Are three diet sodas a day too many?
Asked by mepacey on Sep 14, 2009 in Weight Loss

How many diet sodas is okay for one day?  Should artificial sweeteners like aspartame and Splenda be limited?

Answer

Three cans of diet soda per day are within the Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) levels for low-calorie sweeteners.  According to the FDA, if your 12-oz cans of diet soda are sweetened solely with aspartame (NutraSweet), you can safely drink 15 cans a day, and if your 12-oz cans are sweetened solely with sucralose (Splenda), you can safely drink 5 cans a day.  The FDA maintains that both aspartame and sucralose have been rigorously evaluated and found to be safe.  Just make sure that diet soda does not take the place of more nutritious beverages, like milk, or water.
