I love love love fish.  I especially love canned tuna because it's really quick and easy and there's 15g protein and 175 calories in a can.  I usually mix it with relish or with soy sauce for some flavor.  The thing is I have heard that fish has quite a high mercury content and I'm afraid that if I continue to use this as a staple it might do some icky things to my body.  So my question is, are there any foods out there that are as high in protein and as low in calories?  Preferably something easy to prepare because I'm looking for more of a quick lunch than a dinner.  Any ideas?  Also, does anyone know anything more about the amount of mercury in tuna and how much is too much?

Canned chicken is a great alternative.  I've eaten tons of canned tuna in my day, and I've yet to see any ill effects - I think the mercury warnings are mostly for young children and pregnant women.

Are you sure that's all the protein in your tuna? Mine is about 140 cals in a can and over 25g protein (that's in 130g tuna)
Tilapia is a wonderful fish high in protein and low in calories, no mercury issues with it either...They (articles) say 1-2 servings of tuna a week is okay.
I agree with the canned chicken, its just like canned tuna, only its chicken!  You can prepare it the same way.  Its more expensive, though.

The mercury warnings ARE just for children and pregnant women. My boyfriend absolutely loves tuna and the protein it gives him so I did some research on it. I wouldn't recomend eating it every day of the week, but a few days isnt bad. Another fish I love... salmon. I know Walmart has these frozen salmon patties that are covered in basil, tomato and cheese seasoning... only like 180 calories per salmon steak! You just pop them from the freezer into the oven for 20 minutes. They are delicious and healthy :)

Hope this helps.

- Canned Sardines

- Canned Mackerel

- Canned Salmon

- Canned Shrimp

- Canned Crab

- Canned Clams

- Canned Octopus

- Frozen Cod/Tilipia/Mahi Mahi/ Salmon/Halibut

** All of these are great alternatives for tuna but I wouldn't cut out Tuna completely because despite being "high" in mercury it is still very good for you!

(Canned Salmon & Mackerel are amazing in my opinion & Sardines come in 3rd for sure!)

I love canned salmon and canned mackerel. . .I am a huge lover of fish, the only reason I don't eat it everyday is my daughter. . .I go into the supermarket and I loose my mind at the fish counter, with all the selections. . .ummm sooo good!!! I don't eat tuna that much because I don't know how to fix it. . . other than lemon juice, dill relish, and a little mayo. . . .I love canned crab, it can be costly though, if you get the pound can for about $8.00 or $9.00 you can get several servings out of it. I have never been concerned about the mercury. . .because all the health magazines say; eat fish
