I have 2

A few years ago a dr told me that i shouldnt even bother trying to lose weight because of my thyroid condition. (NOT my dr anymore)

Another dr mentioned in one conversation " you're just one of those people who doesnt need a lot of calories. 100 years ago you'd have survived a famine. You probably have ancesstors who survived a famine"    uh gee thanks doc

Any one else left the dr's office scratching their heads?

I've lost weight several times successfully, and my doctor told me that the medication I've been taking for 8 years would make it hard for me to lose weight.  It never has, but that's always on my mind when I hit a rough spot.

I love my Doctor, she's great really, but the first time I told her I was serious about losing weight she gave me a 10 minute lecture about how unhealthy McDonald's food was. Huh? I never eat at McDonald's. Never told her I ever did want to eat there. Weird. Her assumption all overweight people must pig out there constantly, kind of  annoyed me.

not quite the same, but when i injured my knee in sports as a teanager, my ortho doc told me that if i lost 20-40 lbs my knees would be much healthier... not nessesarily healthy advice for a 15 year old female athlete who only weighed 135 at the time. My dad switched orthopedic docs for me about then.
After losing close to 90 pounds at 5'7 and 132, my doctor tells me that I should gain 5 pounds, as if she had just spent over a year trying to lose all of that!

Mine is more for my husband but it was directed at both of us.  After my second son was born my ob (whom delivered both my boys) looked up and said...now you should both lose some weight and try for a girl.  I had just had a baby so I had an excuse but my hubby was a little offended lol.

My doctor was really great all throughout my pregnancy, always told me I was doing perfect, but this nutritionist came to me and said that she only wanted me to gain 15 lbs during my whole pregnancy because I was already overweight when I got pregnant(before I got pregnant I weighed 140, not exactly a cow)! By the time she saw me again, I was 9 months pregnant and weighed 185, haha.

I have been a yo-yo dieter all my life.  Whenever I complained to a doctor that I was having a difficult time losing weight they all said "you just have to eat less and work out more".  Eventually I was eating 800 calories and working out 2 hours a day!  And still gaining weight!  I mentioned this to one of the above doctors and she said "you must be eating more than you think you are" so I created my first diet journal and brought it in to show her.  She said I was not recording everything and suggested that I see a psychiatrist about my "lying issues".

Thank God I finally found CC and am now eating 1450 calories a day, down 20 pounds since October and feeling better than I have in 10 years!

When I started birth control pills my dr told me I could expect to gain 10lbs from it.  At the time I was trying to lose weight, very discouraging.  Especially since new studies show that people don't gain from BC pills.

My doctor told me the same thing!  If I was alive 100's of years ago, I would have outlived everybody.  And that my past relatives must have survived famines.  lol.

I have also had the orthopedic doctor tell me I was borderline obese.  I am 5'3 and at the time I weighed 130 lbs.  And told me my foot wouldn't stand a chance if I didn't get ALL THAT excess weight off.

Doctor also told me that I "just need to eat less and move more".  Really?  Gosh, now I know why YOU are the doctor.

I did a "test".  6 weeks, 1300 calories a day, an hour workout everyday, 6 days a week.  I did not lose one single pound.  Not one single inch.  NOTHING.  I told my doctor that and he said "hm, maybe this is your set point weight".  Um, I am at the very least 45 pounds overweight and that is the tippy top of the weight range for my age and height.

Grrrr.

I remember when I took my son to a new pediatrician that was closer to our new home.  He said my baby was overweight and needed to loose some weight. I could accomplish this by not giving him his bottle when he always cried.  He had colic and that seemed to have settled him down. The thing is this doctor was a good 60 lbs overweight himself and I thought some nerve he has to say someone is fat with him being in that classification.

Afterall, shouldn't a health professional do as they preach and look as they preach or at least hint on their successes on their attempts at loosing weight and give out the recommendations?

My other doctor OB/GYN always recommends gastric. I told him about CC: and he said good luck. I can reasonably expect to loose 1 pound a month and he would be satisfied. Itsn't that nice.  I saw him December 31 for emergency surgery and weighed in at 295. Today I am at 275.  I know in July he will be proud and he already knows my secret.

Take care all, hope this wasn't too long.  God Bless.

I once had a doctor tell me that if I lost 20 pounds and got my boobs reduced, he'd sleep with me.

Do I win the prize?

Good grief matty_h, if he was your doctor, he was seriously out of order! If he wasn't, he is a massive jerk.

Matty, PLEASE or PLEASE tell me you are joking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you reported him!

I was reading a post in another forum and it reminded me of this one...

My husband (ex now) took me in to the doctor because he was concerned about my not eating for days (anorexia?) and then throwing up when I did finally eat something (bullimia?)

The doctor told him that I could not possibly be anorexic or bullimic because I was too fat.  Nice, huh?

Matty - is that for real?!

ok so this is slightly off topic but my mom said about herself, "I have a very plebian figure." What?

I had recently dropped from 215 to 170 and I was very proud of myself.  It had taken just under a year (about a pound a week).  I went to the doctor and the nurse weighed me.  I was so happy to see a number in the 100's on my chart again.  When my doctor came into the room and looked at my chart, and saw the difference, her response was "So it looks like the weight loss isn't going so well, if you were serious about this you could have been at 115 by now.  Have you ever considered liposuction?"  Not only is that over 2lbs a week, and 115 would have made me too skinny with my build, it pissed me off that she didn't say "hey way to go, you're headed in the right direction".  And a doctor asking a 20 year old if they have considered liposuction? are you kidding me???  Well then I went right back up to 235 and I'm working my way down again.... sigh.

I, fortunately, don't have any stories--at 20 I still go to my pediatrician and will until I graduate college and she kicks me out. :-P She's very understanding and compassionate and even when I was about 15 pounds overweight, she was very encouraging, not demeaning, and gentle. The last time I got weighed at the doctors I was 5'2 and 151, now I'm 131, so I'm not dreading going back this time!

However, my 14-year-old cousin was a bit chubby and worked hard to drop twenty pounds. She ended up gaining six back after hitting her lowest weight, but she was played field hockey and had practice every day after school, so this wasn't due to any laziness. Anyway, she went to her office and saw a doctor she normally hadn't seen and he very sternly pointed out her six pound gain and how she had to watch her weight. Her mother called in later and reamed him out, informing him that she HAD, in fact, lost weight and was a very active kid, and that his comments had been inappropriate. She made him feel so bad he sent a bouquet of flowers. XD

It's funny, but all these stories about the terrible things other people have said really motivates me - that is, it gets me really mad and makes me want to do even more, even better!  It reminds me not to be so hard on myself when I backslide - the world is going to be hard enough without my help.

And the story about the doctor who would lower himself to sleep with me (if I was skinny) was entirely true.  If I hadn't been 25 or so, and if it hadn't been the dawn of women's lib at the time, I might have reported him.  But in those days that sort of thing wasn't a reportable offense, it was just another example of "boys will be boys..."

Holy cow!  Was it an offer or an assessment?

I just wanted to say I love my doctor : ).  During my efforts to lose 20 lbs, she was always encouraging, even when I hadn't lost that much.  She said I did a fantastic job lowering my cholesterol without drugs, and she was very proud of me for it.

Even my allergy doctor is pretty nice - Last year I participated in an asthma study with about 20 other people.  The allergy docs said I had the best blood (cholesterol/BP) of just about everyone in the group.  That made me kind of sad and happy at the same time : ).
