do your friends say anything about the way you eat? if so, what do they say?

i get alot of "do you have any food? oh wait, it's gonna be all weird and healthy" and "that's SO healthy" and "you know you want some of my fries.."

When i ask my friends to come over for dinner, they ask how much 'dirt food' i will be preparing (beets, spinach, brown rice, etc).

Usually I offer to make them something and they don't want it, even my family is like that. I am the only one here that eats healthy. But tonight I got my Hungry Girl cookbook and my dad was like "I'll try whatever you make kiddo", it was really nice like he supported me. Last night a friend came over and I got her to try a couple new things, she has started to lose weight also and she watched me cook like a hawk because she wanted to see how I do things compared to how she does. But people I am around normally don't eat what I do and if we go out to eat they make sure I am able to get something there that won't ruin my "diet". Its nice, I think since they know I am really trying and am serious about being healthy that they support it. My sister on the other hand gives me constant crap about it, "You don't eat real food anymore" which I do I just watch what I eat and don't eat horrible things. I guess it just depends on the person.

It's the people who are teetering on obese that seem to give me the worst time about my food selection.

They have slapped me with many side-comments loud enough for everyone to hear. Some of my favorites:

"We could order pizza, but Julia will probably have to order a salad". What? I still eat pizza!

"Are you sure you should be eating that cookie? It doesn't have any iron in it you know."

"Why did you pack a lunch when we're ordering in Japanese food. Oh, that's right, you think it'll make you fat like Japanese people AREN'T." (I just try to avoid sodium because it makes me puff-up like a blowfish)

And my favorite comment of all time:

"You're eating radishes for a snack? What's up Doc? D'you run out of carrots?"

I have a good sense of humor and appreciate the wit involved, but jeesh. I feel teased a lot about my food because it's healthy! I also get a lot of concerned looks from people, concerned that I'm eating healthy! Seems really backwards.

SIDE NOTE TO O.P.: ericainrecovery, I always like your posts. And my dear, you are just as cute as can be! I am sorry for your trials, but it sounds like you are on the right track. You're doing great and I hope you laugh to yourself about people's ignorant comments.

Yeah. I hate when people are like "you know you want this yummy mcdonalds, candy, hot dog etc" or "why are you eating like that you dont need to lose weight" or just weird stares when I am eating my chicken, potaotes and peas at school. lol. I did get support of one of my friends in school so we BOTH get to hear this lol. Its like "what I cant be healthy because I might be skinnier than you?" SHEESH!

When I am eating with non-family I have usually not eaten ALL DAY so that I have the calories to splurge. This leads to me eating like I have not seen food in days, which leads to comments about my "healthy appetite" yet I "don't put on weight." I just smile and shrug and move the conversation elsewhere because my eating patterns are really nobody's business.

My roommate loves Kashi products and generally really healthy foods (more so than me) and my friends joke that she only eats "bird food"

People say I am thin but no one has ever criticized my eating. In fact, if anything I eat substantially more than my friends, family etc.

All my friends do when I am around is look at my food and then just question it every 2 seconds.
the other night I was at my boyfriends and his sisters and their boyfriends were all eating nachos and cheese, and I am not a big fan of nachos and I cant eat cheese so I said no thankyou and they were like 'oh well we can grab you a bowl of lettuce with no dressing instead' (cause they know I eat salad plain). I laughed cause its my choice to eat healthy, and I guess its weird to some poeple.

There was another time I was sitting in my breakroom at work and I was eating goji berries and one of my managers, who I am close with, looked over at me and said: "what the hell are you eating?!" I just laughed and told her, I know she didnt mean it to be rude, and I think its fun to have to explain what I'm eating. Its never boring at least :) haha and at least I can enterain poeple :)

My mum said just today;

"Do you still want chocolate cake for your birthday, or do you want lettuce cake instead?"

o.O

I have to say that after reading most of these I'm thankful for having such supportive friends and family. A lot of them know I've struggled with my weight my whole life so I usually get positive feedback from them.  I think the main time I get any remarks is when i don't drink and/or when I don't eat the nachos while we're out drinking. hahaha

I started a new job recently & have been avoiding the biscuits that are out the back, so I take dried fruit with me. Today we were having a tea/coffee moment out the back & the others were eating biscuits & offered me one, to which I replied "Nah thanks, I'm prepared" Holding up my little bag of chopped up dried figs. I offered them round but..... y'know....

