Tesco Value vs Sainsburys Basics

Quote  |  Reply

personally i don't see that much of a difference, neither taste great, neither awful, but a lot of my friends (im at uni so budget food is a big issue) are disgusted by the tesco range and only buy sainsburys;

was wondering what everyone else thought?

It's down to personal taste.  Some of the basic/value packaged goods can be OK if you're not particularly fussy.  The fresh foods can go either way. I buy JS's basic chilli peppers because they're exactly the same as the regular ones!  But the Tesco market value kiwifruit are atrocious.

Bottom line... if you pay buttons for something but end up chucking it in the bin it wasn't a bargain.  Buy the best you can afford... you'll never regret eating well.

The only thing i tend not to by from the value range at either store is meat i like to know that is of a good quality apart from that to be honest with you a lot of the stuff is the same as branded items. Tesco beans for example are made by heinz they just add more sauce i think there is a website that tells you the difference in quality between all the value ranges at tescos, sainsburys, asda etc and a lot of it is just as good as the expensive alternatives. I personally live in a place where there is only a tesco so i get a lot of their value range but when i have shopped around i cant really tell the difference myself as they are all made in the same factories they just put on different lables.

I agree with Jane. Some things on value are okay, but there are certain foods and produce you should aim not to skimp on - meat being a good example.

I have traded down to value ranges recently and have found 'dry goods' like porridge oats, bran flakes, flour as well as uht skimmed milk in cartons and low-fat yoghurt all very good from Tesco. I find Sainsbury's more expensive overall regardless of which range.
