I admit it freely: i am in love with this stuff!! I have been eating 100% healthy (or so i thought) for almost a year now and to keep weight on i eat peanut butter. I thought, protein, some fats (i don't generally eat fatty foods) and its PEANUT BUTTER!! Then i came on here once and someone was saying that the oils in it where bad for you? Is this true? i could give it up or cut back if its actualy bad for me but i hope not!

Peanut butter is REALLY good for you. It has good fats. High in Protien. and its just all around good in Moderation. If you can handle Moderation then your fine. If you eat the Whole jar then its not good for you. =]
all-is-good, I share your love for peanut butter!  I could easily eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I eat it on bananas, apples, bread, straight - LOVE the stuff.  It is just so satisfying.

With regard to the bad oils, the skippy, jif etc. DOES have hydrogenated oils which are very bad news.  BUT don't despair, there is a brand called "Skippy Naturals" that does not have the hydrogenated oils and it isn't all "oily" the "natural" ones you find at the health store.  You don't even have to stir it.

The only problem is it is 196 calories for 2 tablespoon as is most peanut butter.  That's a LOT of calories.

The Natural skippy Peanut butter is only 180 calories or 2 tablespoons. not 196 so its actually less calories than regular peanut butter and definately lower than the other natural peanut butters Natural skippy is the only kind i will eat =]
Thanks so much!!! I don't really mind the calories but its good to know there are healthy alternatives out there. Does it cost more than normal PB?
I usually get Skippy Naturals too. Pretty darn good stuff. I have 2 servings a day.

Even if you don't buy the natural brand, it's still a pretty healthy food. If it's the only food you eat that has hydrogenated oils, you're fine. It's when all of your foods (sweets, instant rice, etc.) have the stuff. A little bit won't hurt you. :P

All Natural Peanut Butter is great stuff! I love Skippy Natural!
just stick to 100% natural peanut butter and you will be fine.  You shouldn't have anything (including peanut butter) that contains hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil in it.  This type of oil stays in your arteries and clogs them.  You should stay away from it at all costs!

Hello my name is Amy I'm a PB aholic. Tongue out

I'm trying the better'n peanut butter today. Our local  Sam's club has it for some reason right now and I'm sending the hubby to get a few big jars. I've read online the nutritional facts about it . about 100 cal. less per serving. That got my attention but, I've not had it yet. I'm Jiff, skippy fan. I like skippy natural and have some how to got the point that I'm don't care much for Peter Pan like I used to. I think they must not roast there peanuts as dark? and I can tell a difference between the peanut butter you have to stir compared to the kind that's always mixed.

I'm pretty sure there will never be a 100 cal. pack peanut butter cup! How tiny would that be? one mini cup.. lol

I prefer almond butter to peanut butter.  Soooo tasty!
Thanks for the input! It seems to me that it all depends on the person, whether they are okay with the oils or not, but even us PB fans have to admit that the hydrogenated stuff isn't good. I don't eat any junk food, none! So i don't get that much of the icky oil but i've decided that as hard as it is i'm going to cut down on PB. Every other day. And i'm gonna try the natural PB.

I eat Smart Balance peanut butter (yippee omegas),  Natural Peanut Butter (store brand on sale), and many people on this site turned me on to "Better'n Peanut Butter" I bought it at trader joe's.

They are all so good.  The "better n peanut butter" is lower in calories (only 100 cal for 2 tbsp, and 2 grams of fat) so I use that on days that I have already taken in a higher amount of calories or fat.

Yeah, it's not so bad for you it's just that it has a lot of fat in it.  And those of us who love it really love it.  So it ends up being very high calorie and high fat.  But if there's no hydrogenated oil, it's not bad.

I found a recipe for whipped peanut butter on another site.  It thins the peanut butter out so that you're getting a little less than half the amount in what seems like the same portion. It tastes a little different but I really like it.

8 tbsps peanut butter (the more natural the better)

1 tbsp dry skim milk powder

1 tbsp brown sugar

1.5 cups very cold water

Whip that all together.  It give about 2 cups of peanut butter
