a teen in a bid of confusion...

Quote  |  Reply

alright, so...to give a brief preview of my past, i went anorexic 3 years back, got down to 50 pounds and was hospitalized. Now I am 15 (sixteen in 2 months) and 95 pounds, 5'2. I work out every other day for about 90 minutes. I run on the other days for about 40 minutes. I have a normal period. I am happy with my body but a bit worried when it comes to calories and the amount i see others eat. I eat about 1,300 calories a day. Any more and I gain a lot. My mother has a hypoactive thyroid, does this have anything to do with this calorie thing? Am i doomed to low calories because of a damaged metabolizm from my anorexia.? am I still anorexic? I also tend to retain lots of water and get constipated. My stomach is bloated a lot.  (I've been asked if I'm pregnant before), not the most complimenting thing from your boyfriend. My diet isn't all that great. lots of cereal, sandwitches, donutes and maceroni. My mom is an alchoholic and my dad left years ago, so since I'm pretty much the house income, buying healthy isn't top priotity as much as whatever's cheap. I know this is a lot but I'm not sure where to turn or what to do...thanks for your help, it's really appreciated. :)

Yes, unfortunately you're still suffering from an eating disorder.  You eat far too little for someone your age & size and you're overexercising.  You seem frightened to gain weight even though, at 15, your body has at least 5 years of growing left to do - which naturally involves weight-gain.   You technically scrape into the definition of a healthy weight  for a 15 year-old right now but if you don't gain weight over the next year or three you'd be classed as clinically underweight.   Medical problems are likely and I'd be surprised, for example, if you got periods....  Doing a lot of vigorous exercise when your body is in a weakened state could put you at risk of a heart-attack.

The website below will tell you that someone with your stats who is active for an hour or more a day needs about 2600 cals a day to grow strongly, be well-nourished and healthy.  Double what you currently take in.   If you live on starchy foods like white bread sandwiches and macaroni then you will be constipated and bloated..... you need to eat more fruit and vegetables as well so that you're getting more fibre.... plus other things like meat, fish, dairy products.... more balance.

Do talk to someone about your problem.  Is there a teacher at school that you could confide in?  Could you see your doctor?   If your mother is an unfit parent, if you're living in poverty and if you're being neglected as a result then you'd probably benefit from contacting Social Services.

is there a Winco supermarket where you live? I'm super broke as well, but Winco or Foodmaxx has whole grain bread for cheap and if you eat cereal, eat frosted mini wheats, cuz they are sweet and filling with fiber and vit. good stuff. Plus veggies and fruit is about the cheapest food you can buy. But anerexia is a disease much like drug addiction and your most likely going to stuggle with it for the rest of you life, but it can only get easier right! I know how you feel though, my bf just told me i look "tired" dont you hate it! Also a tummy that pokes out is a classic sign of malnurishment, so try eating better, cheaper (carls jr. has salad for like a buck fifty) I didnt think it was possible to find healthy food cheap, but look up places like Winco/foodmaxx, they also have food in bulk for cheap, like whole wheat pasta.

I don't really know much about damaged metabolisms, but I do know that carbs might be what's causing the water retention and bloating. All I can say is you'll need to cut out a lot of the macaroni, avoid white bread, donuts, and the cereal. Find foods that are low carbs, and try to include a lot of vegetables and fruits.

That's the best I can do.. sorry
