Thighs are KILLING me from Lunges.........anything I can do? Is it totally normal?

My stats, 24yo, 154, 5'3 Okay I've been working with my trainer for about 3 weeks now twice a week. I do an hour of cardio the days that we don't meet. Well Monday he had me doing lunges with 5lbs in each hand. I did 60 of them and of course my thighs(on the top) where killing me, it was like everytime i had to come up with my left leg there were fireworks going all the way up my muscle and by the time I was finished doing them it'd pretty much gone numb (it was really weird and I have never had that happen before). Yesterday they were bad, like I had to pull myself out of the car because I couldn't get in/out like you regularly would, etc. Well here it is, Wednesday and i'm still soooo sore! I was sore yesterday, but went to the gym and walked on the treadmill for about 30 minutes at 2.0. In the past i found that if i'm sore it really helps to "walk it out". But this wasn't the case yesterday, the tread didn't help at all. Are there any stretches, other exercise that I can do to help ease the pain? We meet again Thursday night.....so I am hoping to at least be able to walk like a normal person by then.

Thank you in advance.

This happened to me the first few times I did lunges, too.  The two things that helped me were putting a heating pad on it at night for about 30 minutes to an hour, and also not letting myself sit too long during the day.  I'd make myself get up from my desk and walk around.

Since you're working with a trainer, this probably isn't an issue, but just in case - make sure your form is correct when you're doing lunges.  You should aim for your knee of your forward leg being in a straight line with your heel.  Your knee should never go any further forward than that.  And keep your upper body straight and try not to bend forward too much (lunges are just as much of an up & down movement as a back and forth one, sometimes more.)  Once I got my form down, the soreness improved greatly. :)

Good luck!  Trust me, they do get easier, and your thighs and butt will look fabulous! :)

I've found that slow stretching (really gentle stretching) and sessions with my foam roll really helps.

Here's a picture of one: http://www.bodyyz.com/images/foamblk1.JPG

And you'd be doing something like this:

It really eases tension and tightness in the muscle. As an athlete, I don't think I could survive those recouperation days without it.

Best of luck!

Yeah, I was planning on going up there and doing/trying to walk a little more tonight. I might just stay home and rest though. It just sucks to be in pain to the point where I really can't do anything..........
