Gave into temptation
I had a moment of weakness last night and went on a 15 minute binge. I felt incredibly guilty afterwards since I was doing so well. And the worst part was that I waited until my husband and son left for a softball game and snuck the food while they were gone. Help! How can I fight the urge when it comes again?
I buy the bags of Dole frozen fruit to keep around. Then when I feel like eating something sweet I get a bowl of that. You can't eat it too fast, so it controls the overeating. My friends think this is kind-of weird, but it works for me. Also, someone on another forum posted that you should brush your teeth when you feel a binge coming on. That struck me as a good piece of advice.
brushing your teeth is a good idea... I will try that. the frozen fruit is good too. I know eating a bowl of strawberries with splenda on them always satisfies my sweet tooth... I never thought to buy them frozen so I always have them. Thanks!
I loke the frozen mixed berries with a sugar free fudge pop in it(about 40 calories)...a little melted. It takes a while too, and even if you binge...it doesn't have that many calories.
One thing I realised with binges though is that there is always a reason for it. Like maybe when you are alone, you feel bored, (or relieved...lol...I know that is how I feel) or you finally have a moment to focus on you. Instead of just going to the kitchen....do something for yourself. Read a good book...take a bath...think about why you want to eat. I did this a few times after a few binges due to stress....and now since I know certain things trigger me...I try to have something lined up for me to do so I keep myself out of the kitchen.
My latest binge deterrent is the Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. Yes, not as healthy as fruit, but I feel so much like I am being "bad" but with only 140 calories I feel satisfied and so happy to have had ice cream/chocolate. Yummy!
Frozen fruit and skinny cow sandwiches are both great! I also have an air popcorn popper, which the kids love to watch. I spritz it with canola oil spray and add a dash of salt for those salty/crunch cravings. Much better than pretzels!
The absolute best deterrent, though, is to find something else to do. Cleaning house (not in the kitchen!), taking a bath, getting on Calorie Count forums and venting, playing a video game, going for a walk - any of these are great binge killers. As team_malone pointed out, key into why you feel the urge to "binge". Are you hungry, bored, upset, indulgent?
yum frozen fruit!
I usually (i know they say NO diet soda) indulge in a Stewarts Black Cherries & Cream soda. It so good! All the carbonation fills me up.
That or chew sugar free gum... the other option is (reposted) brush your teeth.
Always a problem solver here =D
First-forgive yourself and move on. Then have a plan for next time- A bubble bath when the urge hits? Painting your nails (good stalling tactic!)?
I keep frozen grapes in the freezer as a snack and like to have a food that is labor intensive to snack on-like a pomegranate. You'll find your own set of mind (and tummy) games.
Can't do anything about what's done but it's all yours from here on out.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I have gotten my crocheting out to keep my hands busy instead of using them to shovel food in my mouth! I also bought the frozen strawberries that were suggested. I really think I eat out of boredom even though I barely have time to be bored! When I have a moment to myself the first thing I think of is food. I need to put an end to that.
I'm sure this isn't going to help everyone, but as soon as I feel like I'm going to eat the whole world, I just keep saying to myself, "I'm not going to be the fat one, I'm just not".
Talking to myself really seems to help and if nothing is going to talk me down from that binge, I find that drinking A LOT of water and then brushing my teeth generally makes me feel icky enough to not want to eat.
Or, just finding something to occupy my time. And salad, if I HAVE to eat. It takes forever to eat a big salad. And you can eat one under 100 calories with light dressing. That's good too.
Hey Happiest~ You did the right thing in reaching out to the community for help. My food diary has helped me more than anything. It's my rule that I must enter it into the diary and calorie count BEFORE it goes in my mouth. Having to see those numbers on that page in black and white makes me stop and think about WHY I am wanting to go on a binge in the first luck. I hope this helps and good luck and never, ever give up. Just start anew!
