Good day to everyone. I am a 31 year old 6th grade teacher from Texas. I am trying to loose around 40 lbs and I only started at the first of the year. I think that it is important for us teachers to stick together for support. If anyone out there, any age, any gender, wants to lets start being there for each other.
Teachers Unite
I am not a teacher, but I commend you on your dedication to teaching not only school lessons, but life lessons, to our youth.
I am sure once you spend a few minutes poking around the forums you will find plenty of support and other teachers too :)
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Please allow me to join! I was logging in my snack and lunch during a break when I noticed your post.
I'm a 44 year old female who teaches first grade. Like you I joined on Jan. 1, 2008. To my amazement, 15 pounds have fallen off like magic. I'm eating 1550 calories a day and burning 2500. Boy, oh boy do I hate to think of how many calories have been going into my mouth before I started counting them. Just the wine and cheese as a snack would have been almost 1000 calories alone!Living just above the Napa Valley, I still have 3 oz of red wine with dinner, it's the life style here!
Please feel free to add me to your buddy list if you are a teacher making positive life style changes.

I'm a music teacher in Virginia! I have to lose 30 pounds, and my goal is to get it off before i go to a high school friend's wedding in October. I'm into the slow but steady approach, eating lots of vegetables and good nutrition.
Way to go Mgrondin! You sound like you're making very healthy changes in your eating habits!
What are you favorite vegetables? Right now i'm hooked on baby greens, spinach, baby carrots, broccoli, and sugar snap peas.
At the moment we are eating a LOT of collards and a LOT of kale. I did make some very good spinach with ginger and sesame oil the other day. My stepmother is a nutritionist, so I had a really good foundation growing up but I guess when I got on my own for the first time I sort of rebelled. Now that I am married I'm trying to get me and my husband on track.
I think its extra hard when you're a teacher. In general teachers have a mentality of putting other people first, and so often we take on so many extra responsibilities and time commitments. Most teachers I know feel guilty when they take time out for themselves, and eating well requires a certain amount of time.
As I try to lose the weight I am also working on committing myself one hundred percent to my students during the day, and one hundred percent to myself and my family after I leave.
Hooray for another music person!
If I recall correctly, my junior year was the WORST. Good luck!
oh please don't say that!
This college thing is hard enough
:)
Do reading specialists count? I taught third grade for years, but made the switch to "intervention" when I got my master's degree in Reading. I've been on this site since September and have lost 20 lbs-- which was my goal. I wasn't what anyone would have called fat, but I was at the upside of my BMI range. And the upward trend had me worried. I found that just by reducing calories and a little tweaking of exercise it came off steadily and painlessly!
I know that a lot of us have overcommitment disease, BUT one UPSIDE of our profession is the lunch time frame. We get, what 30 minutes duty free lunch... where precicely can you get to, order, be served, eat and pay in a 30 minute span? So really, what I've found is if I pack a good lunch in the morning (when my resolve is still strong, and the memory of the scale is on my mind!) I'm TRAPPED with it. Yes we have snacks in the vending machine, and there's always the option of a school lunch (if you dare), but for me, this has been a LIFESAVER! Yeay teachers!
Hi I work in a UK school as Senior Science Technician, its like a Teacher but I can walk out of classrooms whenever I want!
Does anyone else find the staffroom a nightmare place for Goodies? Everytime I go in there its masses of either cakes, biscuits or crisps! I try and avoid the place during break!
Anyway, good luck all =)
STAFF ROOMS ARE DOUBLE TROUBLE!
The "treats"The first week after Christmas break was a nightmare. Toffee, peanut brittle, cookies, enchilada loaded with cheese, and chocolates filled the table as everyone tried to rid their homes of any tempting left overs. This week it was all the left overs from a bridal shower, pastries, a raspberry jelly roll and chocolate dipped cookies. The place is a mine field. I've not had one bite of ANY of it. None of it is going to nourish my body. None is going to remove the stress of the day.
Yesterday I walked up to the jelly roll, cake and cookies on the table. I looked at them and knew what each one tasted like. None of them taste good enough to make me tempted. The loss of 17 pounds tastes so much sweeter! I then walked over to the vending machine (without money) to see if I felt the same way about all those salty snacks. Not one thing in that machine would be a good source of protein, vitamins, fiber, or minerals. I don't select to pay high prices for junk that is of no use to me whatsoever!
The "emotional drain"Beware of those who use the staff room to vent, talk students or other staff members down, or spread gossip. When you are emotionally stained, it's very easy to be tempted to snack mindlessly or run to "comfort food." Sometimes one has to show up or risk being the target of the sharp tongues. Sometimes it's better to just eat quickly in your classroom after taking a brisk walk. ( Yes, I am counting the days until the black hearted witch who stirs trouble for all on our staff finally retires!)
Count me in! I'm now a Special ed. teacher, previously taught k-1 for twelve years. I am 5'6" and need to lose a good 30 pounds. I've been a member since the first of the year, and lost 6 lbs. so far....
I totally agree that teachers lounges are the WORST place ever (when dieting)! I no longer have a 'home school' so I don't get trapped in the lounge eating the junk food laying around.
When I lost a lot of weight a few years ago, my class did the healthy eating with me. We had healthy snacks, no sugar in the classroom etc. The kids really got into it, and learned a lot in the process....moving to a new area two years ago packed the pounds back on, so now I'm doing it on my own.
Good to meet everyone!
What are the two most beautiful words a teacher can here ar 6:00 a. m. ? SNOW DAY!
