Has anyone had issues with weight loss, and/or miscarriage and thyroid issues? I've been struggling for 10 months to lose weight, also during this time I had two miscarriages. I am suspecting a link to hypothyroidism and have put a call into the doc to see if she has ever tested me.

Anyone?

I've not been tested, but looks like I will be shortly.

Anyone have any experience through self or family or friends?
I've known a couple people to take synthroid, which is a thyroid supplement. I know to get checked it's a really simple blood test they do. Low T3 hormone had been linked to miscarriages. It increases the possibility by like 3 or 4 times more. You really probably need to get checked out

You can nourish the thyroid by taking seaweed. You would need to find out how much to take and I know you have to build up when taking seaweed tabs and not just start taking large doses. Seaweed is rich in iodine, and iodine nourishes the thyroid.  Also chlorinated water is horrible on the thyroid. Stay out of the pool if you swim alot and you can get shower filters for the home to filter the chlorine out of your water. Chlorine destroys the thyroid.
Thanks antonio. I have been reading up today and saw the bit about seaweed. I am going to get the blood work done as soon as the docs office calls back with an appointment.

Hello m3lody,

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  Looking back I can see this may have been a problem for a while, but I had never put the many symptoms together to realize what was going on.  I had been steadily gaining weight over the years, even though I was only eating around 1500-1800 calories a day!  I had also had a miscarriage quite a few years back that may (or may not) have been related.  Over the last 2 years I have become severely intolerant to cold and plagued with chronic constipation.  Finally my gyn checked by TSH and found it was elevated.  It wasn't sky high, but enought to signal an abnormality.  I started synthroid (or rather the generic equivelant) about 3 months ago and I feel 1,000 % better!!  No more morning puffy face!  No more feet and hands so cold they hurt!  No more feeling sleepy and groggy all day!  And the constipation is much improved, but not all together gone.  If you suspect tyroid... I would RUN to your doctor and get checked!  I sure wish I had mine checked years ago!

Good Luck!
i have hypothryoidism.  e-mail me if you have any questions.

i was just diagnosed with it in may, but i think i've had it for a few years now.  (in fact I have to go get re-tested this week...yuck!).  anyway, i just take synthroid every day and have been going down for a few weeks now.  don't know about the pregnancy question, i'm still single and a virgin.

unlike some of the others, i never felt bad.  it was accidently discovered due to a possible link to PCOS (have to get re-tested for that this week too).  But after being on synthroid (generic) for a few months, I have noticed that I don't get cold very often anymore!

anyway, if you think you've got it, go find out asap.
My Docs office is awsome. I dont have insurance and she knows that. However, she was willing to listen to my symptoms and I am going for  bloodwork in the morning. She also wants to check sugar, and I'm ok with that. Grandmother and mother both suffer(ed) from diabities. Although, I doubt the sugar cuz I eat really balanced.

Thanks for your input. I've been here for 10 months doing what I am suppose to be doing, I should have reached goal by now but have only bounced up and down between 5 lbs.
I too am going to have my thyroid tested tomorrow. I have had the hardest time losing weight and want to rule this out. I didn't know that being cold was a symptom of thyroid problems. Can you tell me more about that?
I have hypothyroidism, it is the pits! I am taking Synthroid as well. I started off with Armour but that didn't work for me. I can take years to find the correct dose, so don't give up! My doctor changes mine almost everytime I go in to see him. I would suggest seeing an endocronologist to have your blood tested.

Also some of the symptoms are:

  • difficulty losing weight
  • rapid weight gain (I gained 30 lbs last year)
  • depression
  • memory loss
  • hair loss (half of mine fell out, lucky I had lots!)
  • fatique/exhaustion
  • foggy feeling
  • intolerance to cold/always cold
well first I need to get the bloodwork done.....lol

But your right, endocronologist are reccommended.

As for the cold the research says one sign is feeling colder then the everage person. Also related to low body temprature which mine has run around 97.8, about one degree.
Mine is naturally around 97.4 and has been for years. My grandmother had her thyroid removed, I don't know why, but it's apparent she had thyroid problems.
speaden I wish you the best on your test tomorrow. Here's to hoping we get negative results, although... I would like an answer to this resistance to weight loss.
Jeunene what a beautiful family you have... and um, I hope thats not what the town you live in looks like right now. Neautiful, but chilling!
m3lody, I too am experiencing problems with lack of weight loss, which made me make the appt to get my thyroid checked out too. I hope it's not thyroid problems, but it would be an easy answer to the resistance.
I wanted an answer from my doctor today too, when everything medical came out fine..The only thing he could suggest was that the BMI sometimes takes a few weeks to start to move. He just said to hang in there with what I am doing since nothing medical is hampering it. I kinda hoped it was something I could at least blame, but a clean medical slate is a good thing....BTY, another symptom of hypothyroidism is hair loss, my daughter has it, after a miscarriage, and then the birth of her baby. She didnt lose hair in clumps or anything, but "shedded" alot more than usual
Yup, I'm hypo

I went to the docs for more pills and to see about my last blood test. Should I needed a higher dose? (I think so)...well.... he can NOT find my blood work results!!

So I'm still on 0.15mg of Levothyroxine a day.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I hope the doc can tell to what's going on.
Here is a site with info on hypothyroidism:  here

I had actually thought I had it - got tested twice, both came back negative, however I found out later that you are suppose to fast for 24 hrs before having the test, and I didn't do it (didn't know you were suppose to), so I am thinking the test results were incorrect due to that fact.  I have all the symptoms of it, including difficult to lose weight.  My current doctor won't test me - truly believes that my weight problem is ALL because I have no control - so am trying to get another doctor to take me over as a patient, and then request that I have the blood test done again.  I have been trying an OTC medication called Thyrin-ATC, which is a thyroid-support med, and it has been helping a lot, which only supports my belief that I do have a sluggish (or non-existant) thyroid.

Good luck to all.
So how does one convince a doc to actually check their thyroid? I have about 90% of the symptoms listed on that page, some have only recently started, others I have had for years... Just wondering if there was some secret to getting your doc to believe in you instead of always expecting you to believe in them.
M3lody, Thank you so much: ) They are quite cute, I'm sure if you asked them they'd tell you! LOL! Really, I have some of the most wonderful children in the world! I actually have a view of that Mt. (Mt. Rainier) from my home in Puyallup, so we are just wet all of the time! That was taken by my daughter from her camera phone on a visit to the Mt. last winter.

Oh LOL- Thanks for pointing that out~yes please do get diagnosed by your Dr with a blood test before taking medications!

Willowraven: I actually went to an endocronologist before I found the Dr. I have now, that actually told me there was nothing wrong with me... Without even taking a blood test! She felt my thyroid gland and told me I was fine and to do the South Beach Diet. What a Weotch! So if you feel there is something wrong with YOUR body, get a different Dr. and be persistant. if I hadn't I would still be miserable to this day. I believe the normal range has changed lately as well from 0.5-5.0 to now 0.3-3.0
One of my best friends was recently diagnosed as hypothroid and is on Synthroid.  She is now starting to lose some weight that she gained.  She was tested 2 Times by the first  Dr who said her levels were fine.  and she new something was wrong.  She was finally got diagnosed after going to an specialist/endo.  It definitely pays to be persistant.  I do hope your results are negative Melody.

Hi mywildchild,

You really shouldn't have to convince your doc to check out ANY health concerns you may have.  Especially if it involves just a simple blood test.  If he poo-poos you... get a new doc.  He works for you!
