Weight Loss
Moderators: duke3522, devilish_patsy, topanga1485, nycgirl, spoiled_candy, cmillington, coach_k Who do you tell about your diet???
Do you consider it "motivation" to tell other people about your diet??? If so, who do you tell??? Or would you rather wait until they NOTICE results?
So anyways, I work at a coffee shop right now trying to put myself through college. There's TONS of junk food there and I'm wondering wether or not I should tell my co-workers about my diet? Do you think they'll motivate me? Or discourage me?? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

I would tell them. If they don't know then you won't feel so bad about cheating now and then but if they know and they see you grabbing for that cookie on the rack then it will make you feel guilty and not eat it? Does that make sense?
Yeah i say tell them for sure. I've told as many people as I can think of. I don't want to look like a fool so it's motivating!
Good luck
Good luck
It depends on the people... I find it a personal thing that I don't like to talk about and by telling people I'm on a "diet" would make me more self-conscience and just want to forget it... but that's probably because all of my friends are skinny and eat w/e they want... the people in my direct family are the only ones who know because they see me daily (I'm 17)... but I figure no one else needs to know because they either won't care or will only discourage or throw me off
I've personally told the people that are around me the most... my roommates, close coworkers, etc. They do help motivate me and are supportive and excited with updates. Letting them know helped in terms of not pushing junk food onto me, as well as knowing the reason I have suddenly started eating "rabbit food" as a coworker calls it.
I have not told my extended family, though many of them have mentioned they're trying to lose weight as well (we're all very close). But with them I like to give them the element of surprise; at Christmas I shocked them with a short hairstyle, Easter I would like to shock them with a smaller body.
Ultimately, it's up to you whether you tell your coworkers, but in my case it really has helped me.

alwayzfreetobeme. . .I know EXACTLY how you feel. I'm 18. . .and all my friends are skinny little barbies who eat whatever they want. I know it seems sort of imature, but I feel a little self concious about the fact that I'm on a diet. I feel like I should tell someone, but my friends might not be very helpful. I guess that's why I have you guys on here, eh?? I'm still not sure wether or not I should tell my co-workers. Hmm
Only three people know....my girlfriend, who is also losing weight, my husband and a close friend. Everyone else just wonders how I've been dropping pounds lately. Very cool.
Neeners. . .I think that would almost be a more exciting option for me. . . I'd love to suprise people with weight loss. Having them notice might be sorta fun?? Maybe the ULTIMATE motivation would be people starting to notice a difference.
haha yep know exactly what you mean ice_angel07... i mean my best friend pretty much realized it on her own... I mean when your in high school things like changed eatting habbits are pretty noticable... but even after a 22lb weight loss she hasn't said anything... which goes to show why I never came right out and told her... but yeah I'm not doing it for other people I'm doing it for myself... if someone wants to know then they're free to ask or comment (as long as it's not rude lol)... if not then I'll go about my day and they can go about theres... lol but the funny thing is they won't be able to eat w/e they want for too much longer (most of them) and they're going to realize it too late but when we go back to school reunions we will have already fixed ourselves :D hehe
alwaysfree. . . I love how you said "I'm not doing this for other people, I'm doing it for myself". Sometimes I wonder if I really have my priorities in order. I guess I'm not reallly sure who I'm losing the weight for. . .so I'll fit in better with my friends??? Or so I'll FEEL BETTER ABOUT MYSELF! I guess the 2nd is waayy more important. :)
lol yeah... I mean if you're not doing it for yourself, once w/e your reason was is gone well then what happens? I mean sure looking better, guys being more interested, looking better are all great benefit ;) lol but if you don't do it for yourself then there's no use in doing it because you're not being true to yourself... and if you're not true to yourself then you're not living your life :D
I guess you're right! I think I'm gonna start putting more personal goals in mind. . . being healthier for ME, looking better for ME, and feeling better for ME. .. . sounds selfish when I put it like that. . . but It's really not. I've GOTTA do this for ME :). Thanks soo much for all the great advice! It really means alot to me.
I don't want to tell anyone. Of course hubby knows and a few other members of my family. I want to surprise my friends and the rest of the family.
Good luck with your goals... it wont always be easy that's for sure... someone once suggested making a list of why you want to... that might help so when it does get tough you can have something to look back on to help motivate you.. and there's always this site... I wish you the best of luck :D
Oh you can't help but know if you are around us when we're having a meal, a lot of talk about calories. I share with the parents of the children that I take care of and of course my mom. It's not a secret - I try to motivate others to get healthy too. There is only one childs parent that I talk more in depth to since she is more interested in losing weight herself. I truly don't know how many people even noticed how much weight I put on in the past 2 years.
Hi. I tell everyone. I know that if I keep being positive about this I am encouraged by everyone I know. I work at a bar and everyone there knows what I'm doing. They all say the same sort of things when they see me eating something. "Can you have that" or "Remember to log that in". I think it's great.