Nobody says anything it's more exchanged looks.

Running into this thread is too coincidental for me today.  My work treated everyone to lunch (delivery) today-Italian restaurant.  I was going to get a sub sandwich but a coworker tells me that I can "afford" to treat myself once in a while and since it's free I should get something better.  I wanted to tell her that an Italian sub is a treat for me because of the high sodium in it I hardly eat it.  Pft, instead I ordered a chicken parmigan sandwich and SHE was happy.  I on the other hand only ate half and am now saving the other half for dinner.  I'm such a doofus for changing my order...I know, I know.  Either way, either sandwich would've been good though!  Tongue out  The chicken is higher in fat, the sub higher in sodium...the sub is a little lower in cals though.

If people really knew all that stuff that goes on in my head when it comes to which foods to pick on take out menus they'd think I was nuts!! Lol

i get stuff like "what's vegan?" "why would you want to do that?" "you're not saving animals by not eating them" "don't you miss cheese??" "you may think you're healthy but really you're dying inside" and even "you're a vegan? well can you eat fish?"

AHAHA! i wish someone said that to me, i would burst out laughing like i did just then. that's gonna amuse me all day :)

Ditto. If anything, my friends and family talk about the vast amounts of food I eat. My coworkers did the same thing when I filled up two plates with fruits and vegetables at Sweet Tomatoes the other day. The most common comment was, "Wow: you must REALLY like peas." Cool I am known for being able to out-eat even my 6'+ male friends.

New people, on the other hand—people who don't know me—do sometimes say things. For example, I brought raspberries and strawberries to a party recently, and my good friend's new girlfriend said, "Oh: you're one of those health-food-only kinds of people." She's always trying to get me to eat her cheesecake and cookies now. And whenever we arrange a party, she says, "##### will bring the healthy food: check!" But she also always wants to know the secret behind the muscles in my arms and legs.... Um, you do the math.

SOunds funny, yes - but guess what? It is true. We really are dying inside - every moment, we are "dying", cells and body tissue get old and die. Life is, after all, an incurable disease... Laughing

I have been dealing with this type stuff for awhile now. You basically got peopel who are supportive and just ribbing you a little and people that are being snide bc they are haters.

Instead of explaining ur newfound commitment to healthiness (which gets old!) i have two suggestions for turning down food:

1. "I just ate."

2. "I dont like <insert name of food here>."

These two explinations are simple and hard to complain about!

I know people who would give me light ribbing but after losing 50 pounds what can somebody say? I mean tease me all you want but I lost 50 pounds! Tongue out

ugh i struggle with this constantly, friends, family, EVERYONE. Apparently it's a crime to eat healthy. My mom tries to tell me its ok to eat some unhealthy foods sometimes, actually gets mad at me when I eat whole wheat bread instead of white and freaks out that I eat too much oatmeal because it's a "diet" food.

I honestly really don't like junk food anymore, i don't like the taste and know I won't enjoy eating it but everyone looks at me like I'm nuts when I turn those things down. My friends have even told me that maybe I should try eating store bought cookies and cakes once in a while even if I don't like them and maybe I'll start liking them...why does it matter?! I'll make my own healthier versions without the processed chemicals, thank you. I'm a little worried about my birthday coming up because I know everyone will take me out for cake or bake me things. I always end up eating gross foods or ordering things I think everyone else will be satisfied with, it sucks and I always regret it :\

other people just make jokes about me being the healthy girl or everyone always wants me to pick the restaurant if we go out because I'm the one that's going to struggle to find something vegetarian (it's really not that hard!) I wish people would just stop paying attention to what I eat and mind their own business!

"you're not saving animals by not eating them" <-- I hate this one! I've gotten quite a few funny vegetarian related comments also.

My friends don't really say anything, but my mom says, "You still gotta eat."

I'm trying to get her to eat healthier and she's been like, "thanks for making me watch what I eat." when we've gone food shopping and then the next day she'll eat eggplant dipped in breadcrumbs and fried and I'd be like "What the hell?!" and she says "You still gotta eat!", so I'll say "Yeah, but you don't have to eat something so unhealthy." And she replies with, "So? I can cheat every once in a while!"

Like after one day of "dieting".

Woah, went off on a bit of a rant there.
