Tasti De-lite Help

Quote  |  Reply
Hi Everyone!

I have been calorie counting for about a year now and have really worked myself down to a weight that I am comfortable maintaining (and if I lose more weight hooray, but its not a necessity).  I have been maintaining this weight for many months and I'm happy and satisfied doing so.

I comfortably eat approx 1400 calories per day, and 3-4 days of the week about 200 of those calories come from the medium-sized Tasti De-lite I eat as my dessert.

All I know about Tasti De-lite I know from their website.  They are a New York City-based company, and the stuff is practically just flavored whipped air.  Doesnt provide ANY sort of nutritional value and I know this, but it tastes great, takes a very long time for me to eat (eliminates my urge to binge at night), and fits in well with my caloric intake and maintainence.

According to the website, depending on the flavor, the stuff is 14-17 calories per ounce.  3-4 times a week I get a medium (8oz), so at worst, I'm consuming approximately 150 calories (I have also considered that the tasti delight girl does not actually measure me out 8 oz, and I've allowed for this as well).

So here's my question: Does anyone know anything about Tasti De-light that would make me want to reconsider how much I eat it?  I mean I know that too much of anything is not good for you, and like I said it is completely built into my daily caloric intake and I have been doing a great job maintaining, but is there anything out there about the stuff that I should know about??  It dawned on me last night that if there is a negative thing about it (which I cant seem to find, hence the post), I am in trouble cause I eat it so much!

Thanks!

I don't know but I just went and drooled all over their website. I'm so sad there isn't one near me. It IS on my driving route beween college and home, so I will probably stop there on my next drive. Their flavors look really good.

It really is remarkable stuff.  It seems too good to be true.  Thats why I'm so curious....I guess actually there is a bad thing about it though...it costs me 3.75 each time I go.  So aside from hurting my wallet, what else is wrong with it?  I really need to know.

My favorite flavors so far are fluffer nutter and red velvet.  The place near me has 4 flavors only each day but they change every day.  I am obsessed.

Hi alh -

I live in NYC too and used to eat this stuff almost every day in the summer and like you, I questioned how many calories I was actually eating. I found these links:

They are all interesting articles. I basically limited eating it because I cannot find exactly what is IN it. I assume it's a lot of artificial flavors/colors and I didn't want to keep putting that in my body. But it is a nice treat!

I eat Tasti-d all the time but am under the impression it's actually really sort of horrible for you. Not calorie wise, just ingredient wise. I had an email conversation with the Calorie Counter venix who knows A LOT about food and ingredients (she is a raw foodist) and she basically told me that their main formulation is just an emusification of milk, corn syrup, and a number of vegetable gums.  They're achieving their low-calorie-ness by reducing the amount of milk fat and replacing it with vegetable emulsifiers. That's not bad in and of itself apparently. What is concerning in it is the corn syrup. There's a direct correlation between the rise in consumption of corn syrup (high fructose or not) and the rise in diabetes and high blood pressure. So if that's a concern to you you might want to try and find another dessert for some days of the week. Because this concerned me, I only eat Tasti-d once a week or less and instead eat Skinny Cow ice creams (from 100-180 calories), jello (10 cals per single serve cup) and also real fruit pops (30 cals a piece). And lest not forget the clementine oranges so widely available these days.
