Thinner thighs with little or no exercise? is it even possible?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm 16, 5"3, 126lbs.

Does anyone know of a way to trim down thighs without losing much weight elsewhere? REALLY don't want to lose the boobs and I don't feel I need to lose the weight exactly, my thighs seem not in proportion with the rest of me and would only really like to tone/strengthen them.

I've got pretty bad arthritis in my knees, shoulders and sternum which likes to have its moments and I so can't exactly do exercise 3 or 4 times a week and absolutely can't do lunges or anything that puts pressure on my knees at all.

Does anyone know of a way of exercising to both tone and strengthen the muscles of my thighs/knees without aggravating my knee joints? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Maybe try laying abductions (good instructions on sparkpeople.com) or those inverse sit-ups where you lay on your back, put a phsyio ball between your feet, then raise and lower your legs while straight?  Works your lower abs but also inner thighs from the squeezing motion.

Have you tried yoga?  While it's good at stretching and relaxing your body, it's also a fantastic way to tone (but is low-impact).

No I haven't actually, does it require a lot of kneeling?

It all depends on what poses you do.  But most don't require kneeling; also, you should work on a yoga mat (you can buy a decent one cheaply) so it wouldn't be quite as jarring on your knees.  I would do a search on google for starting yoga positions.  Look for ones that target certain areas and sites that provide clear pictures.  Yoga--even hard poses--never feels that difficult to me, but when I'm done with a workout I always feel refreshed and energized.  And it always amazes me how my muscles respond (positively) when I do yoga regularly.

Maybe also consider signing up for a community yoga class this summer.  The price should be cheaper, you'll have an instructor who knows what they're doing and you can let him/her know about your knee concerns.

Good luck!

Thank youu (: I'll go google it right now :D

There is no exercise that will cause you to lose weight in any particular place. period.

^ She is not saying she wants to lose weight!!!  To the OP...You stated you don't want to lose weight...so here are some great exercises you can do at home to help give you those killer hot legs and these should be easy on your knees!

Outer Thigh Lift - Lie on your right side with right arm extended out straight, head resting on arm. Place your left arm in front of your chest for support. Keep your hips aligned, bending your right leg for a wide base of support. Lift left leg up and out from hip socket. Lift out for 2 counts and lower for 4 counts, resisting as you lower your leg to starting position. Repeat 12-15 times. Repeat on the other side/ 3 sets.

Hamstring Curls - . Lay on your stomach, and keep your legs and feet together. If you have some then wear an ankle weight on each leg -approx 3 to 5 pounds each. Start by having your legs and feet on the ground, and then bend your legs at the knees and bring them to your buttocks as close as possible. Hold for 10 seconds, and then bring them back down BUT do not let your feet or legs touch the ground. Repeat 10 times for each set, doing three sets continuously every day.

Squats are so good for your legs. If they are too hard on your knees, try using a stability ball. Sit on it, feet out in front. If you have free weights handy, hold a 25 lb weight with your hands up next to your chest. Slightly raise yourself up off the ball, very slight and VERY slow then VEEERRY slow back down, sticking butt out, just lightly touching the ball with butt before you raise back up. 3 sets of 15

She wants her thighs to be smaller without losing weight elsewhere.

I'll rephrase my previous point. "There is no exercise that will shrink any particular body part. Period."

Um, no, read above. That is not what she asked. Again,  to diice, stick with the exercises I mentioned in previous post.

Wait, I could have sworn that 'how to get thighs smaller without losing weight elsewhere' was exactly what she asked.

So, the OP wants her thighs to get smaller or she wants to 'tone' them.  I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that by 'tone' she means 'make smaller' (because muscles can only get bigger or smaller and from reading the first post I think it's safe to say that she doesn't want her thighs to get bigger).

So again, there is no exercise that will cause you to lose weight in, or 'trim-down' any particular body part.

The crap Jane Fonda was pushing in the 80's didn't work then, and it still doesn't work.

Thank you fitnessgirll!

I'll definitely give them a go (:

You're mighty welcome, Diice! [I knew exactly what you meant! ;) ]

Umm what I got from the post was also that she would like to make her thighs smaller while not making any other place smaller. Her question indicating that she wants to "trim down thighs without losing much weight elsewhere" seems to rather strongly imply that... and the title does say "thinner thighs."

She said she wants thinner thighs without exercising. Maybe you missed the title?

Your best bet is to lay in bed 24 hours a day and not use your legs at all. They will waste away to little twigs in about 6 weeks.

She didn't?

Is there a way to make something 'thinner' but not smaller? or to 'trim down' without making smaller?

This sounds like something I could stick with. In conjunction with my beer-only diet of course. I wonder if my boyfriend will be amenable to supplying me with beer while I rest up?

Nope, didn't miss title. Didn't skip reading her whole post, either...where she elaborated on what she really wanted. Which was...to quote...

Pretty obvious what she she really wanted.

You're right... it was pretty obvious... how silly of me... obviously when the OP said she wanted thinner/trimmed down thighs and exercises to 'tone and strengthen' it's really obvious that by 'tone and strengthen' she really meant 'disreguard what i just said about thinner/trimmed down and tell me how to keep them the same size'.

Man do I feel dumb for missing that... I should probably work on my reading comprehension...

No worries..glad I could clear it up for you. And, actually help her.

It's just weird, fitnessgirll, because on another thread you prided yourself on referring (in your words, "basically quoting") to what the poster asked for, and yet when sully did the same thing, and quotes not only the title of the thread, but the first line of the original post, you slam him for not interpreting what the poster meant correctly.

I'm getting a little frustrated by your insistence that you are the only one who understands what posters want or need.

If someone wants to "trim down thighs without losing much weight elsewhere," it is simple to conclude that she does in fact want to lose weight in the aforementioned area. Which, as sully first responded, is not possible to do (at least not on purpose).  I don't see how you can say that this is not what the original post said.
