Thinking of buying a machine - Running V Elipical.

Quote  |  Reply

Hi

I want to buy a running machine, or perhaps an eliptical trainer, to use at home.  Firstly has anyone got a preference for one or the other they could share with me.

Secondly, anyone got any suggestions on make/model I should be buying.  I am in the UK so please bear that in mind.  And my budget is under £400.

Cheers

Frances

I chose an elliptical because of the lower impact on the knees. It's a NordicTrac from Sears and it has push button incline and resistance. It was more than I wanted to spend but I chose to bump up my budget because the low end models were pretty bare.

I gotta tell ya' though...sometimes I like to have my legs free. In that case, I would love a treadmill but I can walk outside if the weather is right. I still love the elliptical though - no buyers remorse here.

P.S. You might be able to check Craigs List for a cheap or freebie. If you buy a new one, watch the prices and maybe they'll be on special considering New Years resolutions.

I'd say it depends on what kind of work out you're going to do - if you'll run on the treadmill, then go for that. I love mine! If you're going to walk though you might be better off going for an eliptical ... it's a toss up then.

When it comes to treadmills I found that you get what you pay for, look for one that has a motor for sure and some cushioning in the belt.

I say elliptical, because I love mine. Plus like "trendstudent" said, it's supposed to be better for your knees.

...and I don't walk on it....

I love my elliptical!  It works amazingly for losing inches on your thighs and lifting your bottom. I also see definition in my arms and shoulders from using the handles. It's weird when other people notice as well. It burns a great deal of calories! It's fun to use because you can always try to beat your time, etc.  I am in the US - California. I purchased a NordicTrack @ Costco. It was heavy and took some time to move and put together. When you first start using it you might feel a little pain around your knees but it is just muscle soreness not pressure on on knees. It goes away in 2-3 days.

I am in love with my elliptical. It's easier on my knees and my ankles, and I like that it works my arms too when I use the handles. And I get up to a pretty good pace...no walking for me.

I love the elliptical at the gym! I would recommend you buy one that has a varirty of programs. The one I use has programs that mimic a mountain hike, walk in the park etc that differ in intensity.

When I first started working out a lot, I started on the elliptical and it worked wonders for my body, but slowly the changes stopped so now I run on the treadmill every day and see a much better difference.  I still have to change up my routine week to week so my body doesn't get used to it, but it all depends on what you want which machine for.  If you would only walk on the treadmill, get an ellipitcal.

Make sure that whatever you get is comfortable for you.  I tried the ellipticals at my gym and I could never get comfortable.  Maybe it's because my legs are short, but my knees always hurt.  I have a treadmill which I got at Sears.  I have enjoyed it very much and have had it for about 7 years -- although I have had good and bad times.  (It spent 2 years in the garage not being used)
