Could this be my thyroid....

Quote  |  Reply

I'm on levoxyl for my hypothyroid.  My levels were fine when checked about 5 months ago, although I am always exhausted (I have 3 little children so I'm not sure what is normal for tired anymore!) Here are some symptoms I've had the past few weeks...heart palpitations and hand tremors.  One night when trying to sleep my heart was racing and it felt like I couldn't catch my breath.  Then yesterday while relaxing on the couch, out of nowhere, it felt like my heart was going to pound out of my chest.  Yesterday afternoon (later in the day) my hand just started shaking.  Am I being a hypochondriac????  Just curious as to what others with thyroid issues think....

I'd go to the doctor right away if I were having symptoms like that, regardless of my history. Google hand tremors and heart palpitations and you find scary things like congestive heart failure, thyroid issues, parkinson's, or reactions to medication. Thyroid issues with these symptoms show up in a lot of google results.

Even so, I'd get into ER or at least into the doctor first thing Monday morning to rule out the most serious issues.

Are you still underweight? What is your eating like right now?

Either way, don't try and guess what did it. Go to your doctor.

My eating is quite well - I'm 105 at 5'4 (still trying to get myself to gain those last 10pds. but I'm certainly not dangerously underweight).  I'm eating regularly 3 meals plus 2 generous snacks every day.  I think I will be calling the dr. first thing tomorrow.  I have a hard time getting myself to the dr. as it is, funny how I'll rush my kids to the dr. for everything, but I put things off when it comes to me.  Thanks for kicking me in the rear on this one though.

I just replied to your other post but I'll say it here too: I know people who've had heart attacks at your BMI range. You are still dangerously underweight.

honestly it sounds like your thyriod has gone from hypo to hyper.
hopefully you will just need to have your thyriod med adjusted - get in to see your doctor.

best of luck.

I def think sfredbull is right, I have hypothyroidism and they upped my meds too far once and that is how my body reacted.  Def call your doc and get your levels checked again.

I have hypothyroidism so am very familiar with its typical symptoms.  I suggest that you ask your doctor to test you asap for a B-12 Deficiency (pernicious anemia).  Your current symptoms are reminiscent of what I have been enduring for the past year despite my thyroid levels maintaining in the "normal" range.  My doctor decided to test me for B-12 deficiency and she was right on the money.    I am B-12 deficient and am now receiving B-12 shots once weekly.  I've had only 2 shots so far and already can detect improvement.  It is an easy test - just a blood sample.  Since you are hypothyroid, ask for the B-12 test when you get your next blood tests done for TSH and T4.

I third this.  I think the thyroid medication dosage may be too high, causing your thyroid to be hyper.  Please visit a doctor as soon as you can if you're experiencing symptoms as bad as those.

Yes, this could definetely be that your are getting too much thyroid.  It could also be a few other things, including anxiety.  Low calcium or magnesium can also cause these sorts of things.  There are probably other causes that I cannot think of at the moment as well.

As others have said, you should get to your doctor.  If it is much thyroid, that can damage your heart.  If it's low electrolytes that too can damage your heart.  Go get it checked out!  And it wouldn't hurt you to have a glass of milk on the way out.
