who here thinks working out everyday is a waste of time?

Quote  |  Reply

I've been working out 6/7 days a week for the year or so. Recently my mom and friends have told me that i'm wasting my time, everyone tells me to go just 3 -4 times a week rather than 6 days. They feel like i spend too much time commited to the gym and they think i'm getting obesessive.

Anyone else here works out most days of the week? Or am i really wasting my time.

I am a trainer and I work out 3 - 4 x a wekk.  Your body needs to heal.  On the off days go for long walks so you are moving but not straining!  Good luck.
I think working out is a waste of time period. lol  just kidding I just don't think it is worth as much as the other things in my life like sleep, work, kids, and etc.

If you are enjoying it I do not see why it is a waste of time.  If it is productive, and gets the body and health you want why not?  Musicians spend more time I bet with their music. If they love music they will never consider it a waste of time.  Same with some people with their hobbies. When you see older people who are fit, one wonders if the motivation is to have as close to the health of their youth - if so you will have a motivation of the memory of fitness that will always be of value.  With so many people overweight there are few who remember effortlessly doing a hundred sit ups at top speed at 14, or running for miles(or so it seems) without being winded.

Only thing I can think is that they worry that you are neglecting aspects of life they think you should experience. Too much time spent working out when you can (to their eyes) maintain it with less work.  It coud be they are also unfamilar with how much athleats train. They may be worried you might be overdoing things and hurt your body- athleats DO get injured too.  Find out how much olympic champions and others (circus du sol preformers) work out and for how long and how many years. Make commonts on how much they pratice to show you are aware different people have different ideas of what it takes to be happy in their "work" or hobbies.  I know of people who are happier with a lot of physical exercise in their lives.  Maybe you are one and as a result are bothered that people think you are obsessive.

I work out 6 days a week, and I've gotten the same negative responses you are getting from family and friends.  But I've noticed that the people who say these things hardly work out at all.  I think as long as you are enjoying it, have a balance of other activities in your life, and aren't running into a bunch of exercise-induced issues (like more injuries, undue fatigue, compulsions), then go for it.  I work out with a trainer three days a week, and he actually encourages me to work out this much, as long as I'm getting a rest day.  I also take an extra rest day when I'm finding that it's getting too much, and for me, knowing my usual routine, I don't ever feel guilty about it.
I try to work out every day.  I don't do weights everyday but I do some sort of cardio every day.  I try for 90 minutes a day but if I can only do 30 its ok.  I also have "light days" where it might be a leisurely walk or just a little workout on the elliptical.
I agree with mlbtracy.  I find people that make these comments are jealous that they don't have the committment or motivation to work as hard as you do.  I have no kids, no husband (my bf works a ton) and no other responsibility really but to myself.  I like working out and I like how it feels.  I try to do something everyday.
I work out at the gym at least 5 days a week- and try to do non-gym cardio on the weekends- but much lighter.   It's a stress reliever, and I find it's the only time i have for myself between work and home.  As long as you are eating enough and not pushing yourself over the top-  I say go for it.  If I don't go before work, my day feels incomplete.  It's just another part of your life.  I get the same comments too-  but from people who don't go and have no sense of the word "healthy".
I have heard that if you exercise long enough - you peak - not sure what the cutt off is...I think it's over an hour or so...so you don't do any harm, you just don't benefit past a certain point.

I shoot for working out everyday just so that I know for sure I will get in at least 5 workouts!  If I do the Mon-Wed-Fri thing...and life gets in the way...then I never seem to replace the workout.

I believe life is about balance so if you balance your exercise with  your eating and leisure, rest and work time...you should reap the benefits and rewards!!

Everyday: Cardio, Weights & Low Cal Diet

It's the only way that I've been able to drop those last hard_to_lose Lbs.

Will I still be doing the weights everyday after I lose my last 10lbs? Prob not but you better believe that I'll be doing it at least 4 days a week.

Rock On!

thanks for all the responses! I was starting to get worried that I was spending too much time at the gym, but now i see i'm not the only one! I love working out but sometimes the "wasting ut time/day/hours" comments really make me think twice about going, sometimes i feel guilty for going.
jeez..

i LOVE to workout..love love love..

i get moody if I miss a workout. I probably overtrain but..its addicting and its better than doing drugs..now isnt it.

Well, you didn't say how long you spend at the gym, just that you go 6 or 7 days per week. Maybe you spend 3 hours a week at the gym, maybe 40 hours a week there -- no way to guess from here.

Work, education, play, love, ... are also important parts of living. So I'd say you're spending "too much" time at the gym if, and only if, the time you spend there takes away from other aspects of a full life. If that's so, your mother and friends have a point: what do they suggest you "should be" doing instead? If they don't have positive alternative suggestions, it's just jealousy Wink.

FWIW, I work out 6 days each week, but rarely longer than an hour per day. A few people have told me that's excessive, but so far nobody whose opinion on the topic I take seriously (no loved ones, good friends, or people in better shape than I am ).

I agree with tgpish. As long as you are sure you're not neglecting other important aspects of your life (family, friends, work, relaxation, sleep, etc.) to work out, you're fine. And if your mother and friends don't have positive alternative suggestions for "what you should be doing" instead of spending time at the Gym, then they are just jealous. Just make sure you're listening to your body, and resting when your body needs it, especially if you're ill or injured.

To your health! :)
