telling my surgeon/doctor about my anorexia - question 2
okay so i got a lot of feedback from you guys telling me it's super important that i tell my surgeon that i had/have anorexia, as its really important for them to know and could even influence what kind of aneasthetic they can give me.
i also talked to a good friend about it, the only other person in the world besides you guys who knows about my eating disorder. she's in her 50s but is a very rational, sensible person and i trust her. problem is im not completely sure about her advice on this: she says i dont have to tell my doc/surgeon about my anorexia, that i can just tell them i was ill for a long time, lost a lot of weight, was underweight for a while, and am now working hard on trying to gain it back.
what do you guys think of this? i mean, does it make any difference HOW/WHY i lost the weight? will i be fine just telling them i had a huge weight loss that im recovering from and leave it at that without telling them it was caused by an eating disorder?
NO. You NEED to tell them about your anorexia. Weight loss is one thing but anorexia can leave damage to your organs and your heart behind as a result of malnutrition and if you're not fully healed from that it's very risky and dangerous to leave it out. Tell them.
Your friend gave you terrible advice that could end up causing your death on the operating table or afterwards. ![]()
I second what Lala and everyone else has said.
You need to tell your surgeon/anaesthesiologist end of story.
like what the hell is up with you?
LOADS OF PPL GAVE YOU AN ANSWER, and then one of your friends said one thing and you are going to go with that.
what the hell was the point in asking in the first place?
dont look for advice if you are going to ignore it
Why don't you want to tell your surgeon? What are you afraid of? If you die, then it's game over. If you tell them, then the operation might be postponed or moved up. There might be no effect whatsoever. If you don't tell them, they have no way of preparing for whatever might happen or knowing that some drugs might not be suitable for your potentially damaged organs. Would you rather live through the surgery with liver or kidney damage? Be on restricted mobility with a damaged heart? Just tell them already and get it over with.
Thanks everybody, I've definitely decided to tell my surgeon, don't worry. I guess I'm just really ashamed of my anorexia and feel like he'll look down on me, plus the eating disordered side of my brain is ashamed because I never managed to go under 100 lbs and I'm scared the surgeon will say be thinking, yeah right, you thunder-thighed big-butted person, you don't have anorexia. Even though I know my lowest bmi is clinically considered anorexic plus I'm constantly told I'm so thin and I have no curves, etc, so I have to work hard at believing what other people say instead of what I see in the mirror.
Anyway thanks for all replying, I'm going to tell my doc and my surgeon.
