teen starting over: foods you eat :)

Quote  |  Reply
i used to be on track with my diet and my healthy lifestyle. then, i developed bulimia :P it seriously ruined a lot. after getting over this, and i still to this day, have constant binges when i go downstairs to 'snack.' it is always when no one is around and i no longer purge anything i eat. unfortunately it has caused me to gain a lot of weight back.

so i wanted to start a clean slate and lose weight in a healthy manner. i was wondering what 1) healthy foods you eat 2) how to avoid binges and 3) healthy snacks that would fill me up and not lead to these binges.

if you even read this far and are going to reply, wow i love you :) asdfjkl; xoxo

i like to have okra &eggs. bread tune &fat free cheese. before you binge have a whole cucumber &glass of water. it helps :)

I personally eat mostly of these foods:

Oatmeal

Apples

Carrots

Soups

Salads

Oatmeal is terrific, as are apples, oranges, bananas, tuna, whole wheat bread,  kashi chewy bars, carrots and peanut butter in moderation.

One of my favorites is Clementines. You can eat like 3 of them, and that's around 100 calories of sweet satisfying juicyness.

I love them.

My boyfriend works at a produce warehouse which is AWESOME. Because he brings home tons and tons of fruit and veggies. I get to try new produce I have never had all the time. So try new fruits and veggies! You might find stuff you really enjoy. My new favorite is mango in fat free cottage cheese. And tomatoes in low fat cream cheese with grilled chicken breast in a low fat wrap.

Healthy foods I eat alot of are:

Raw fish. I am a sushi junkie.

chicken breast (no skin)

soups (canned or restaurant) I love Panera's soups

Village Hearth light wheat bread (it tastes like regular bread even better!)

Juicy Juicy

Skim Milk (of course)

Chicken Fajitas (theres lots of recipes on here for low fat ones)

Reduced Fat Jif Peanut Butter

Little Debbie 100 calorie packs

Light Ruffles

AND LOTS AND LOTS OF HUMMMMMMMUS!

I'll add more later if I can think of more!

1) Healthy foods I eat?

I love roast chicken - skin or otherwise, seasoning or otherwise. I also eat a lot of tuna and salmon. I don't really eat red meats very often.

I eat the slightest amount of margarine on toast and never eat it on sandwiches. I eat pasta a lot - usually with pesto sauce - and I love boiled and jacket potatos.

I eat fruit and vegetables obviously, although the only fruit I really like is bananas ... when I'm making gravy I pour some of the liquid from the vegetables into the gravy because then I'm not losing all the good stuff from the vegetables.

I do like eggs but I'm on strike from eating them until my mother stops buying them from caged hens. When I do eat eggs, I eat them scrambled or boiled. Ocassionaly fried in very low fat / low amount of cooking oil. Rapseed (sp?) oil I think it is - my mother buys it, heh.

My treat kind of thing would be garlic bread and cheese - I could live on the stuff. And I love beef lasagne.

A way to eat healthily is to just simply learn how to cook. I'm learning and it's making me eat healthier automatically.

Oh and I drink semi-skimmed milk (when I do drink it ...) because skimmed milk although lower in calories, has been processed so much that it's lost a lot of it's goodness.

2) To stop binging, don't deny yourself. The more you say to yourself "no I can't eat this" the more you'll want it and the more chance you're going to binge and feel guilty after. If you want lets say, a chocolate bar - have a chocolate bar, just make sure it's a small amount and you work it into your daily amount of calories.

3) Healthy snacks? Well fruit/vegetables - celery, mandarine, apples, bananas, tomatos etc, all depending on what you like. I also used to eat prawns - baby ones. I dunno what happened to that actually ...

Nuts are also healthy depending on how much you eat.

I put salsa on everything!!! Scrambled eggs (made with egg whites of course), chicken, and dip veggies in it. It makes everything extremely flavorful without adding a lot of calories.

To control portions whenever you snack put everything your going to eat on a plate, don't just snack from the bag.

