Texting?
Why do so many people chose to write in text speak? Text me, okay! Write in a Forum, no. Text in your journal, fine! Is it the inability to spell? Laziness? This isn't cute to me. I think it's an abomination of the English language or any language for that matter. Sometimes I don't know if I'm reading something written by a 6 year old, or an incredibly illiterate adult.
You are so right! I totally agree. To me it just seems lazy and inapproriate. Is it that hard to type real words?

Just SOP for SNERTs - BWDIK?
(Sorry - but you had to know that was coming....![]()
Seriously, I can only guess it's because if someone texts a lot, it's what they're used to, and they don't know how to type something fast otherwise. Or they're lazy - the latter is more likely.
Or why some people apparently never stop laughing, given their penchant for "LOL" and "haha" after every line.
and let's not forget those who CHOOSE TO SHOUT ALL THE TIME.
Next you're going to say that LOLCATs aren't funny and LOLSpeak is annoying! ;p
Commie! ;p
I don't know. Heck, I don't even text in text speak. I tend to write in complete sentences whether it's a forum or a quick text to a friend. I don't really understand it, but I grew up with parents who were constantly correcting my grammar. It doesn't necessarily mean the person is illiterate or stupid - maybe they just don't bother trying to sound coherent.
I'm normally a big lurker but I was just going to post about the same thing! I can't stand reading text speak. It's ruining my lurking.

For some reason, "LOL" bothers me but "haha" doesn't. I think because LOL = laughing out loud, while haha implies no out-loudness. I always want to call people out. "Really? You just laughed out loud? Aren't you at work? Do your coworkers think you're weird?"
Sorry santonacci! I don't know what that means. So I don't know if I expected it or not.
God help them if they ever have to write something literate for a job application!

Just standard operating procedure for snot nosed egotistical rotten teenagers - but what do I know?
(I've seen other definitions for SNERT, but I like that one the most.)

The number of times I've almost typed that exact response to an "LOL"... Really? You really just laughed? Out loud? Really?
"Haha" in response to somebody's funny line is fine (I might have responded to emilyd's post with a haha).
"Haha" mid-sentence, in regards to something you just wrote (which wasn't funny), is annoying. On this site, I'll see this:
"So I'm prolly* not eating enough haha but is 800 cals really that bad? haha"
* I have a suspicion that people who write "prolly" don't know that is not how "probably" is spelled.

This is horrible, but I say "prolly." And "samwich." I catch myself every time and call myself out on it. It's a tough habit to break, apparently!
i h8 ppl dat use txt spk, srsly. I hate them so much that I've blocked text messaging from my phone. It takes a few extra seconds for you to type out a word whereas it takes me a few extra minutes, sometimes even hours, to figure out what the hell you're trying to say to me.
LOLspeak is different. Once in a while, it's cute. Sometimes I think peope go overboard with the LOLspeak, but there are certain situations where the meme seems to fit in a response.
Ugh, something else I also really, really detest????!!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?? Multiple punctuation all the frickin' time. Like LOLspeak, once in a while it seems to fit, but to do it constantly is like, ugh. Kill me. Srsly.

And "samwich."
My hubby and I say that - but it's because we're playing a game with our oldest son (named Sam), where we squeeze him between the two of us in a hug and shout "Samwich!" - but I digress....
And let's face it, we all have our shorthand. I've caught myself saying "I could really go for some t-ravs right now." (t-ravs: toasted raviolis)
The mother of all annoying shorthand references: 'EVOO - that's extra virgin olive oil'
We get it Rachel. You can stop explaining it every time. :)
I absolutely agree with you Kathy. I hate it when she says that time after time!
I'm with cellulitedelight. I have a 12 year old son and a 12 year old nephew. When they text me I usually have to call for further clarification. LOL! (Thought you would enjoy that one amethystgirl)!

i use lol to emphasize the tone of what im saying. when you speak people can hear your tone of voice, but i think its easier to misinterpret someone when they are typing. i like to add lol when i say something really weird or sarcastic so that people know im being silly. i actually prefer it over "haha".
but i hate when people leave out vowels, or uses numbers in their words like "h8" or "srsly". to me, it takes more effort to type like that. but "lol" just adds emphasis.
lol jessicasbc y u 1n me out lyk dat? choosin wut i typed n not wut othrs did?????? sup wit dat!?!???????????
