Could it be my thyroid or other medical issue?

I have been trying to lose weight for a while no, but the past couple of months have really dedicated myself to it. I eat about 1250 calories a day ( no more than 1300 ever) and I go to the gym everyday. I do about 30 min of cardio in intervals and do weight lifting that I vary up every so often. But somehow I do not seem to be losing a pound. I don't think it's just a matter of plateu because I change things up quite often.

Could there be a medical reason? My grandma has thyroid problems and I seem to have a lot of the same syptoms. Anyone have any suggestions? I am going to go see my doctur to ask about it soon.

Yeah I was wondering that too. I will try upping the calories and see how that goes for a while. I think I will still ask my doctor though.

You definitely need more calories; up it to at least 1500 - what are your stats?

i am 5'2 and about 158 depending on the day maybe 160.  See even when I was eating 1500 I was having a hard time. But I will up it to 1450 for the next couple weeks and see what happens.

Oh, and that tool  posted above told me to eat about 1381 per day. My body fat is 31.6%. The first time I entered it without body fat and it was at 1400 or so.

I have a confirmed Thyroid issue, though its fairly mild.  But getting thyroid medication was not a magic bullet for weight loss.  Here is my experience.

Before thyroid medication, I went on a diet eating about 1500 calories a day.  I *did* lose about 15 pounds but I was terrilby hungry for the first 2 weeks.  It was sheer willpower that got me through.

When I started taking thyroid medication, my energy level was better, especially in the afternoon.  I didn't find I had to have a quick pick-me-up snack in the afternoon just to stay awake until the end of the work day.  But I didn't lose any weight either.

I started dieting again 7 days ago and have lost 7 pounds so far (I'm sure much of it water weight).  But the best part is I'm not hungry all the time and I don't have a lack of energy.

If you think you have a thyroid problem, I'd suggest reading up on it then going to see your doctor.   There are some excellent articles on http://thyroid.about.com/

However, I advise you to be careful about how you approach your doctor.  I did tons of research and basically self-diagnosed.  Then I went to the doctor and said "I think I have a thyroid problem" and she immediatly got all defensive and thought I just wanted thyroid medsfor weight loss.   She rans some tests, and my lab results were borderline.  So in spite of having all the symptoms of an underactive thyroid, she refused to treat it.   It took me 6 months, 3-4 sets of lab tests and pleading with a specialist before I finally got them to let me try using synthroid to see if it helped.  So my advice, just describe your symptoms and let the doctor draw his/her own conclusion so they wont think you are an internet induced hypochondriac.

By the way, here is how I knew I had a thyroid problem.  Once in a while my husband decides to make pancakes for breakfast as a special treat.  One Saturday morning we had pancakes with syrup, and later went shopping at Lowes.  While we were shopping, my energy level dropped, and my brain basically shut down.   I had a hard time concentrating enough to even remember what we were shopping for.  I just couldn't think, plus my legs felt weak.  I told him I thought I needed to eat, even though I had just had tons of calories in the form of pancakes and syrup a couple hours before.  We went and got some burgers and fries and within 15 minutes I was fine.  Naturally my husband got all upset and insisted I go see a doctor.  Turns out I had hypoglycemia (aka low blood sugar) as a result of the blood sugar spike from all the carbs for breakfast.  Hypoglycemia can be caused by underactive thyroid.

Your experience has helped me a lot. I don't think I have a thyroid problem just because I can't loose weight. I also can't seem to stay awake a lot even though I get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. I am also always hungry, even just after I eat. I also have been getting a lot of major headahces lately that leave it really hard to concentrate on anything. I also have a lot of digestive issues. Plus, my grandmother has throid problems. I have almost every medical issue she has ever had. We are a lot alike so thats why it wouldn't suprise me either.

If you are worried about your thyroid, I would speak to your doctor sooner rather than later.  Untreated, low thyroid levels can lead to serious health problems.

I'm sure you've looked up low thyroid symptoms already, but they can include fatigue, constipation, difficulty concentrating, dry skin, thinning hair, irregular or longer periods, cold intolerance, etc.

I agree with previous posters - talk to your doctor about your symptoms, but I would also tell her about your concern re: thyroid problems given your family history. It's easy to check - just a simple blood test.