#1: Veggies are mother nature's gift to us. Learn to love them and snack on them any time you are hungry. Most veggies, such as carrots and tomatoes, have a very small amount of calories and don't count for calories. (What my nutrisionist said). #2: I found out this year that I have a sensitivity to wheat and dairy, otherwise known as anything good. If you drop one of these completly from your diet, you'll lose LOTS of weight, trust me. I have to binge just to keep a normal weight. (Not saying do that). Then, after you get to your gw, bring back in dairy and/or wheat. #3: Avoiding binges is tough, I understand. Since I starved myself for a year, all I do is binge. Good ways that I have used to avoide binging is one, veggies and two, occupy yourself with an activity and a glass of hot tea or water. Activities can include a nice walk around the block, doing some laundry, checking your e-mails, washing dishes, or even watching an excersise tape and doing the workout. #4: Ditto to the soup idea that sour_sips said. Soup is THE BEST. (Good kind is Amy's Organic Garden Vegetable, only 120 calories per can.) (Sorry for any misspelled words).
Im in the same boat you are and honestly the best thing you can do is to totally get rid of every bad food in your house. Seriously my whole house is nothing but fruits, fatfree yoghurt and vegetables. You should try to avoid keeping anything high calorie until you can handle it i think
if u feel like your going to binge chew on a peice of gum instead make sure its sugar free though :p
heyy i can totally relate to you. except i was never buliemic; i severly restricted myself and screwed up my metabolism, developed 'anorexic' thoughts. all that not-fun stuff.

anyway food to avoid binges:
-apples!!
-quaker mini rice cakes. i never bought them because the commercials annoyed me haha but they're surprisingly good.
-salads.  make it really pretty and take the time to cut up carrots, cucumbers, etc.  it takes a lot of time and makes you feel healthy
-blow pops
-low cal cereal

foods that trigger binges for me:
-chocolate
-ice cream
-hot chocolate
-peanut butter!!!!
-whipped cream
-cheese
Heyy gurl. I used to have the same problem as you...i would go to the kitchen just to get snack and end up binging almost everyday. but i have been binge free for 3 weeks now!:)

k so healthy foods: vegetables, fruits, strawberries, fat free coolwhip, peanut butter, honey, la tortilla factory tortillas, eggs, nuts, chili, black beans, homemade pita chips, hummus, 2% milk mexican shredded cheese, reduced fat swiss cheese, light bread whole wheat, almond breeze, skim milk, oatmeal

avoiding binges: never eat food out of the box. always put them in small plates and take your food AWAY From the kitchen so that once you are done, your done. Binging has alot to do with your state of mind and willpower in my opinion!if you make a decision to NOT binge, and you are set on not binging, then choose what you will eat, and STICk to it. you can do it! trust me.

healthy snacks to fill you up: wellll you can choose many of the ones from the first question :) but some good ones are whole wheat toast with pb and honey, pita chips or whole wheat pita dipped in hummus, quesidillas, quaker weight control oatmeal, edamame, baby carrots, strawberries in ff cool whip like strawberries n ceam, sandwiches and salads

hey.. i am in the same boat (well, was).

The foods i normally eat:

-Fruit

-Veggies

-Diet softdrink, diet cordial, soy milk (fat free), water.

-Wholegrain bread, wholegrain pasta, brown rice etc.

-Tofu (sometimes), beans, lentils.

To avoid binges:

-Do not put urself in that situation; keep urself busy. if u feel like ur going to binge, go for a walk, call someone, surround urself with ppl.

-Get a bowl, fill it with fruit/veg: binge on that.

-Drink water.. lotsa water

:) hope i helped

A good food to have around to snack on would be pickles... about 5 calories a spear, crunchy, satisfying.

On Not Binging:

I'm a recovering anorexic and so i kind of understand about the binging.  Once i started eating again sometimes i'd go crazy and eat WAY too much because i just realized how starving i really was. Anyway, something that helped me stop was recognizing the foods that set off a binge.  For me, peanut butter was a big one. Once i recognized this as a binge food, i allow myself to have two tablespoons of it every single day. Since i no longer am denying myself the food, it stops being a special treat.  And since there's not much special about it-it doesn't make me freak out and eat the whole jar in one sitting.  I'd suggest trying that with the foods that set off your binges.  Good luck! and much love,

 ~Jess
