometry test at my allergist's office).  One thing that you might want to try is learning to breath through your diaphragm (the muscle at the bottom of your rib cage).  It is the way professional singers breath and I have read that it can really help with asthma.  It might not be true, but it would definitely not hurt to try.

Good luck!

So the article I read about the cellulite says to repeat weekly for three months you should see a dramatic change I DUNNO!! lol I am willing to try anything shoot If I have to wrap my legs daily I will !!! Damn shame

I have done it once so far and took a pic before... I will add it to my profile if it works after a month or so...

STAY MOTIVATED LADIES!!! :)

Cmiriah... Yea, I have been trying to stand as much as I can and walk around the office as much as possible. Plus I have put any food (mostly granola bars and fruit in case I really do need something) in the kitchen and no where near my desk so that I have to make a conscious decision to go get it instead of drinking some water that is right there.

Kaetlynm... I am hoping that with a little time I will slowly start to feel the difference in my breathing, it definitely helps to have someone else who knows what it's like to have to build that strength up. Hopefully I will start seeing an improvement soon, that would be a great motivator to push further through.

Thanks fo the advice!!!

Micki,

Definitely keep us posted on how that works! I feel like I have tried a million things and nothing seems to have worked for my thighs! Ugh! Good Luck!!!

Alisha,

I work at a sit down job and have gained 30 lbs that's why i am going this program!! I started a "MOVE" group at work and about 6 of us to walk and go up and down the stairs and lunges things like that MWF and core on T & TH you should see if you can do something like this during lunch. not sure what your work is like but it will help to also get a ball and sit on that all day and do sit up through out the day!!

I have lost 5 lbs in a week from doing all of this and counting my calories. I hope to lose my 30 lbs in no time!

YOU CAN DO IT

We are all here to support eachother; Good Luck!

Alisha, i really hope your asthma gets better as you get in shape it reall is amazing how many problems get better just by making these changes in your life.

Micki, definately keep us posted on the cellulite. I think i will do the same thing, take pictures before, and maybe every week or so to see the improvement, with my thighs and weight in general. and wow! 5 lbs in a week is really really good! I'm hoping for 1 or two, haha. I actually want to do a mid-week weigh in tonight, just to be nosy and see if i lost anything:)

ATTENTION:

Glad to see so many replies:) I fele like a proud mama, haha.

Should i go ahead and make an actual "group" and move ourselves out of the forum? Or should we keep this format? Though we could always still keep the forum active for "recruiting" but have a group as well.

I was thinking that in the group we could at least have private forums, with different topics for Weigh-ins, Tips, Recipes, Welcomes, General Talk and whatnot, but it's you guys who make the group:) so what do you think?

I think the group is a great idea!