Most of my friends know because they are also trying to lose weight. So now when we go out to lunch we have support in choosing the right thing. I would say the only reason I wouldn't tell some people is I can't stand when they say something like "hey you can't have that. " Or "are you allowed to eat that I thought you were on a diet." Like they're my food police. I manage my own weight lose and what I eat is my business. Also, depending on the person, some people will eat let's say a cookie and then point out while they're eating it that you can't have it thinking they're being funny, but it's really mocking your hard work. So, you need to feel out those are supportive and those who are not. Good luck
I think it depends on your coworkers. If they are supportive and helpful people they will probably be supportive and helpful about it... if they are not so kind they may make fun of you or try to sabotage you.
I didn't tell anyone I was watching my caolries and then all of a sudden I lost weight in my hands once I had lost 20 pounds... at this point my engagement ring started falling off and I couldn't wear it anymore to work.
EVERYONE noticed this right away and were asking me what happened. I then informed them I lost a ton of weight and my hands shrunk. Then they looked at me funny and realised I was 20 pounds lighter. (and I have since lost 16 more pounds)
I don't think they even noticed untill I pointed it out. Now I get an occational comment when there are doughnuts around because people know I can't resist those :(

For me the word alone....MOTIVATION....is ENERGY AND STRENGTH!!!
I had spoken before in a post...that I had lost ME but I think my family and freinds around me ....lost ME in a big sort of way BUT not anylonger!!! :) They just didn't know it! I am a very upbeat person with very sensitive nature...not always easy to get me thru those times of severe sensitivety...but we all manage.
"Motivation" ....even the word to me is so inspiring and I just have gotta have some of that stuff and I don't want to be selfish here..... so I share with selective poeple that are around me AND truly understand where I am coming from and going into!
For me alone, I feel, it is the understanding of ones personality along with strengths and weaknesses that allow you to feel comforatble and open....so being that I am not a quiet and shy human...as some of you may already know.....It gives me a high in the most wonderful sort of way!
I am a hairdresser and I enjoy and need the wonderful relationships that is created between one human to another! It moves me. And in that, in my years in the biz....I have been lucky enough to have such loving and caring clients in my life at the beginning of our relationship as client/stylist....which has turned into a bigger than ever relationship....... and we are more than friends...we are family, we share alot of stuff between the shears and the hair....
SO if I find something good and it gets me going and I am on fire about how I feel and how I see myself. I can't keep it in.....it drives itself right out of me...like a WOW thing!
So all in all, we all are relfections of where we are from to where we are to where we want to go.......like I have said before....THANK GOD...... I GOT ON THIS TRAIN....would have missed the best ride ever!!!!!

Hi Ice,
Don't tell them. I wouldn't. Reason why I say don't tell them. You will always have some nut trying to test you. If they see you eating something that is high in calories. They will be picking with you.
I told my boy friend of 3 years that I was going on a diet. He picked with me for a long time. Every time we would go out for dinner. He will tell me not to get that. Or you can't eat here can you. Picking with me.
So, When i lost the first 21 pounds. I got more respect from him. He was like you been on all kind of diets and you fall right off. What gives this time? I told him anger and Motivation. I am not looking for your ok for my weight loss.
Learn to like it and love it. For 3 years now. I would tell him. I was going on a diet. And he will alway say. We will see. Now that he see's------ I can't get his hands off me..
I say. Let them see that you are losing. And if they ask you if you are on a diet. Just say. No. And smile and say. You really think i am losing weight. And when they say yes. Move on, with your head up high. And be proud of yourself.
Good Luck, Lynn
