Taro and Jicama?

Quote  |  Reply

I recently went to an asian market and bought some vegetables I had never tried before. These included taro, jicama, and daikon.

I've tried the jicama raw and in fried rice. I didn't like it raw.

Does anyone have suggestions of how to prepare/serve these or any good recipes using them?

I don't like Jicama raw either, unless it's with some kind of dip.  I find that adding lemon juice and chili pepper does make it taste good, though, if you're looking for a low-calorie option.

I love using daikon in Asian soups and taro in beef braises.  You can also make dim sum style taro or radish cakes, if you're not too scared of oil.  And if you're really ambitious, maybe try making your own taro ice cream (to die for!)

I'm not sure about taro or daikon, but I love jicama.

I like it in tuna salad with lime juice, carrots, fresh cilantro, and tomato.  No mayo.

i like to think of jicama as a mild kinda of apple. that being said, it's awesome when you chop some up into a bowl, then add some mango to the same bowl and let the jicama marinate in the magoes juices. they taste awesome together.

you can pickle daikon (or just add some salt and vinegar), or put it in soup

I tried the lemon juice and chili, but I still can't stand raw jicama. But cooking it changes the taste and I love it just plain and stir fried. (weird)

The daikon was just way too bitter no matter what I did with it, but I'll see if I can find some dim sum recipes using taro. I love taro ice cream, but that's just too many calories (I know me, I would eat way too much of it).

you may have found a bad daikon. usually it has a pretty mild taste, but every now and then you can get a really bitter one. try again, because its so awesome and low cal and wonderful

Thanks. I'd never tried it before so I thought that was just how it tasted. I'll definitely give it another try.
