Thoughts on Hamburger Helper?

Quote  |  Reply
So my darling fiance wanted to surprise me with dinner after I woke up from my nap but I ended up crawling off the sofa early and killed the surprise aspect.  He's making Hamburger Helper.

I read the information, and he's trying to be respectful to my new eating thingy, so I'm going to assume he didn't pick out something terrible.  But still, I need outside opinions.

The food log majigger gives it a B overall, and one serving is about my remaining calories for the day, but I've never heard any miracle stories about Hamburger Helper, though I haven't heard any horror stories either.

Any opinions on it?

I think it's fine having hamburger helper as long as it stays in the amount of calories per day. And hey, it got a b. not too bad.
My thoughts on Hamburger Helper? It should be illegal. I don't know HOW it got a B.
My kids, who are 16 and 17 have started making dinner and this is one thing they are comfortable making, so there are times that I have to eat it so that I don't squash their growing culinary skills. LOL  When they do make it, I will serve myself a small amount of the Hamburger Helper and a very large portion of vegetables and if we have a salad I will eat more of the salad as well.

They know I am trying to watch what I eat, so they don't usually say too much if I just have a very small portion.

It's garbage.

The only redeeming value is the chop meat you throw in it.

However, it's definitely better than going to McDonald's.

It's usually high in sodium, so make sure you hydrate.  I also like the idea of eating a smallish portion of the hamburger helper and having some veggies.  Perhaps you can offer to help with the dinner prep by making a nice side salad to go with?
X_____O;  Horrible as in the taste or as in it's nutritional value?

And as for the chopped meat you throw in, I didn't really plan on eating that part..

Nutritional value.

It's nothing but refined carbohydrates with a bunch of extra chemicals thrown in for absolutely no reason. You could make it from scratch yourself and it would be much healthier.

I guess this is one of those cases where the box is healthier than the content.

Maaaaaybe I'll just skip dinner tonight and have a glass of milk..
Here's my .02...

People are more important than diets, though diets are important too.

I would walk in, make a surprised face, and say, "Oh, you are soooo sweet!  Thanks honey!  I was so tired I didn't feel like cooking.  It's sure not on my diet, but I am so happy to eat this dinner with you because I can tell you made it for me with your whole heart.  You ARE the BEST!!!"

You let him know it isn't on your diet, but he still gets all the credit for his kind gesture.  Hopefully, when he wants to surprise you again sometime, he'll think loving thoughts of you AND about your diet.  LOL ;)
I agree with Tiffani.  One meal isn't going to totally wreck you especially if you do like Shelly suggested and only have a small portion of the hh and more of the veggies and/or a side salad.  If we don't praise people when they do something helpful (even if it's not ideal) they aren't likely to do it again.  The relationship is more important.

  Well said Tiff!

Kindness contains no calories at all and is the easiest way to seeten any day!

I'd never eat it but I'd thank him sweetly and since he's into doing a little cooking, guide him along to other easy to prepare, tasty dishes.  Do you have a grill.  Seems lots of men, like to grill.  Or suggest other easy things the two of you can do together, that he might pick up on and do on his own.

sorry, none come to mind right now except a spaghetti dinner, Ok, not a diet dinner, but healthy with wholewheat pasta.  there are lots more things he could fix.  Even lean hamburgers, with roasted potatoes, or what about just chicken breast fillets? They are super easy and healthy, then with a veggie, etc.

EDIT:  I mean............I'd never buy it.  Of course, I'd eat it if he fixed it.      :0)

You obviously have a fiancee who can't cook.  Ah well, it's not the end of the world.  Hamburger helper isn't horrible, but it isn't good.  When I make it I usually add some frozen veggies to bring up the vitamin content.

Still, he's making it for you as a kindness, so you'll do more damage by refusing to eat it than you will by having one "bad" meal (unless you have high blood pressure, cause that stuff is loaded with salt).

Suggestion: Next time you make supper, have him help by making the salad.   Then the next time he wants to surprise you, he'll know how to make one thing that you like.

Lawl, my fiance is an amasing cook.  He just only knows how to cook Japanese food, Mexican food, or Italian.

We leave the Polish/American/Ramen meals to me.

Thanks everyone. <
