Things to do in New York?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi!  I am going to be in New York, New York on the weekend of March 21/22.  I've never been there before.... I am overwhelmed with things to see or do in only two days!

Any suggestions from anyone who has been there before or lives there???  Restaurants, bars, sights to see?  So far I want to go to Rockefeller Plaza, central park, and The London (because I am obsessed with Gordon Ramsey and just want to take a picture outside of his restaurant ha ha).  Obviously my husband and I couldn't get into a super hot spot like Bungalow 8 but it would be fun to see a celebrity :)

thanks!

You should get some smelling salts for that coma.

I live about 45 min from NYC and from my experience the bbest thing is to just walk and enjoy the scenery. Central Park is huge I was their last yr for the Bon Jovi Benifit (sp) concert. My parents used to bring me their when I was younger and we'd walk around the village which I love all the buildings and it has some good shopping. Good luck, unfortunantly I dont know any restraunts except The Hard Rock Cafe all I know is that its near central park. You could probably go on their website and get an exact location.

Are you planning on doing the touristy stuff?  If you do there's the obvious Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, that kind of stuff.  Personally I think you should go see Wicked while you're there but I think everyone at some point should see Wicked.  It really depends on what kind of stuff you want to do because really there's SO much to do.  I'm there alot I live across the river in NJ, I go for the shows, restaurants, and I love the Natural History Museum. Let me know if you need help I can offer a little!

Hate to say it, but I found the Statue of Liberty to not be worth the trouble.  Takes a long time to get out there and through all 30 levels of security.  Eats up your day.  Do the other touristy stuff in NYC first.

I actually live here in the Big Apple, but without knowing your interests I would just be sending you on a wild goose chase!!  Please tell me a bit about the kinds of food you like, where you are staying and about how much you're looking to spend and I can suggest some restaurants/attractions.  With such limited time, closer will be easier.  I wouldn't recommend going to the Statue of Liberty because it's a full day trip, but if it's something you want to see (and who doesn't?), you can take a Circle Line boat tour around the lower part of Manhattan and get pretty close to it without having to do the whole tour of it (unless, of course, you really want to--then by all means).  The Empire State Building, Central Park and Rockafeller Center are all within 25 blocks of each other (about a mile), so you can easily hit all of them (the London is basically between the Park and Rock Center, and the MoMA is about an avenue away from the London (if you're into that).   If you tell me/us a bit more about your interests (art, history, shopping, etc.), then I can guide you along a bit better.  I will try to make suggestions for indoor and outdoor activities because the weather could be anything!

One other thing--who will you be traveling with?  Will it only be you and your husband or will others be with you?  That will make my suggestions much better/more appropriate.

So much to see and do in NYC.  Personally I LOVE the shopping and adore the street vendors!  Be sure to bargain your heart out with them.  Hit Central Park for sure, Empire was ok.... enjoyed South Street Seaport and the Brooklyn Bridge.  MoMA was fantastic but then I adore all museums.

Good restaurants....Victor's (cuban food) and also in Times Square there is a place that makes great ribs (forget the name, but it has a pig on the marquee....have a "Fall of the Porch Ice Tea" there.  Those are absolutely WICKED.

For something different....try the Museum of Sex.  Was worth admission price to see how things have changed through the years.

I've been living in the city for school for the past 6 months, and I can tell you there is so much stuff to do, it's completely mind-boggling. But if I had to tell you just one thing to do: Go to Times Square. At night. The at night part is very important. It's still amazing every time I go there. :)

I agree, the Statue of Liberty is overrated. The cruise is a good idea though, to see it without wasting the whole day. The Empire State Building, however, is completely worth it. And, personally, I really love the UN. I've been a few times, and you should go for the tour (by the by, it's a 70's nightmare in there; it's really amusing--unless they've redecorated in the last year or so). Great gift shop. Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is a nice outing, and not too long either.

As for food, I'd say you have to get a slice of NY pizza.

I'm part of an art event the 21st out in Bushwick...Bushwick is apparently now "cooler" than Williamsburg...go there! Hahaha... :)

Seriously though, what ISN'T there to do in New York? What kinds of things are you interested in? What sort of food/atmoshpere/activities are you looking for? That might give me a better idea where to direct you.

on the other hand...you can get seriously hurt here in NYC....so if you need a bodyguard...call me...lol....

Tons to do here! Go to coolinyourcode or gocity.com theres places listed there and rated

I try to get to NYC in the summer and go to Central Park as much as I can.  My uncle works at Elis deli there so I make an excuse to go visit him.

Hey I just joined the site.  How far are you from NYC?

I am on Long Island and mostly take the Long Island Rail Road into Manhattan because parking is a pain in the ***.  I don't mind driving through Manhattan, but I got ticketed last time I parked next to a broken meter.

My NY hubby took me there in Sept. - loved it!  Do the Circle Line boat trip round Manhattan - great!   Visit Coney Island and eat at Nathan's Famous hot dogs!  YUM   Go to Ground Zero.   And don't forget to have your photo taken with the Naked Cowboy!  LOL
